portable external hard drive?

Adam

i am planning on buying this portable hard drive.
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?name=st905004exa101-rk-expansion-portable-usb-500gb-hd&vgnextoid=f54a4d13af3df110VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD&locale=en-US

i am wondering if it will survive being jostled around in by back pack or not. (it will be off of course) or should i invest in a LaCie "Rugged" hard drive??? (still portable, but designed to take a beating)

Does an External/Portable Hard Disk is faster than a USB Flash Drive?

gethzkie

I have a huge collection of movies at least they are in DVD quality, but my laptop hard disk is getting full so i want to backup or transfer my collections, is it true that an External USB Hard Disk is faster than a USB Flash Drive? in generally...

Answer
yes
If you look at simple stats on buffer to platter transfer rates on hard drives, a typical rate is 780Mbs, and for USB its 480Mbs.

in some testing parameters there might be no diff between both. But yes i think you should go with the external hdd cause even the tranfer rate's are more than usb 2.0
& whether it is usb 2.0 or 3.0 you also get firewire ports in some hard disks and i dnt think usb 3.0 could even compare with it
and ya 1 more thing you need whole new set of pc for usb 3.0
cause the old 2.0 pc do not support usb 3.0

What is the best recommended portable external hard drive on the market?

I'd done some looking around on Newegg, Bestbuy, and Amazon for prices on portable external hard drives. The prices look affordable, but the customer reviews put me on edge. Some had said the hard drives (specifically the Seagate Ultra Portable 1 terabyte drive) caused their computer to crash with Windows 7. Others found the (Seagate) drives were poorly constructed and were useless in three months. What are some great drives for the prices these days?

Answer
WD(western digital) is usually good and there passports are good also. The 500gb here http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Passport-Essential-Portable/dp/B0041OSAZS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1306477962&sr=8-3

Or a 1tb http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Passport-Essential-Portable/dp/B0041OSQ9S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1306477962&sr=8-1. They are also usb 3.0 and 2.0

What is the best portable 1TB hard drive?

I need a 1TB hard drive just to back up my files (mainly movies and TV shows). I was looking into the Clickfree C6 portable hard drive but the reviews weren't great. Which hard drive have you used in the past or recently that you think is the best? Thanks!

Honestly to make this easy, here are some steps you can follow, since I believe this to be the better of the 3 mainstream external 2.5" drives (Toshiba, Western Digital, and Seagate).

1. Why bother with the software in the first place?? just reformat the drive, or delete the software. Sure it is a bit annoying having 40 gigabytes taking up space right out the box, but is that really the only main source of concerns for this drive?

2. Now for the USB cord. out of the multitude of variations of 1tb usb 3.0 drives I have run and tested, every manufactuer has just about the same length of cord. If you want a longer cord, and or are wondering how you are going to power this drive other than with the supplied USB, then why are you buying this particular external HDD? this model is not for you if you are NOT an on the go type of person. what I mean by that is, if you do not lug your external drive around, why dont you go buy a powered 3.5" external HDD model for the same price as you would this one and have twice the space?

3. As far as the construction of the drive goes it is solid. I have tested the Toshiba 1TB 3.0 as well as the Western Digital 1TB 3.0, and my opinion is that Toshiba and Western Digital were too concerned about how slim and compact they could make the case of their external HDD, which has resulted in may more failures of those particular brands than I have seen from Seagate. Small shocks, such as light drops and accedental shock is a killer for the Western Digital as well as the Toshiba more than the Seagate models I have seen. Yes I know that there are about 3 or more warning labels stating the these drives should never be hit, moved, droped, abused, etc... but If it WERE to happen I have noticed that the Seagate construction has had a better chance from failing due to these certain cercumstances than the other brands I have tested and seen.

4. If there is any con's about this drive I will say that I am not a fan of the two piece adapter. they should have included their USB 3.0 "Upgrade" cable with this drive and not the two piece unit that is currently supplied with it, as the upgrade cable is also a few inches longer and one solid piece. The two pieces I am referring to are the adapter that plugs into the drive itself and the USB 3.0 cable that goes from that adapter to your USB device.

5. Im not here to bag on any one company, and or promote Seagate as the best of the best when it somes to drives in general. I am just stating overall that if you are looking for a 1TB 3.0 USB 2.5" drive, then this is what you are looking for. I just thought I would post this up as I keep seeing negative reviews on this drive just because of a bloatware issue not a material type defect. hope this helps! If not im sorry for wasting you time.

How to find Dell external hard drive service tag?

best portable hard drive 3.0 usb image

Konan

I have recently bought a Dell 1 TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0 and according to the legal documentation attached I have 2 year warranty on it. My Dell XPS 15 L502X Laptop no longer has warranty.

My hard drive is currently having problems and in order to get technical support from Dell I need to enter it's service tag or express service code but I can't find either of those anywhere on the hard drive itself, the box or on any of the papers that came with it. It's from the official website.

How do I find out what my express service code or service tag is? If I can't, how do I get technical support from Dell without paying for it? I have warranty on this hard drive so I shouldn't have to pay or go out of my way to resolve this issue.

Answer
Hi Konan,

We regret the inconvenience caused to you. As you mentioned that the external hard drive is brand new and is not working, please click http://dell.to/UrR94G and update the driver for USB 3.0

Also, I would suggest you to connect the hard drive in a different USB port of your XPS 15 laptop. Also, try connecting the same in a different system if possible as it would be a good way to isolate the issue. If the hard drive works fine in a different computer, then the issue is with your laptop.

When you call tech support, the IVR prompts you to enter the service tag of your Dell product. As the external hard drive does not have a Service Tag or Express service code, you can enter the Service Tag of your Dell computer itself. The link mentioned below would give you details on where to locate the service tag on a Dell product.

http://dell.to/W8V8DA

If you would like me to assist you in this regard, please email me your computerâs Service tag at v_saini@dell.com

Do mentioned your name as it appears on the account so that I can check your system details and help you in the best possible manner.

However, if you would like to call Technical support, you can enter your computerâs Service Tag in the IVR and when you speak to the representative, let them know about the issue you are facing with the external hard drive. They would ask you to provide the order number for the external hard drive which you would have received in an order confirmation email at the time of purchase.

Thanks & Regards
Vishal S

Will this external hard drive work for both Macs and PCs? Is it a good choice for a graphic designer?

WD My Passport 2TB Portable External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0 is the one I am considering buying.

Answer
Yes. You will need to use the FAT 32 format so it can be used by both systems....
