I am looking for a Portable External Hard Drive for my HP laptop. I need one that has at least 2tb of memory and is fast but affordable (preferably under $150) I'm looking for a good reliable brand too. I just don't know where to start. If it helps any I have Windows 7.

I have a 2.5 and a 3.0 TB for my two laptops from Western Digital and they have worked flawlessly. One of my laptops is Windows 7 and one is Windows 8. I don't work for Amazon (retired postal service) but I really like Amazon for deals. Check them out and do some searching. I think you will find what you need.

I recently had rain checked a "Western Digital 120gb 2.5" Passport Portable" hard drive from Best Buy. I got on the internet and read some user reviews and found them to be quite horrible though. I want one that can handle both laptops and desktops and that will last for a long time and is quite durable. I do not have a lot of knowledge on portable HDD's Any help will be very appreciated. I have found that the big names work best, ie. Seagate, Western Digital etc. However, if you are looking for a good deal and a site that generally has reviews by mostly informed consumers, try buy.com. Here is a link to some results that you may find to optimal:

Can i the MS-DOS startup files onto a portable hard drive when i format my computers drive?

I have windows XP home edition. I'm formatting my hard drive. but i dont have a floppy. and my disc drive can't write onto discs. I need to format my computers hard drive, but i don't want to turn it back on and not have any files to boot off of. ....... This is a horrible explanation. but if you understand this. can you tell me how to get my MS-DOS files for windows XP onto an external drive while i format my computers hard drive.

There are no DOS files for Windows XP. If you're talking about system startup files then 1) you can't copy any that are currently in use i.e. while booted from them and 2) copying them to an external drive won't necessarily help anything. If you're talking about backing up personal files then just copy them straight over to the external drive, boot from your XP install CD when your done, and proceed with a reformat and reinstall.

If you're wanting to back up ALL data on the drive so you can restore it after a reformat, then you largely defeat the point of reformatting except where you're dealing with a collapsing FAT32 file system.

If none of that makes sense or if I seem to be coming out of nowhere then try to add some more detail to help clarify what you would like to do.
