What is the best external hard drive?

I want to buy an external hard drive. My main concern is reliability and size.

I have found 3 that i like, and need help choosing between the 3. Other recommendations are welcomed. I want one that is durable and reliable.

Reliability would mean a raid 0 external.

Basically raid 0 means if one drive dies, the other will still be there.

The maxtor externals (1tb) can be configured for raid 0 (750gb) and use the fast firewire 400 interface or usb 2.0.

I have had my Hard drive for about a year now and now it is not being recognized. when i plug it in the light blinks instead of being steady. the internal fan for the drive does not kick in. there are no sound effects on the pc when it is plugged in or unplugged. It is like it was never plugged in when it actually is. How can i correct this without formatting it and losing my data?
It is plugged into my desktop.

Okay my first response question is. Does this Portable HDD come with a Power Supply?
If it does not then the issue is simply that. It gets it's power supply through the USB cable and since this is a portable hdd I am assuming you have a laptop. The laptop in order to read the drive needs to have a Powered USB Port. It is just not getting enough power from the USB port it is connected to.
The tech specs even say that it needs to be powered through the USB.

That's two Hitachi 2.5" hard drives vs. one WD. 2.5" hard drive.

For speed, choose the first due to the Firewire connectivity. For reliability, choose the WD. For a cheaper price, choose the 3rd. Don't be enticed by the 'formatted for Mac' and 'Time Machine-ready' crap. They all are. So what does that tell you? It's the WD unless you are particular about the Firewire feature.

However, if it were my money, I would future-proof my investment on a USB 3.0 external hard drive like this:

Okay so I am always running out of space on my Macbook Pro (160gb). I have lots of music/movies/pictures saved on it and I want a place to store it all. At first i was using USBs to store files but I'm beginning to wonder if I should just get an external hard drive.

Go with a really good flash drive. my only problem with external hds are the physical limitations of the speed. The speed mainly depends on the rpm of the motor inside. If you can afford an EXTREMELY high rpm, go for it, but there are flash drives with terabyte space now (1000 GBS!)

I am looking into buying a portable hard drive. I study Graphic Design at college and a Hard drive would be useful. I currently have a USB which is only 4GB which I feel won't be enough.

I have some factors to consider

Reliability: Fast and easy to use and doesn't experience regular problems.

Portability: Easy to travel with.

Durability/Lasting factor: Doesn't brake easily and lasts for a long time

Memory: As I said before preferably a 1TB (3.0 USB hard drive)

Price: I am looking around the price of Â£50-Â£100 for an external hard drive.

I have had so many mixed reviews on external hard drives I'm finding it difficult to make a firm decision. All Answers will be appreciated but the best answer will be the one that best fits my criteria :D

iomega is very reliable. it also has a warranty that comes with it (every external hard drive does).

Many students at my school get WD (Western Digital) because it's cheaper, but many of them had issue with it (it's not connecting, it crashes easily, etc. etc.)

Iomega works well. It doesn't overheat like some of Seagate does.

Seagate overheats and not many student use it.

G (sold at Mac stores) have pretty good ratings. But I don't know of many people who have this, and not many ratings online (last time I checked).

Online at tech forums, people rate and crit which external hard drives works best and is most reliable. You can also check Best Buy and compare each hard drive with one another. You should also go into the hard drive company's website/forums which will most likely have buyer's ratings. You should check those.

When I did that, Iomega had best ratings. It also runs on Firewire, which is far faster than regular USB which most hard drives still rely on. When you work with large files, it's best to have firewire. Saves you time.

Now for the questions:

1) Will all these parts fit into the case and will they all work with each other? As in, will I not have a problem with anything and just have to put everything together and it should work?

2) Will that power supply give enough power to everything? I am not a computer expert, in fact I'm only 13. So knowing a little about wattage and stuff, will that power supply work with everything?

3) Will that graphics card do well with the games of today and years into the future? As in will I not have to upgrade in a couple of years or do I?

4) Will I be able to play most games on max graphics? How about these games: Arma 2(Mostly Dayz), all the Valve games, Call of Duty series, Fallout series, Grand Theft Auto series, Crysis series, Battlefield 3, and Diablo 3? Pretty much a lot of the popular games today and on Steam.

5) Will I be able to upgrade later on? As in when the games start getting bigger and more advance to where my computer can't handle it, will I be able to replace and add more advance tech.

If you are building this computer to game, dont get an AMD processor. The best gaming cpu is the i5 3570k, which is the same price. You can get the same brand of motherboard, the Gigabyte ga-z77x-ud3h, it is compatable with the intel i5.

You dont need 16gb of ram either, i would be suprised if you managed to use more than 4gb. 8gb is pretty standard now and is more than enough for a while. Your hard drive is external, you need an internal hard drive, such as this one.

That power supply is fine but i would get something semi modular because your graphics card requires power connections, but 600w is fine.

Your case and cpu cooler are fine. Lastly, the graphics card, the radeon 6850 is getting old, it is for budget systems. If you have a 1920x1080 resolution monitor, you will want a better graphics card, a gtx 670 or radeon 7950. If your monitor is around 1600x900, then a gtx 660ti or radeon 7870 will be able to max out those games.

Macbook Pro - How do you use an external hard drive?

Hi all, I just recently purchased a Macbook Pro.

Tech Spechs: 15 Inch, 2.66GHz, and 128 GB SSD.

I upgraded the hard drive from 500GB to 128GB. I know that's less space, but it has a solid state drive which I really wanted.

but I'm not 100% sure of what I can do with it. Could I just upload my iTunes and everything to it? Because my library is fairly big, and I need to install other programs on here, etc.

I was wondering if I can use the hard drive for Time Machine and additionally store files on it? I know that Time Machine basically backs everything up. So I want that on there, but I also want to be able to install programs on the hard drive. Like install Microsoft Office for Mac on the external, put my iTunes library on there, etc so it would only be on the computer if the external hard drive was connected. Can it do two things like that at once? Time Machine, and store non-backup files on it?

Bassman above is correct. and you do not need a Time Capsule to use time Machine just another hard drive. I currently have my itunes library split onto TWO external harddrives because I ran out of room years ago. It does work. Good Luck!
