best external hard drive pc image
Nate
I wanted to know if the transfer speed depended on the external hard drive, my pc, or the cable it uses to transfer the files?
Answer
it's the cables, with external hard drives there's two types of cables you can use, sata or usb. sata delivers and receives information alot faster, but you can only use sata cables if your computer tower has external sata capabilities. and there's more, with hard drives there's more than just cables you got the rpm speed, and the buffer memory (cache) with with the buffer memory the higher the number the better, to give you a good idea of what it does, say my hard drive has a 32mb cache with means it will receive and deliver information faster, like opening a program will be a breeze, selecting the start button will pop up in less then a blink of an eye. so if you haven't bought a hard drive just yet keep in mind when your shopping for one that it has sata cables, a good rpm speed, and anywhere between 16 to 32mb of memory buffer aka cache.

How can I make my external hard drive show up on My Computer?
Evan
When I plug in my external hard drive, my pc detects it, but my I go to My Computer it doesn't show up.
How can I fix this
its an external hard drive and when I plug it in it doesn't show up at all
Answer
Have you tried assigning it a drive letter in the disk management console? Right click on my computer, click manage. Click disk management. Find your drive, right click it, and click assign drive letter. If it is not already, it will need to be formatted/partitioned, which you can do from the Disk Management Console
