Laptop Hard Drive?

psp251

I have an HP Pavilion dv6113us which only has 80 gb initially. I want to upgrade it so that it's 320 gb or higher. How would I go about doing this? How am I supposed to know what size hard drive to buy? Are they all the same?

Answer
I am almost positive you cannot, get that internal with a lap top. I would just go external if I were you. You can probably also get a non -portable external hard drive for pretty cheap at a store like walmart or best buy/

What is a good portable hard drive for PS3? What is a good internal hard drive for PS3?

WiiPS3 Pla

I don't want to spend more than $100 on either.

Answer
A good internal Hard drive for the PS3 would be any 2.5 inch SATA hard drive.

Here's some links to a hard drive that can be used Internally for the PS3 that's under $100 dollars:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9208971#Specifications

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/500917-REG/Western_Digital_WD2500BEVSRTL_250_GB_Scorpio_2_5_.html

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/484050-REG/Western_Digital_WD1600BEVSRTL_160_GB_Scorpio_2_5_.html

The brand name for the PS3's Internal Hard drive really doesn't matter, but personally I would go for a Seagate or Western Digital Internal Hard drive.

Any portable USB External Hard drive should be fine, but here's some links that I found:

can i put games in this hard drive?

Wolf Ch

i want to store my sims games and spore and stuffs since sims always have a ton of expansion packs and i would love it to be external so it doesn't slow down my macbook. is this one ok? (i asked on the site but i had no answers so i was hoping i could get some here) http://store.apple.com/uk/product/TW883ZM/A/Iomega-500GB-eGo-Portable-Hard-Drive-Mac-Edition?fnode=MTY1NDA0Nw&mco=MTE0Mzk1MzQ

Answer
I played Games from external hard drive and they worked fine. But it will only work for the computer you installed it on. Just make sure the drive letter and path do not change each time you connect it. Any MAC compatible hard drive will do.

I agree, you can go with a cheaper alternative. I used Transcend 160 GB.

can someone give me some info about portable hard drives?

Q. i want to buy one and i have to clue about the prices, capacities or brands available in the market.
i live in canada and i have a sony laptop with an 80 gig of hard drive.

Answer
Hey there, I'll start with capacities as that is the most obvious thing.

The drives (from what I've seen, I just bought one today), come in very varied capacities, from 40GB to 1TB(terabyte - 1000 GB). Which size you buy, depends quite simply on how much you need/want. A good indication is what you have on your computer already - for instance I have 110 GB on my computer and I've been down to my last 5GB for a few months now (I have music and movies on it). So I wanted something definitely more than what came with my computer, and with some extra, so that I can transfer stuff from my computer to the hard drive (to help my computer run faster, XP issue).

The prices, at the moment, are not LARGELY different across sites. I don't know which part of the world you're in, but I'm in the UK, and I wanted between 160GB and 320GB and I was looking at £40 to £50. In the end I went with Amazon, because they had a 250GB for about £46 which I reasoned was pretty good value. Use a price-checking website like pricerunner.com to compare prices. Ebay could also be good, although it seems like the sellers on there are few and far between, and are Shop-sellers using "Buy It Now" so there's less chance of a bargain to be honest.

The brands, are like most electronics these days, numerous, and as far as I know, they're all pretty decent. Still to be safe, opt for names that you know of or trust, or manufacturers that offer good warranty length (I've seen up to 5 years). Some brands that IMHO are good are Lacie, Seagate, Freecom, and Western Digital(the one I bought). Please note, I am not saying these are the ONLY good ones though.

Hope all this helps, and you find something you're happy with!

P.S. You might see some websites call it "desktop" and some call it "portable" hard drives. I find that these are pretty much one and the same, I mean they'll fit in a backpack of some sort right?! And anyways there should be a size and weight description wherever you look, so you have an idea of how big/small it is.

Question about Verbatim 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 96822 ?

~:;guess;:

Verbatim 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 96822

Now I don't know exactly what the point of the long name is or wat it mean, but I was hoping someone could explain it to me. I understand the 320 GB is the amount of memory I think, but the one thing I dont know is what the 2.0 means. Can someone help me out?

Answer
It's USB version 2.0 . As opposed to USB version 1.1, 1.0, etc.
Portable means it's portable.
Verbatim is the manufacturing company.
External means it's external.. it doesn't go IN your computer..
And 96822 is probably the model number or SKU#.

my portable hard drive dosent work on my computer any more?

my verbatim JH8809 portable hard drive wont work any more,
i pluged it into the computer and i can see the hard drive starting up but nothing comes up on the computer, i tried going to computer management but nothings there

any1 know what to do???
i have alot of important stuff in there pleasssssssssseeeeeeeeeeee help me

Answer
i hate to say it but it sounds as though the hard drive has reached the end of it's life. does it make a ticking noise?...or perhaps grinding?
there really isn't much you can do. try a system restore. [it probably won't work]

follow this path:

1/ start
2/ all programs
3/ accessories
4/ system tools
5/ system restore

a new window will open. click on "restore my computer to an earlier time" then hit next.
choose a date prior to the start of your problems, and follow prompts. be aware that this will reverse any changes you have made to your pc in the intervening time, but items contained in folders will remain unchanged. when pc reboots it will take a couple of minutes before you can use the desktop and start menu again. this is quite normal and you should not be tempted to try to interrupt the restore process.
if you manage to get the hard drive icon back into "my computer", you should then do a disk check.

follow this path:

1/ start
2/ my computer
3/ right click on hard drive icon and hit "properties"
4/ click on "tools"
5/ click on "error checking" and "check now"
6/ a new window opens, check the boxes for "automatically fix file system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors", click on start.

if you have got this far, then a disk check can take many hours, depending on the size of the disk. you should be allowing around 1 hour per 100 gigs. NEVER INTERRUPT A DISK CHECK!!!...LET IT RUN IT'S COURSE, NO MATTER HOW LONG IT MAY TAKE.

i really hope that this works for you, but i have a feeling it is all over for this drive. in future make sure you have at least 2 back-ups. good luck.

Password Protect Portable Hard Drive?

Justin S

I have seen a bunch of other questions much like mine on here but none of them really had the answer I was looking for. Also Please don't say search google because believe it or not I actually tried that already.

Ok I have a portable WD hard drive about 400 gigs large. I would like a program to password protect it. However, I would like to stay away from encryption and I need to be able to use it on different computers without installing the program on each of them. I don't need super secure encryption just a simple lock that will keep stupid people from trying to get in.

I tried Axcrypt but I had to wait for it to decrypt the entire drive before I could use it (took a long time), that is why I want to stay away from encryption. I tried a program called folder castle but it only works on the computer its installed on.

I have heard a lot of people suggest TrueCrypt but I don't want to run in to the same problem as AxCrypt. A lot of the files are video or PowerPoint so I don't want it lagging or buffering all the time or long loading ahead of time, thats why Im afraid to try it (unless someone has tried it with these kinds of files).

I realize Im asking a lot but I have been searching for a while but so far when I find a new program it ends up being a let down. So more than anything if you can vouch for a program that you have tried then I will give it a try.

Thanks for the help

Answer
Try the following usb security tool which allows you to password protect protable hard drive.
http://www.disk-utilities.com/usb-encryption/index.html

The usb encryption software allows you to create a resizable encrypted area on portable hard drive for your confidential data. To protect your files, you just need to drag and drop them on the encrypted area. It is easy to use, just cost you a few seconds.

With password, the encrypted data is accessible on portable hard drive in any computer even without the security software installed. After installing USB Drive Encryption in your device, you can also encrypt and decrypt files on portable hard drive in a third computer.

I am looking for a Portable Hard Drive (Dont Care about the Cost) It must be compatable with Vista and XP, Secure, and most importantly fail-safe. Can you help me out here?
I require this, because I lost ALL my info on my labtop and I dont want to lose it again (failed drive).
External Drives Only

Answer
No hard drive is fail-safe. Period.

You could always buy a hard drive closure with a RAID controller and set up a RAID 1 array. What this means is that you'll have two hard drives with identical copies of one another... so if one fails, the other will still work. And the chances of having dual simultaneous HD failures is low.

If you want secure and portable, you could buy Corsair's 8 GB USB flash drive. It has a padlock so that you can lock the drive until you enter the correct code for it to function again.

There's always Tape drives, which are a rather expensive backup media, but rather reliable.

Nothing is fail-safe. It's only a matter of time... whether it's 1 year... or 10 years.

Portable Hard drive problems!?

Billy

My parents recently bought an HP Portable Hard Drive from good old Costco and forgot the password. We have called best buy the source and who knows who else and they say "There is nothing we can do". This thing cost $120.00 I hope there is something or someone that could help us get access to it again. Thanks

Answer
lol if its encrypted (it is) then the ONLY thing that can get into it is the password. you can format it and lose everything on it, but unless you remember the password, your stuff is gone.

How is the Macbook Air 128 gb? Is it better than the Macbook Air 64 gb and why?

Dionna Dav

I currently have a Dell Inspiron laptop and am going to be a freshman in high school this year. I mostly need this laptop to go on the internet for research, essays, powerpoints, and maybe notes. Sometimes I will need it for entertainment and I want to know if it has large speakers and great sound. I already know that the laptop does not come with a Cd drive so can I buy one separately on the Apple website? I would like to have advice from someone who currently owns a Macbook Air 128 gb and someone who owns a Macbook Pro 500 gb. Top answer will be chosen between today, June 2,2012 and June 4,2012, Monday. This will be a graduation present.

Answer
That 128GB and 64GB refers to the size of the hard drive, nothing more than that. They are equally good therefore, but one simply has more storage space. As for the choice between a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air is more portable, it is lighter and has a smaller screen. The MacBook Pro is the powerhouse of the two, intended for people who demand more from a notebook. The MacBook Air is for those who want a highly portable notebook. If you need more processing power, a better graphics card, a built in disc drive, then go for the MacBook Pro. If you want a portable notebook which is fast too, but which is more intended to be portable, then go for the MacBook Air. You can always purchase a separate Apple SuperDrive, which is a portable disc drive by Apple.

bootmgr is compressed?

Satish

I tried to use a loader to activate windows 7 ultimate that I got from my friend but at the end of the activation, my screen went blank and had the writing bootmgr is compressed. Press ctrl alt del to restart. When I pressed it, it just came back to the bootmgr is compressed screen again.

I went into the boot options and am now currently trying to restore my backup from my portable hard drive. The screen is blank with some blinking line at the top left side of the screen and it won't let me do anything.

My questions are will this fix the problem, how long does it usually take to restore from a portable hard drive, do I have to take further action, and could anyone please recommend on how to solve this. I have been at it since 10:15pm on 5/2/2012 and it's still doing it (11:15am 5/3/2012).

As you might have guessed, I do not have an installation disk.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Answer
I hope you have a back up of your data...How to reinstall a operating system with out a recovery disk. If you can't find the ones that you made or the ones that came with the computer. I assumed you already tried (and failed) to use the [ recovery partition.] this is the easy way... This means that the next step is to call tech support, and tell them that the recovery partition doesn't work, or you can't find the recovery discs you made... and then they can SELL you a set of recovery discs that you may have to copy to a usb drive.

That's just the way it works. There are two other ways use any other disk and when it is time to activate, call Microsoft on the phone with the activation window open and give them the coa or product code on the phone and they will activate and give you a number at that time.

You need the OEM installation specifically for the same version of the windows that came with your laptop. Otherwise, anything other than an OEM installation of that is the same kind that came with your laptop (Basic, Professional, etc) your product key won't work. Of course, if you choose to go that route, make sure you FIRST download all the drivers for your model laptop... else you might have trouble going on line afterwards to get the drivers.
This site has general information to help Install, reinstall, and uninstall Windows - Help & How-to - Microsoft Windows
This site you can down load windows files legally http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-â¦
But then you have to burn iso file to a DVD or usb drive and it is not that easy to do. To get a good accurate answer give the brand, model number, installed operating system of the laptop when asking a question as all PC's are not the same. Hey, I enjoyed your question, I have worked as a technician most of my life, I hope I have helped you...You may email me at mayray40@Yahoo.com

Can you backup PS3 and a PC on the same external Hard Drive?

Bensock

I was looking at getting a 1TB external hard drive so i could backup my PS3, but I want to be able to backup my PC as well on the same drive. Would that be possible?

The HDD doesn't need to be formatted differently for each machine? Thanks for any help

Answer
As long as you format as FAT32, you're fine.

It'll work on both systems.

Personally, I sectored my hard drive into two smaller hard drives. One fat32, and one NTFS. Now I can use it anywhere!

How can I backup 40GB worth of data in my pc using an external hard drive?

sevenor

I use Norton Ghost together with DVD-RW as the media for backing up. Unfortunately, as the DVD burner I use (Liteon SOHW-1693) only burns DVD-RW at 4X,it requires more than 10 hours, plus I have to be there to keep changing the DVD-RW. Is there a backup software out there that recognises external hard disk drive (connected through USB 2.2 port) as the backup media and is fast. Thanks!

Answer
I would highly recommend CasperXP. It's saved me a few times now and makes a complete bootable clone of the disk. The best thing is that it can backup whilst you are still using XP and has smart clone technology so that on subsequent backups it will only backup changed sectors of the hard disk reducing backup time considerably. It will work with external USB hard disks.

What is a good portable hard drive for PS3? What is a good internal hard drive for PS3?

A good internal Hard drive for the PS3 would be any 2.5 inch SATA hard drive.

Here's some links to a hard drive that can be used Internally for the PS3 that's under $100 dollars:

Any portable USB External Hard drive should be fine, but here's some links that I found:

how to transfer files to external hard drive in a Apple iMac in Single User Mode?

Q. okay my iMac hard drive is in the point of collapse, Mac OSX wont load after an update and its stuck in an endless loop when it tries to load X, nevertheless, i have to transfer a ton of files to my external hard drive in order to back up these very very important documents. mac osx works good only in single user mode and i need to copy and paste a directory into my external hard drive... can someone please tell me step by step the commands to transfer the files...i also need to know extactly how to mount the external hard drive...i believe im suppose to sudo cp /User/<myname> then something please help im lost

Answer
If you have a Firewire cable and external hard drive, you should be able to boot the iMac from the factory DVD and transfer directly from the iMac to the drive.

If have a friend with a Mac OSX and a Firewire cable, start up the friend's Mac. Once finished starting up connect the Macs with the Firewire cable and start up your iMac, holding down the 'T' key. The friends iMac should show a new Firewire drive, your iMac. You should be able to transfer files without mucking about with the Terminal.

If neither of these is an option, do you have an Apple Store nearby?

How to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive on an iMac?

Jimmy S

Here's my tools:
A new (2008) 24" iMac 3.06ghz, 2gb of ram, 250gb of hard drive space with windows vista ultimate installed.

A 500gb western digital My Book edition external hard drive.
A 250GB maxtor OneTouch II external hard drive.

I would like a guide to show me how to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive (either one hard drive is fine) on a mac. I have done a little research and know that I have to have a live cd and that I have to set up my computer to have the bios boot from cd but I am not sure how to do that on a mac. Any guide would be fine.
All of the answers so far are great advice and exactly what I am looking for however, like one answers dictates, how do you go about changing the bios on a mac?

Answer
You can go to
https://help.ubuntu.com/
or
http://www.ubuntu.com/support
for help. Also try
http://ubuntuforums.org/
for user forums to help you figure it out. Do you have your Live CD yet?
If so, put it in your drive, making sure your external is connected, and reboot your computer. It may boot from the disk, if so, install it on the external.
You can try it without installing it, and it will run from the cd, and there will be a desktop environment with an install icon on the desktop. double click it, and choose the drive you wish to install it on, and follow the prompts. hope I helped, I just began using it about 2 weeks ago. It helps if you have Linux experience, I ran Debian for a couple of years on my server, but Ubuntu is great. Hope you enjoy!

Answer
Buying a laptop hard drive or external/portable hard drive for someone who doens't have a great deal of knowledge could be confusing. I sincerely hope the information below will help you when deciding to buy a hard drive or portable hard drive, and will also save you some money and headaches.

ALWAYS CHECK IF THE HARD DRIVE COMES WITH THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY

Notebook 2.5" hard drives sold on eBay could either have the manufaturer's warranty, used, a new pull, sold as is, refurbished or white label. If your goal is to invest money on quality products, and mostly importantly, not be disappointed with your purchase, I would recommend you buy a product which comes with full manufacturer's warranty. What does this mean? Manufacturer's warranty starts from the date the hard drive was manufactured and NOT the day it was sold or used. Most hard drives and most manufacturers, including Toshiba, Hitachi and Fujitsu offer a 3-year warranty on the product, again from the day it was manufactured and NOT the day it was purchased. Seagate now offers a 5-year warranty on its 2.5" laptop hard drives.

WHICH BRAND SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Major brands are Fujitsu, Toshiba, Hitachi and Seagate. I personally think that the 4 companies provide excellent products. Based on my experience with the 2.5" hard drives, I think that Fujitsu's hard drives are the quietest (whisper quiet.) But again, whichever brand you choose might not matter that very much. All of the 4 companies I mentioned are really extremely reputable. It is perhaps a personal brand choice. Just make sure to pick a new product with the warranty.

DO YOU REALLY SAVE MONEY IF YOU DECIDE TO BUY A HARD DRIVE WITH NO WARRANTY?

Imagine buying a hard drive or portable hard drive without any warranty. Let's say the hard drive is really new and never used before. Remember, as I mentioned above, the hard drive warranty starts from the day it was manufactured and not sold. Imagine if for some reason or other, the hard drive fails within a short period of time. Now what? The seller is really not responsible at all, assuming that he/she stated everything part of the eBay listing. It is very understandable that the buyer might feel betrayed, but this is the reason why I am writing this guide. Saving a couple of dollars on a refurbished, white label, used, or as is hard drive, is perhaps not saving money at all. If the hard drive fails, you will end up losing all your money (unless there is some kind of warranty, either through the manufacturer or the seller.)

MAKE SURE TO CHECK WHETHER YOU NEED A SATA OR PATA HARD DRIVE

SATA is the next generation of portable 2.5" hard drives. SATA (Serial ATA) is the successor to the legacy Advanced Technology Attachment standard (ATA, also known as IDE). IDE is the older technology which was retroactively renamed Parallel ATA (PATA) to distinguish it from Serial ATA. Fujitsu has established itself as the leader in the 2.5" SATA hard disk drive space delivering the industryâs first 2.5" SATA hard disk drive in the world in January 2004. If you are replacing a hard drive, just make sure that you are getting the one you need. Check if the hard drive is either PATA or SATA.

Just out of these 3 i cant decide please help !!
thanks

Answer
I'd go with the cheapest one, unless having the larger screen is really important to you. I have a larger pro laptop and it's heavy. Spending $1000 more for a screen that is only a bit larger seems too costly. As the the difference in hard drive size, you can buy a portable terabyte external drive for about $100 and can use it for backups or extra storage as needed.

MacBook pro 2011 v.s a iMac desktop?

Jessica

Hi. I am having a difficulty time deciding which apple computer should I get for the summer. I like the MacBook pro for its portability. I am a university student who currently own a MacBook 2008 version but is looking for more external hard drive space to download movies, applications, and get good hd graphics. The application i want to download is Final Cut Pro, Adobe photoshop, after effects, motions, and other media applications. I will be using the computer to edit my film projects for school (heavily) and personal stuff. I am planning to get an iMac or a MacBook pro. The down side with an iMac is that I need it to be portable. I really like both. Since I own a MacBook laptop already should get a MacBook or a iMac. So what do u guys think. Please help me decide. Thanks.

Answer
For video editing I personally like the top spec 15" macbook pro although if you already have a macbook then maybe the iMac makes more sense.

Before you buy Final Cut Pro, Apple are releasing new video editing software called Final Cut Pro X (ten) in June at a fraction of the price ($299) of the old Final Cut Pro.

recommended external hard drive for a laptop?

crazyjacks

Almost out of space on my laptop, want to get an external usb hard drive. Looking for at least 500GB, but preferrably 1TB+

What are good, relatively cheap ones, that work with laptops?

Thanks.

Answer
You heed a portable external hard drive- one that does not require an external power source.

This one is cheap for the 1tb size ($85).

Can you watch movies in .avi format on a ps3 that are saved on a portable hard drive?

rsalyers44

I was getting movies that are in .avi format and putting them on a portable hard drive and was watching them on my xbox 360. I was thinking of switching to a ps3 and was wondering if you can watch them on the playstation 3???

Answer
Yeah, you can. The good thing about the PS3 is that it supports way more audio and video formats than the Xbox 360, which is great if you have a diverse media library, but a horrible problem is that it can't read NTFS-formatted hard drives, only FAT, which sucks.

PS3 - Compatable portable hard drives?

Q. Just wondering is there anyway a portable hard drive would play avi files straight from the hard drive if connected to the PS3 through the USB fitting. or do thay always have to be on the ps3's hard drive for that to work?
Every video file I have saved onto my PS3 Hard drive at present is an AVI file and works fine. Its just getting full the now.

IF i convert a portable one to FAT32 format, am I right in saying that would reduce the memory of the portable hard drive?

Answer
it has to be formatted in fat32 to play files , the ps3 does not play avi files , just convert each file to mp4 useing a simple video convertor , just google it , only use a free one

External Hard Drive question?

Tobi

I bought an external hard drive to back up my mac from Best Buy recently. Everything backed up ok, but I experienced problems with the hard drive later on. I am deciding to return the hard drive. What I'm worried about: Is it possible for someone to steal your info from an external hard drive like this if I choose to return it? Or does Best Buy wipe the thing clean?

Answer
They can, but it would be rare, the best thing to do to make sure and to keep your details safe would be to use your computers default formatting software, then download some formatting software from websites such as http://www.cnet.com Make sure it has a feature such as 'Deep Clean' or something similar, it will take off most of the data :)

mac book air?

zsaazsaaba

my dad's a ceo for one of apple's branches... so he gave me a new macbook air. he just left for a business trip and i have no clue how to burn a cd on this thing!!

is it even possible to burn a cd on the optical drive??

Answer
There is no optical drive.
So you have to buy a external one.

why the air is full of air:
the macbook air doesn't have a DVD drive.

It is $1800 for the "base model" and $3000 for the "high end one"

Why?

1. Very bad hard drive
When you spend $1800 for a computer, you expect a good hard drive. Instead, you get the crappy, slow 80 GB 4200 rpm HD.
If you "upgrade" to the $3000 model, you get a 64 GB hard drive. Its a SSD, but it won't improve performance much.

Now, if you don't know how small 80 GB is, when you get the laptop, it will only have about 75-76 GB avaliable.
The operating system and bundled software will use up about 10 GB.
So in reality, you will have about 65 GB of space left.
And you will have about 50 GB of space in the "upgraded" $3000 model.
50 GB is about 27.5 hours of DVD video.
Very small.

2. Slow CPU. A $1800 laptop ought to have the 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, but apple gives you a crummy 1.6 GHz with that much money.

3. Graphics- 144 MB integrated- I don't want to even talk about it.

4. Size- despite what apple says, the mac air is not the thinnest laptop around, and certainly not the lightest.
http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/toshiba-portege-r500-s5002/4505-3121_7-32466957.html?tag=pdtl-list
This laptop is much lighter, and smaller, and only .01 inch thicker, but it actually has a DVD drive, and is much less expensive.

5. limited expansion room.
You only get ONE USB port and a mini DVI for video- not even full size.
Plus, the case is so small, you cannot hope to expand anything inside it.

How Do Portable Hard Drives Work?

javagrl

I got a Western Digital 500GB Portable Hard drive for x-mas and I want to use it to store my photos on there instead of on the computer. I'm a photographer. I have never used a portable hard drive before and was wondering is it just where I can drag and drop files into my portable hard drive or will it sync to my computer and store everything in there? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, no mean comments please. I would like it to be a drag and drop thing since I only want to store photos on there. Any advice would be great.

Answer
treat it like any hard drive, you can drag and drop files like you can with any flash drive or other storage device.
