How can I safely wipe a portable hard drive without infecting my computer? A few weeks ago, I got a virus on my desktop and one thing led to another. Finally I figured out that it was on my portable hard drive (one of those you plug in using a usb cord.) How can I safely wipe the hard drive clean without infecting my system because whenever I connect the hard drive, I get a virus.
Answer
This anti-virus program should detect the virus and catch it just before it infects your computer:

Also I do recommend scanning both your system and portable drive when you are done. There maybe another type of infection on your pc such as spyware/adware I would recommend this program to deal with these threats:

can my portable hard drive get a virus?
1
i have just bought a Western Digital portable hard drive to back up all of my data from my laptop as it is becoming slow, has a few viruses i can't get rid of and i have no copy of my files.
I havent yet plugged in my portable hard drive and i was wondering can they get viruses and if so, how do i prevent this from happening. i have tried to get rid of all viruses but im pretty sure i still have some on here? thanks
Answer
It is technically possible, so always be careful of course, but most current viruses don't bother spreading that way right now. Spreading via emails and phishing is whats in fashion at the moment.
