how come i connect my portable hard drive in the PS3 but i doesnt not appear?

Leon

Answer
In order for a PS3 to read portable memory (External HDD, Thumbdrive, ETC.) the device must be formatted into the FAT32 format.

To do this, you can insert your portable to device into a Windows PC, open My Computer, and right click the drive. (ex: E:/ F:/ G:/), then select "Format".

Select FAT32 as the format and click "Start".

WARNING: All data on the portable device will be deleted, so make sure to back it up to the PC if you want to keep it, then place it on AFTER the format.

After this, the PS3 will easily read the inserted portable media.

Hard Drive swap on PS3...?

My 60 GB PS3 is dead, but the hard drive works fine. I have an external hard drive, but my PS3 won't turn on so I can't back up the hard drive. If I put the hard drive in my friends PS3 or bought a new one and put it in that, could I then make a backup of all my data for use on my new PS3 and new HDD?

Answer
Yes you can just unscrew that little box and pull the hard drive forward then out then unscrew the case and take it out.
Then Buy a new ps3 or use somebody Else's and put yours in and go to settings system backup and plug in a portable hard drive and backup. then buy a new PS3 and in setting up there should be restore system and make sure the drive is plugged in. then it should restore then your done!

You could then keep the hard drive as a spare or sell it on Ebay or another site

Play Public HD Bluray file from portable hard drive to PS3?

Slim Shady

I wanted to test out my new 5.1 speaker system which is hooked up to my PS3 through the receiver. I downloaded a 45GB Bluray movie from Public HD. Problem is, PS3 only reads FAT32 drives and FAT32 drives can only copy 4GB files at a time. Also even if i got it on the hard drive, how do make it so that the PS3 reads the file as a disc?

Answer
You can't play pirated movies using a flash drive on the ps3 console because of the anti piracy software cinavia so it's not worth your time trying .

at best the movie will play the video only and at worst it will not play at all after the console detects it is not a legit blu-ray with the 6 layers of security blu-ray movies and games have on them

if i buy a 80gb portable hard drive to backup my ps3 will it be fat32? or will i have to do something to make it fat32? please explain how!

Answer
depends on the drive . you can use a pc to reformat it if necessary or most can be formatted using the ps3 - just go to system settings , format utility and find it . be careful you don't accidentally format the ps3 instead
you can ask specifically for a fat32 format drive before purchase or just plug into the ps3 to see if it shows up - if you can , first plug into your pc and check it's specs , copy something to it ( like an mp3 file , put it in a folder called music ) and see if the drive shows on your xmb under the music section
most drives that directly plug into a usb port without an external power supply are now fat32 but ask before buying and make sure they will show you on the package or manual where it says it is , don't just trust the employee

How do i back up my PS3 onto my portable hard drive?

Mark

Answer
There is a feature on your PS3 to create a backup for your HD. It is under system settings and you can back it up from there. You will need to make sure that your external HD is formatted correctly (FAT32) or it will not read once you connect it to your PS3 via USB.
