Yes, a portable eSATA hard drive should work however, when you connect it, you will lose your internal hard drive. You also have to reboot the receiver with the new hard drive connected, for it to recognize the new drive.

What should I look for in a portable external hard drive?
Stephanie
I'm kind of new to the external hard drive world. I'm looking for something that I can back up my less used files onto, and my huge music collection on. I'm heading off to college in about a month and I need my computer for school and I have like half of my available space used up already, so obviously I need to back some of that stuff up so I can use my computer for more important things.
First of all what is a good brand? I've been shopping around and I found brands like Western Digital and Seagate. I have never heard of these brands so I have no clue.
What can you recommend to me? I'm looking for something that has around 1TB on it so I can be sure that I have enough space.
Thanks again, I am completely lost when it comes to this stuff.

I suggest you go to the link below and look at some external hard drives. If you don't know much about this kind of thing then you can look at the reviews for any drive you are interested in.
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=414&name=External-Hard-Drives&Order=RATING
After choosing a few possibles, I would recommend looking them up on other sites to see more reviews. (you can try tigerdirect.com, amazon.com, etc.)
Also, if you want first hand suggestion, I own a Fantom G-Force 1TB external drive (USB 2.0 & eSATA interface). I've had it for about 4 months now and it works fine.
