Difference between an external expension and portable hard drive?

I need a 1TB external hard drive but I keep seeing expansion and portable external hard drives. What's the difference? Or are they the same thing. I just need it for my music. Would this be good for what I need? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178245

I think two Solid State hard drives that are 512gb each, that would give you pretty much what you are looking for, they aren't cheap though, in Canada that would run about $450.00 each, you can get a 1T solid state drive for about $900.00, which to me is quite prohibitive, and you need a Thunderbolt port for that one.. I would think you will pay much less for a 1T hard drive disc, it certainly wont cost even close to what solid state are, if you don't need a really fast speed you can get a range of normal plug in hard drives for not too much money...You didn't say if you had a desktop or laptop...

Beyond the fact that if you external hard drive was the size of a house it wouldn't be portable? Are there any other differences? Also after I back up my data can I just leave them unplugged and powered down? Or is there some reason they would constantly need power?

They do the same thing, essentially. Most "portable" hard drives use a 2.5" hard drive, the same sized drive that comes in a laptop for example. External hard drives usually use 3.5" drives, hence the difference in size.

You can also build your own external drive by purchasing a drive and then a cage for the drive. If you were to do this eSATA is your best bet, provided your computer has an eSATA port of course.

It would be better if you had it installed locally as you are going to be limited by your USB bus speed.

Do you mean 2GB of memory or 2GB of harddrive space on yoru laptop? 2GB of memory will be fine, it would help with more but you can stull run those programs on 2GB.

Is it advisable to use Portable Hard Drive for our company server? and can it be done?

It's a small business and we use a business management software for our operations (accounting, billing, operation, and etc). Question is, can I use an external portable hard drive for the server?
I understand normally there are hard drives specifically for server that is designed to operate 24/7, but sometimes we need to take it out.

Yes, but your RAID software needs to be able to find it if you want to mirror it.
The only reason to use a portable drive is if you need to transport data, not store it.
You can usb a USB flash memory stick to do that.
Not worth losing data from one drive only regardless if it is portable or not.

they are the exact same but some people don't know the right word
but portable hard drives are pocket sizes kinda like a flash drive but a bit bigger and external hard drive is more of an at home one you plug into the wall. id go with the external 500gb for 80 rather than 160 for 110 500 is allot more and more useful my opinion.
