can i put games in this hard drive?

Wolf Ch

i want to store my sims games and spore and stuffs since sims always have a ton of expansion packs and i would love it to be external so it doesn't slow down my macbook. is this one ok? (i asked on the site but i had no answers so i was hoping i could get some here) http://store.apple.com/uk/product/TW883ZM/A/Iomega-500GB-eGo-Portable-Hard-Drive-Mac-Edition?fnode=MTY1NDA0Nw&mco=MTE0Mzk1MzQ

Answer
I played Games from external hard drive and they worked fine. But it will only work for the computer you installed it on. Just make sure the drive letter and path do not change each time you connect it. Any MAC compatible hard drive will do.

I agree, you can go with a cheaper alternative. I used Transcend 160 GB.

can someone give me some info about portable hard drives?

Q. i want to buy one and i have to clue about the prices, capacities or brands available in the market.
i live in canada and i have a sony laptop with an 80 gig of hard drive.

Answer
Hey there, I'll start with capacities as that is the most obvious thing.

The drives (from what I've seen, I just bought one today), come in very varied capacities, from 40GB to 1TB(terabyte - 1000 GB). Which size you buy, depends quite simply on how much you need/want. A good indication is what you have on your computer already - for instance I have 110 GB on my computer and I've been down to my last 5GB for a few months now (I have music and movies on it). So I wanted something definitely more than what came with my computer, and with some extra, so that I can transfer stuff from my computer to the hard drive (to help my computer run faster, XP issue).

The prices, at the moment, are not LARGELY different across sites. I don't know which part of the world you're in, but I'm in the UK, and I wanted between 160GB and 320GB and I was looking at £40 to £50. In the end I went with Amazon, because they had a 250GB for about £46 which I reasoned was pretty good value. Use a price-checking website like pricerunner.com to compare prices. Ebay could also be good, although it seems like the sellers on there are few and far between, and are Shop-sellers using "Buy It Now" so there's less chance of a bargain to be honest.

The brands, are like most electronics these days, numerous, and as far as I know, they're all pretty decent. Still to be safe, opt for names that you know of or trust, or manufacturers that offer good warranty length (I've seen up to 5 years). Some brands that IMHO are good are Lacie, Seagate, Freecom, and Western Digital(the one I bought). Please note, I am not saying these are the ONLY good ones though.

Hope all this helps, and you find something you're happy with!

P.S. You might see some websites call it "desktop" and some call it "portable" hard drives. I find that these are pretty much one and the same, I mean they'll fit in a backpack of some sort right?! And anyways there should be a size and weight description wherever you look, so you have an idea of how big/small it is.

It is the second time that I have lost all my music from my ipot. Every time that I covert a CD to my itunes and after I passed it to my ipot,I erase from my itunes library because my computer is so slow. So anybody know how to pass my music from my ipot to a external hard drive. I dont have any music in my computer now all of it is in my ipot.

Answer
I am assuming you have a pc, if you have a mac, your instructions would be different:

"To begin, download and install PodUtil from this website: http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/software/podutil.php

Next, connect your iPod using USB2.0 or Firewire to the computer youâd like to upload to.

Important Note:

Windows: If iTunes isnât installed yet, your iPod will show up as a portable hard drive automatically. This is fine. If iTunes is already installed on the souce computer, it will likely open and ask if youâd like to associate this iPod with this computer, deleting its content. CLICK NO!! In many cases, youâre doing this because the iPod is your only copy of your library⦠you donât wanât to delete it!! Ensure that âEnable Disk Useâ is selected as we did in last weekâs article.

Mac: iTunes will open and ask if youâd like to associate this iPod with this computer, deleting its content. CLICK NO!! In many cases, youâre doing this because the iPod is your only copy of your library⦠you donât wanât to delete it!! Ensure that âEnable Disk Useâ is selected as we did in last weekâs article.

Next, launch PodUtil. PodUtil will detect your iPod, parse through its database, and display a list of all of your tracks in the main window, with a listing of your playlists on the left:

In this window, you can search for tracks (in the top right corner) or preview them straight off of the iPod by double clicking on one.

Copying Tracks to the Computer

To prepare for the music copying process, there are a few things which must be done first.

Set your Copy Directory: At the bottom of the main PodUtil window, select a directory that you would like PodUtil to copy your iPod music to.

Define your Copy Preferences: At the bottom right of the main window, open the âCopy Settingsâ button. This will open a new window where you can define several options. To have PodUtil create separate subdirectories for each Artist and Album in your collection, select these two options. You will likely want to turn on the iTunes features as well⦠these will take the copied songs, add them to your library, and recreate your iTunes playlists!âtwo very, very helpful features when restoring a lost library.

De-select the songs (either in the main track list or in individual playlists) that you donât want to transfer to the computer.

Click âCopyâ in the bottom right of the main window to begin the process!
Youâll find the the upload occurs at a rather fast rate. You can monitor the progress of your upload either at the bottom of the main window (as a progress bar), or in the track list (in the form of icons turning to green).

When the upload is complete, youâll have a directory (or, if you selected the appropriate options, an iTunes Library) full of your iPod music. With only a few button clicks, you have now transferred your iPodâs entire music library to your computer. We didnât need to search the iPod for its hidden directory or even use a file browser!

Advanced Copying Methods

If you decide to pay for a PodUtil registration key, you gain access to the features in the âAdvancedâ tab of the âCopy Settingsâ window. These features, although not necessary for most users, are incredibly powerful for music management enthusiasts.

PodUtilâs advanced copying features enable you to specify a custom directory structure and filename format for the files that are copied from the iPod.

To try it out, enter into the âCopy Settingsâ window and choose âAdvancedâ from the pulldown menu. You will be presented with options for âPathâ and âFilename.â To the far right are pull-down menus for popular choices here, and the option to input your custom template. While this system for templates may look a bit daunting at first, it really isnât.

For example, a Filename template of â{%Album} - {%Track} - {%artist} ({%size}).{%extension}â will yield a filename such as:

Dark Side of the Moon - 4 - Pink Floyd (5.1MB).mp3

Use the built-in advanced options as a template for your ideas, and be aware that you can also use these tags <http://forum.kennettnet.co.uk/index.php?act=ST&f=3&t=11> as well.

(Keep in mind that these advanced File and Pathname features are superfluous if you ultimately plan on importing all the music into iTunes, and you have iTunes set to âKeep my Music Library Organized.")

How to run photoshop off an external hard drive?

TaiitooX

Basically I have an external hard drive with photoshop on it. The problem is when I am at home; the program will happily run but at college it says it is loading; but doesn't seem to load even after an hour or two! Any way to actually get this working or is it actually impossible?
So now I understand that you can't run it on a public computer, but also I don't have a college or library that has photoshop installed on a computer. Also I don't get along with GIMP as I currently have that also on my hard drive. Any other suggestions?

Answer
Photoshop can't be installed on external disks - it specifically says it can't do that on the Photoshop Tech Specs page here: http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/photoshop/tech-specs.html

"1GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on removable flash storage devices)"

Adobe does NOT make portable version of Photoshop - any that you find claiming to be "portable" are pirated and illegal, and come with viruses. It's simply not safe, and it's also breaking the law.

GIMP is produced in a legal portable version - you can get it here: http://www.partha.com/ - although it is not the official GIMP site.

Are there external hard drives in the 150 GB range that do not require a power cord?

Q. I am looking for small & inexpensive external hard drives to share a 120 GB video file. It has to be able to work on a Mac or PC.

The smallest I could find was about 250 GB for $45, but if there is something smaller and less expensive, do tell! (I need several to be able to share the 110 GB short film with a number of users.)

is it possible to give an external hard drive media player function?

Lynda G

So I have a 1TB hard drive its prob one of the first models as it is quiet big and requires its own power supply to run :'(

So is it possible to give it media player functions?
As it is a pain to hook it up to the laptop and then the lappy to the tv in order to watch stuff.

Thanks :)

Answer
Hi..

Here is a cheap media player for you , but it connects direct to the TV...
No need for the laptop go between..
As your external hard drive is not a portable one (USB powered) will still need to hook it up to a power supply.

Compatible with hard drives up to 1.5TB ...
Just use the usb cable you normally use to connect the drive to your laptop...
