Do UK customs search external hard drive?

I will be leaving in October from the US for a one year Master's degree program in the UK (flying into Leeds/Bradford). I will be bringing my macbook and an external hard drive with me carry on. I have been reading that some people get their laptops and external hard drives searched by UK customs. Is that true?

Anything you carry across borders can be checked/searched by customs if they have a reason to suspect you are carrying illegal content.

Child Porn and other prohibited material can easily be smuggled across boarders so they can conduct a search if they want. It is highly unlikely they would though .

I'm overwhelmed with all the external hard drives there are out there. I did a lot of research too. I found a few external hard drives that looked pretty good, and I want to know which one is the best in your opinion.

Western digital and seagate are both excellent. Have had a 320gb western digital drive for the last three years and it still runs perfectly.

There is another kind of hard drive that works as a normal external hard drive should but can also connect to your tv via scart . That means, you can download your programs/movies on the pc and then watch them on your tv in comfort. I plan on getting one in the near future.

I want to buy an external hard drive when im in the states (im from UK) but I cant really think of any stores that sell computer stuff? Do you guys have PC World over there?

You can buy an external Hard drive just about anywhere computers are sold. Try stores such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot. Places like Best Buy that specialize in computer sales will have a better variety than standard retailers like Wal-Mart. I believe that all these stores have websites so look at them before you come so you know where to get your drive. Some even allow you to buy online and have it shipped to the store of your choice (called Site to Store by Wal-Mart).

Does anyone know how to get your external hard drive to be compatible with the PS3?

Follow these steps exactly,

At Step 2, it talks about NTFS. If your drive is NTFS, you will probably want to copy all of your songs and pictures to your PC before deleting the partition. That will erase everything.
If your drive is already FAT32, skip to Step 7. You just need to add the appropriate folders to make the PS3 automatically add them to the XMB. If you don't have those folders, they won't show up but you should still be able to hit triangle and 'select all' to see the files.

If you do need to reformat, I would actually recommend fat32format ,
