how to transfer files to external hard drive in a Apple iMac in Single User Mode?

Q. okay my iMac hard drive is in the point of collapse, Mac OSX wont load after an update and its stuck in an endless loop when it tries to load X, nevertheless, i have to transfer a ton of files to my external hard drive in order to back up these very very important documents. mac osx works good only in single user mode and i need to copy and paste a directory into my external hard drive... can someone please tell me step by step the commands to transfer the files...i also need to know extactly how to mount the external hard drive...i believe im suppose to sudo cp /User/<myname> then something please help im lost

If you have a Firewire cable and external hard drive, you should be able to boot the iMac from the factory DVD and transfer directly from the iMac to the drive.

If have a friend with a Mac OSX and a Firewire cable, start up the friend's Mac. Once finished starting up connect the Macs with the Firewire cable and start up your iMac, holding down the 'T' key. The friends iMac should show a new Firewire drive, your iMac. You should be able to transfer files without mucking about with the Terminal.

If neither of these is an option, do you have an Apple Store nearby?

Here's my tools:
A new (2008) 24" iMac 3.06ghz, 2gb of ram, 250gb of hard drive space with windows vista ultimate installed.

A 500gb western digital My Book edition external hard drive.
A 250GB maxtor OneTouch II external hard drive.

I would like a guide to show me how to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive (either one hard drive is fine) on a mac. I have done a little research and know that I have to have a live cd and that I have to set up my computer to have the bios boot from cd but I am not sure how to do that on a mac. Any guide would be fine.
All of the answers so far are great advice and exactly what I am looking for however, like one answers dictates, how do you go about changing the bios on a mac?

If so, put it in your drive, making sure your external is connected, and reboot your computer. It may boot from the disk, if so, install it on the external.
You can try it without installing it, and it will run from the cd, and there will be a desktop environment with an install icon on the desktop. double click it, and choose the drive you wish to install it on, and follow the prompts. hope I helped, I just began using it about 2 weeks ago. It helps if you have Linux experience, I ran Debian for a couple of years on my server, but Ubuntu is great. Hope you enjoy!

I just got an external hard drive and i wanted to know if there was a way to view all of my files and just drag them onto the hard drive. I have an iMac with a very small amount of hard drive space left, so i want to manually transfer ALL of my data to the 1TB hard drive. How do i do that?

This is called cloning. You will most likely need cloning software from the manufacturer of your iMac, or else you may be forced to look for alternatives which may cost money, or at least time finding free alternatives.






You can move most of your data over using copy/paste + shift (or is it CTRL not sure which.)

Here are the steps to make the copy of your iPhoto library.

Quit iPhoto if it is running.
Make sure your external drive is connected and turned on. In the Finder, the external drive will show as an orange drive icon in the left pane.
Open two Finder windows and position them one on top of the other.
In the top Finder window, start at your Home folder (the one with the icon of the house and your user name by it) and select the Pictures folder. Inside the Pictures folder you should see a folder called iPhoto Library.
In the bottom Finder window, select your external drive. That is where we are copying the iPhoto Library to.
Select the iPhoto Library folder from the top Finder window. Drag it to the bottom Finder window. This will start a copy process. How long the copy takes depends on how large your iPhoto library is, but it should take at least several minutes.
Now we need to tell iPhoto that you have moved the iPhoto library and where to look for it.

Tell iPhoto '06 & '08 to look for the Library

Hold down the Option key on the keyboard and open iPhoto. You will see a dialog box like the one on the right.
Click the Choose Library. You will get a standard Open dialog window.
Click on your external hard drive icon (the orange one) in the left pane. You should then see the iPhoto Library folder that you copied earlier.
Select the iPhoto Library folder and click the Open button. iPhoto will open and you should see your photos.

Tell iPhoto '09 to choose the Library

If iPhoto is open, quit it.
Go to the Pictures folder of your Home folder.
Rename "iPhoto Library" to "iPhoto Library.old". (To rename a file, click the file name once. Pause a second, then click the file name again. The file name will be highlighted in light blue and you can type to rename the file.)
Open iPhoto. You will see a dialog box like the one on the right. If you don't see the dialog box, click the iPhoto icon on your Dock. This dialog box likes to hide behind other windows for some reason.
There will be two items listed in the scroll box, one called "iPhoto Library" and one called "iPhoto Library.old". Select "iPhoto Library". (This is the one that you moved to the external hard drive.)
Click the Choose button.
iPhoto will open and you should see your photos.
