portable hard drives 2tb image
Maddy
I've had my Macbook for about three years now. I use it mostly for iMovie and the mov flies take up a lot of space so I've been putting them on a portable hard-drive. Last week my portable hard-drive crashed so I got a new one and now the new one is having problems! I can't put the mov flies on my mac cuz if I do, i won't have any space. What do I do? Should I get another hard drive or a new mac?
Answer
Get a good quality external hard drive - far cheaper than buying a new mac.
I've had a Lacie 2TB external drive for my movies for about 3 years now, not a problem.
I also have another external drive that I just use for backups and not in use continually.
Make sure that it connects with Firewire and not just USB.

What's the difference between an external hard drive and a passport hard drive?

I have a western digital passport and I was just wondering why it's called a passport and not an external hard drive when I plug it into my laptop. Is it just what western digital calls them or is it something similar to a hard drive
Answer
Well External Hard Drive is just the category for them really as there are sub categories within this. Your passport is the name of Western Digitals range of harddrives and these types are called portable hard drives as they are small, plug and plays via usb and these most likely range from 160Gb to 320Gb.
Desktop hard drives on the other hand are much bigger (in physical size) with some requiring for them to be plugged into sockets due to the amount of power they consume. These have a larger capacity as well with typical sizes ranging from 500Gb and upwards to sizes such as 1Tb, 2Tb etc.
