I have a Hitachi 500BG XL500 portable hard drive, and have just sold it to someone. How can i remove all the files and pics i have stored on it before i post it to him?
Answer
Formatting it twice will **NOT** delete it completely and there are software tools available which you can use to recover it.
Try this free open source tool : http://www.dban.org/
I've used it on client sites for wiping out hard drives and data destruction.
Hope that helps.

Which company makes the best portable hard drives?
$$ !
Someone told me that portable hard drives have a short-life. Is it true/ If yes, what's the durability?
Answer
I'd go with Western Digital. But there are some highly rated drives at http://www.newegg.com Some of these are assembled with a different name on them, and who knows what drive is inside. If I had the choice, I'd go with Hitachi, the former IBM Datastar. I'd never buy a Maxtor drive. (again)
Try this one at NewEgg
Western Digital My Book Essential WDG1U1600N 160GB 7200 RPM USB 2.0 External Hard Drive - $79.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136021
or this one
Western Digital Passport Portable WDXMS2500TN 250GB 5400 RPM USB 2.0 External Hard Drive - $144.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136139
But here is the thing, one bump and you are dead. Consider carrying that drive in a special foam filled bag. Always put that drive on the floor of your car, so it does not get destroyed when it slips off the seat of your car and HITS the floor.
Maybe you should be getting several 4GB Flash (Thumb) drives. BUY one at first, and make sure that it works in every computer that you want it to work with. Then buy more of the same brand.
How about this from NewEgg:
CORSAIR 16GB Flash Survivor Ultra Rugged USB 2.0 Drive Model CMFUSBSRVR-16GB â $154.99
