Sony External Hard Drive help!?

Q. Today, I bought brand new metal rose pink 1TB Sony External Hard Drive (HD-E1), I connected it to USB drive to add some files, but when my AVG Internet Security 2012 and Microsoft Security Essentials 2012 scanned it automatically, both program showed that there is dangerous threats and "Password Protection Managere Setup" program (that's inside the drive) is infected by unknown virus Win32/DH{DAMANQ}.

I was shocked and quickly searched through the internet about this issue and looked for solution, but never found about infected brand new hard drive. on the back of the drive, there are Korean and Chinese Characters (Kanji) and it is also written "Made in Philippines", I never heard of fake Hard Drive, is it not Genuine?? or defected item?

PLEASE HELP!!!
I know that PC processor cannot handle two antivirus, installing two antivirus in in one system crashes the PC&laptops.

"Microsoft Security Essentials 2012" is one of the small program that included with "Windows Update", is it like "Windows Firewall" that comes installed in all the brand new PCs&laptops.

Answer
most likely it's a false positive, meaning you antivirus's heuristic algorithms find the program suspicious so it's flagging it as a virus when infact it may be safe. I wouldnt worry about it, just add to your antivirus except list.

or

if you are paranoid like me, create a new partition table, create a new partition, format the partition (non-quick). All data on the drive will be erased, including this flagged software.

Step 1:
Download Parted Magic (a portable linux Operating System), burn the iso file to a blank cd or dvd
Step 2:
Boot Parted Magic and open Gparted (Your computer must be set to boot from DVD/CD drive)
Step 3:
Select your external drive (assuming it shows up, parted magic may not support your drive)
Step 4:
Create new partition table (MSdos, selected by default), Create new primary Partition (NTFS)
Step 5:
Boot into your normal Operating sytem (window i'm assuming)
Step 6:
Go to "Computer" or in xp "My Computer" and right click on your external drive, choose format
use NTSF and disable the quick-format check box. This will take a long time.

Your drive has a new parition table, and has had all paritions (including hidden) erased and a new partition made, plus all old data wiped to prevent recovery using third party tools.

That's why i find the parts for him. But he owes me, and he will repay, by letting me playing whenever i want on his pc!

Yes I've checked and all of them parts are compatible but in the unlikely case that I'm wrong just go to you're nearest computer store and ask the staff.
Hope I've helped.

Can I use a portable hard drive?

portiarayl

The hard drive in my computer doesn't work, so I have to buy another. Can I just buy an external one or do I need an internal one?

Answer
Since your internal drive is connected using a SATA connection and an external is connected via USB an internal hard drive works faster so it's recommended that you get an internal hard drive to install your operating system and other applications on. External drives are usually for file storage. Also your BIOS will most probably have a problem booting from your external drive as it looks for an internal drive to boot your operating system from and it's your operating system that allows you to connect your external hard drive using the USB drivers.

So no, it's very unlikely that you'll be able to get by with an external HD alone.

What is the best portable 1TB hard drive?

Q. I need a 1TB hard drive just to back up my files (mainly movies and TV shows). I was looking into the Clickfree C6 portable hard drive but the reviews weren't great. Which hard drive have you used in the past or recently that you think is the best? Thanks!

Answer
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0045JLPMO/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=acomprar-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0045JLPMO

Honestly to make this easy, here are some steps you can follow, since I believe this to be the better of the 3 mainstream external 2.5" drives (Toshiba, Western Digital, and Seagate).

1. Why bother with the software in the first place?? just reformat the drive, or delete the software. Sure it is a bit annoying having 40 gigabytes taking up space right out the box, but is that really the only main source of concerns for this drive?

2. Now for the USB cord. out of the multitude of variations of 1tb usb 3.0 drives I have run and tested, every manufactuer has just about the same length of cord. If you want a longer cord, and or are wondering how you are going to power this drive other than with the supplied USB, then why are you buying this particular external HDD? this model is not for you if you are NOT an on the go type of person. what I mean by that is, if you do not lug your external drive around, why dont you go buy a powered 3.5" external HDD model for the same price as you would this one and have twice the space?

3. As far as the construction of the drive goes it is solid. I have tested the Toshiba 1TB 3.0 as well as the Western Digital 1TB 3.0, and my opinion is that Toshiba and Western Digital were too concerned about how slim and compact they could make the case of their external HDD, which has resulted in may more failures of those particular brands than I have seen from Seagate. Small shocks, such as light drops and accedental shock is a killer for the Western Digital as well as the Toshiba more than the Seagate models I have seen. Yes I know that there are about 3 or more warning labels stating the these drives should never be hit, moved, droped, abused, etc... but If it WERE to happen I have noticed that the Seagate construction has had a better chance from failing due to these certain cercumstances than the other brands I have tested and seen.

4. If there is any con's about this drive I will say that I am not a fan of the two piece adapter. they should have included their USB 3.0 "Upgrade" cable with this drive and not the two piece unit that is currently supplied with it, as the upgrade cable is also a few inches longer and one solid piece. The two pieces I am referring to are the adapter that plugs into the drive itself and the USB 3.0 cable that goes from that adapter to your USB device.

5. Im not here to bag on any one company, and or promote Seagate as the best of the best when it somes to drives in general. I am just stating overall that if you are looking for a 1TB 3.0 USB 2.5" drive, then this is what you are looking for. I just thought I would post this up as I keep seeing negative reviews on this drive just because of a bloatware issue not a material type defect. hope this helps! If not im sorry for wasting you time.

Question about SSD Drives?

Q. I was thinking of getting an SSD to upgrade from my USB Flash Drive. I want to use it to basically put movies, projects, and personal files on there. I want to be able to carry it around, sort of like a portable USB flash drive.

However, when I checked up on NewEgg to look at the pricing, I came across two categories. External SSD and Internal SSD. There were a lot of products/ratings for internal SSDs, however not barely any for external SSD.

What is the big difference between external and internal SSD. Initially, I thought internal was for putting into the computer, while external would be the thing im looking for. Can internal SSD be used in the way im looking for as well? I'm rather curious why there are such a limited number of external SSD and seemingly not many buyers.

Answer
Your right. Internal hard drives typically use SATA connections (you've probably never seen one) and external hard drives use USB. External SSDs are uncommon because its sort of a weird spot in the market. Usually, people either use a flash drive with flash memory or a regular external hard drive. I check Neweggs daily deals every day and today they have a shockproof and waterproof external hard drive for a pretty good price. I assume you know the difference between a standard hard drive and a solid state hard drive, and the only advantage to SSDs are that they can be smashed and still have info on them. This shockproof regular external HD suits your needs if that was the reason for wanting a SSD. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822211021&cm_sp=DailyDeal-_-22-211-021-_-Product

Which of these 3 portable hard drives is best?

Q. I need to get a new portable hard drive and I found these all similarly priced. They all have similar ratings and reviews so I need an opinion on which is best. I need one that can run fast and reliably and is very easy to use, like plug and play.

1. Toshiba

2. Western Digital

3. Seagate

Best way to backup a PC on to external hard drive?

Q. I currently have a PC with Windows 7 Ultimate on it. I will be moving to a new location soon and will be purchasing a new PC there.

Is there any way I can do a backup of my current PC onto an external hard drive so that when I get the new PC I can just transfer all of the files, including the software? My main concern is just keeping all of the software as-is on my current computer, so I am not burdened with having to reinstall all of it on to the new computer.

Answer
A backup of your files (music, photos, etc) is possible and can be done with the backup wizard or drag and drop.

You will not be able to back up your programs in this way because there is simply too much that make them run. You have files for any particular software located all over the hard drive, including program files, application data, common folders, registry entries and so on.

The only way to keep everything exactly as it is would be to do a clone of the hard drive. This is only good if you lose your original hard drive and will not work for putting your information onto a new computer.

External drive organizing and backup software?

mrrparker

I just bought a 320G external hard drive and would like to know what is the best way to organize and backup data to it. What would be the best software to do this with.
Thanks

Answer
You need a software for syncronizing your original and backup files.

Then problem with backups like external drives is in case of fire, stolen, etc.

The very important files you need backup in a off site location.
For this I use the mozy. The link below give you 2.25 GB for free online (off site) backup:

External hard drive or backup software?

qaz

I've never had the use for a backup software before but now I desperately need one! Which would be the most secure way to save my files: backup software or an external hard drive? I need to make sure that all my files will be in a secure place forever and Ever Lol. And by that I mean that I will never have to worry about loosing any files or the software/ hard drive to fail/ not work any more. Also ifever, Feel free to recommend specific products to me, whether it be one Or the other. Full points to whoever gives the best answer!
Also, any thoughts about the novaBackup 11.1 professional?

Please and thanks!

Answer
Copy pasting is annoying because file management and versioning issues come up and drive you aywall. I would recommend proper backup solution like using Acronis True Image (paid) or Clonezilla (free), simply make a full image backup of your hard drive, or just your files.

After you make the inital backup, any subsequent backups you make will be much quicker as only the file changes are saved. When you're copy pasting your files are going to be everywhere, they're not going to be encrypted so anyone who finds you usb thumb drive can steal your data.

Also consider an online backup services like SugarSync, you get 5GB for free, you simply choose which folders you want to safeguard, and the software will upload your files onto the webserver and even synchronise your data with another computer (say between your laptop and your desktop). That's by far the easiest way to backup IMO.

The paid SugarSync account gives 35GB and unlimited devices to synchronise with.

can someone give me some info about portable hard drives?

Q. i want to buy one and i have to clue about the prices, capacities or brands available in the market.
i live in canada and i have a sony laptop with an 80 gig of hard drive.

Answer
Hey there, I'll start with capacities as that is the most obvious thing.

The drives (from what I've seen, I just bought one today), come in very varied capacities, from 40GB to 1TB(terabyte - 1000 GB). Which size you buy, depends quite simply on how much you need/want. A good indication is what you have on your computer already - for instance I have 110 GB on my computer and I've been down to my last 5GB for a few months now (I have music and movies on it). So I wanted something definitely more than what came with my computer, and with some extra, so that I can transfer stuff from my computer to the hard drive (to help my computer run faster, XP issue).

The prices, at the moment, are not LARGELY different across sites. I don't know which part of the world you're in, but I'm in the UK, and I wanted between 160GB and 320GB and I was looking at £40 to £50. In the end I went with Amazon, because they had a 250GB for about £46 which I reasoned was pretty good value. Use a price-checking website like pricerunner.com to compare prices. Ebay could also be good, although it seems like the sellers on there are few and far between, and are Shop-sellers using "Buy It Now" so there's less chance of a bargain to be honest.

The brands, are like most electronics these days, numerous, and as far as I know, they're all pretty decent. Still to be safe, opt for names that you know of or trust, or manufacturers that offer good warranty length (I've seen up to 5 years). Some brands that IMHO are good are Lacie, Seagate, Freecom, and Western Digital(the one I bought). Please note, I am not saying these are the ONLY good ones though.

Hope all this helps, and you find something you're happy with!

P.S. You might see some websites call it "desktop" and some call it "portable" hard drives. I find that these are pretty much one and the same, I mean they'll fit in a backpack of some sort right?! And anyways there should be a size and weight description wherever you look, so you have an idea of how big/small it is.

Where can I get a cheap 1TB Portable Hard Drive [UK]?

Mac disk utility for external hard drive?

Tica

I am supposed to format my new external hard drive before I can use it with my Mac. The instructions tell me I need the Erase option in the Disk Utility but I can't find out how to access the Disk Utility. Can someone help?

Answer
Not sure why you say you are "supposed to format". Why not just use it as is? You can use FAT32 format with Mac, no problem. If it has NTFS format right out of the box, well, yeah, that should be formatted to FAT32, or as it is shown in Disk Utility, "MS-DOS file system". But you don't select the "Partition" tab. For non-Windows operating systems, the term "partition" is used only to designate one of the "divisions" of a physical drive, in the same sense that a room "partition" divides a room into more than one section. You should select the "Erase" tab. Although Windows systems do not list the word "Erase" related to drives, that is the term used in Mac OS to indicate format.

To open Disk Utility, get to the Finder by clicking on the desktop. Then click on "Go" in the menu bar and choose "Utilities". Then click on Disk Utility. Select the drive and then select the "Erase" tab. Choose the format "MS-DOS file system". If you choose the format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", you will have a disk that works with Mac or Windows systems with MacDrive installed so just don't do it unless you plan to use the drive only with Macs and you want better reliability than FAT32. You do not need to create small partitions for FAT32 although this idea is common. The Windows XP installer format option says you cannot create a partition size larger than 32GB but that is truly a limit set by that particular format application. Anytime I want to install Windows XP and use FAT32, I boot to a Windows 2000 SP4 CD which does not have this limitation and format from there, and then I restart to the Windows XP CD and install, no problem. There is no partition limit (based on today's available drive sizes) using Apple's Disk Utility.

By the way, Disk Utility can "secure erase" to the level of 35 pass overwrite, see link below.

How do i back up the data from my external hard drive to my mac?

tariq b

Here's my problem: I just got a new mac, and i have all my data on my hard drive. My hard drive isn't configured to function with macs. In order to configure my hard drive to work with my mac i have to format it and then it will give mew the option to chose a 'mac+windows' configuration. When i try to manually copy the data i keep getting errors and its just impossible. is there a way to easily copy the data from my hard drive to my mac so that i can format it??

Answer
I will give you my answer for this question:
"Can I use one HDD with both OS X and Windows?"

Maybe that is not your real question, but how could anyone guess?

You say "In order to configure my hard drive to work with my mac i have to format it."
Format means erase... and if the file system is different, create a new file system. Erase means all data is lost, gone forever. Is that what you want?

You say "and then it will give mew the option to chose a 'mac+windows' configuration" What is "it"? Do you mean Disk Utility? No way. The options are "Mac OS Extended", "MS-DOS File System" and "NTFS". Unless you make some special changes, "Mac" format is for Mac OS only, and NTFS is not for Mac OS. "MS-DOS File System" (a.k.a. Fat-32) is not a good choice for a large drive volume.

You say "When i try to manually copy the data i keep getting errors." Tell us the exact words in the error message. I can copy files from any Windows formatted HDD to my Mac OS X HDD with no errors, and I have done it several hundred times over the past five years with various Macs and with at least a hundred drives (90% of my students use Windows, and I copy from their drives). Tell us what happens exactly, and we can solve it for you.

To copy files from any NTFS formatted drive volume to a Mac formatted drive volume in OS X, no special software is needed. It just works.

To copy files to an NTFS format drive volume with OS X, install either NTFS-3G or SL-NTFS.

To use one HDD with both OS X and Windows, see the link below.

Your RAM sticks connect to your Motherboard just like your Hard Drive does. So you have to add more RAM to the Motherboard.

If they exist, what are some brands of portable rugged external solid state drives?

causant

I'm aware of SSD for internal hard drives, but I want an SSD as an external hard drive. I want one that isn't just shock-resistant but also dust and moisture resistant. I haven't found one yet, but I figure SSD external hard drives do exist. I also want around 500 GB of storage. I have a La Cie Rugged Hard Disk and there is a new model that does have 500GB of storage. It is a pocket size external hard disk. It also needs to Mac compatible. It would also be more useful if it were both PC and Mac compatible. Last, it needs to support MAC OS X Leopard's Time Machine. I am aware that not all external hard drives/disks support or are configured for Time Machine.

Buffalo nixes plans for first external SSD drive
The only drawback with this drive looked to be its price -- $800
By John E. Dunn

February 15, 2008 (TechWorld.com) Buffalo Technology Inc. has said that it has no plans to sell the world's first external drive based on solid-state technology, the MiniStation SHD-UHRS, in the U.K.

It now looks likely that the 2.5 inch form factor 100GB SSD drive, trailed by Japanese websites in December, was only a taster for future product directions and will never be sold outside the company's home market of Japan.

The drive would have been ideal for laptop users for whom the improved performance and lower power consumption of SSD technology would have scored well. As the first such drive based on USB 2.0, it is also slightly smaller than an equivalent drive based on conventional 2.5 inch HDD designs.

The only drawback with this drive looked to be its price -- over $800 based on a currency conversion from Yen -- giving it an uncomfortably high price per megabyte.

The company has at least super-sized its range of conventional 2.5 inch HDDs, announcing the "half a terabyte in your pocket" 500GB MiniStation . The drive comes with limited two-year warranty and costs $400 for the 500GB version.

The concept is identical, bar the capacity, to the MiniStation drive announced some months ago, right down to the same functional industrial design and wrap-around USB cable. The drive is compatible with Apple's much-criticized Time Machine backup system.

SSD drives started appearing in laptops some months ago, with a price premium to reflect their specialist nature. High-end drive systems based on SDD have even as reached as high 1.6TB, but the latest news confirms that mainstream SSD drives are only slowly emerging as direct competitors for conventional HDDs.

photoshop fonts and brushes, portable hard drive, and mac?

Q. I use photoshop a lot, which has me use lots of different fonts and brushes. I don't like the thought of my mac losing space because of this. could i put my fonts and brushes on a portable hard drive, and just plug in my hard drive whenever i use photoshop and my downloaded fonts and brushes then?
okay, now i have another question, after i download it and install it, can i delete the folder downloaded? or do i have to keep it?
on my dell laptop, which is the first place i had photoshop, including the fonts that came with the laptop, in total 396. i recently bought photoshop cs5 for my mac since my photoshop on my dell laptop was installed a long time ago (photoshop 7.0) so i just installed it on my mac two, three days ago.

Answer
Update:
You could go far beyond that and still not have a space issue.
Good luck to ya and happy Photoshopping.

Update:
Once you install the font you can delete it. When you click install it makes a copy of the font and places it in your font folder so you no longer need the first one

Side question:
How many fonts do you have approximately?

Don't worry about the space used by fonts and brushes. Fonts are only a few mb at most and brushes are only a few kb.

You have so much storage that it just does not make a difference.

Also what you want to do is not a function built into the Mac os or Photoshop.

You would have to write a custom script that would create a symbolic link to the external directory that contains the fonts and another for the brushes before Photoshop loads.

CAN I BACK UP MY PC FILES WITH MAC PORTABLE HARD DRIVE?

Q. I have windows 7 now,but I plan to own a Mac soon. Would a Mac hard drive back up windows files too?

Answer
The answer to this is complicated, but I found a good article here: http://thelightroomlab.com/2009/01/formatting-an-external-hard-drive/

You should read it carefully (maybe twice) to learn about disk formats, it is a very good thing to know about. Learning to format your hard drives properly is a great idea. Also, partitioning your drive into 2 sections with different formats works if you don't need to access files across Operating Systems. You can use Google to learn how to partition a drive on your Operating System fairly easily. I usually just use Dropbox to send files from my Mac to my PC or vice versa.

Can I convert the files from my Seagate External Hard Drive for PC to a Mac?

Cheeseball

My Dell laptop computer that is only 2 years old has a bad hard drive and has been going out on me for the last few months. I think that it is now time to get a new computer. I have all my important files backed up onto a Seagate 500 GB External Hard Drive. My question is, if I get an Apple Mac computer, will I be able to transfer the files that are on the hard drive to the Mac? The computers that I am considering right now are the Apple Mac Desktop all in one or the HP Touchsmart 600 all in one. Has anyone done this conversion before?

Answer
Yes. Your Mac will be able to at least read the hard drive. If the drive is formatted as FAT32, then your Mac can also write to it. Otherwise, to allow a Mac to write to an NTFS drive, then you'll need this: http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/

looking for a portable hard drive that works seamlessly between mac/pc. I work on both.?

trouble

Answer
Pretty much any USB portable hard drive that is Plug-and-Play Compliant will work on both Macs and PCs, providing you use a file system that works on both. NTFS is the standard for PCs, but Macs can only read files in that file system, not write them. A file system that will work with both Macs and PCs is FAT32. You can format your hard drive to FAT32 using Windows, just google it. A recommended hard drive for you is this one:
