i need a good portable hard drive?

MadPanda

Ive found a couple but I need one that I can unplug and still have it save. My friend bought one and saved everything to it but when he unplugged it none of his stuff was on it. I would get a flash drive but the 500gb+ cost more than the terabyte hard drives
500Gb or above.

Answer
ALL external hard drives save the data stored on them when they are subsequently unplugged.

I would regard your reference to your friends experience as a suggestion about HIS lack of competence.
(Basically he didn't copy his files where he thought he did.)

If you need a portable hard drive I suggest you stick to either Western Digital or Seagate

And never drop it hard drives are good until they are dropped ONCE.

Ive seen an external hard drive fail because it was dropped ONCE and it
only fell about 2", it was resting on top of a book and the user brushed their
sleeve against the cord and pulled it from it's position... it never worked again afterwards.

They will withstand a bit more if they are not spinning, but not much more.

Portable External Hard Drive?

Relocated.

Help me find one, for my needs, please?

Requirements:
Bare minimum hard drive - 500gb. 1TB would be better, but mehh.
Size: relatively small, not extremely heavy or bulky. In other words, portable.
Password protection option.
Relatively fast transfer rate. I do not want to be waiting six hours for a few gb to transfer.
Easy to use, something like drag-and-drop or similar
Back-up software, so I can copy my harddrive contents to it in case of computer crashing emergency.
USB 2.0 powered only, since I don't want to plug into the wall and I don't have a firewire slot.
Price range - up to $150.

I was thinking a Toshiba one, since it might be best compatible with my Toshiba laptop?

Answer
Do you have a Best Buy or similar type of computer store where you can go look at them?

I would recommend looking at them in a store, and being able to talk to a knowledgeable sales person.
They would be better able to help you.
There is so many kinds / styles available, I would want to look at them all, and read the specifications on the box of the hard drive.

As for the back up- if you have much really important stuff on your computer, I would go with an
on-line back up, such as Carbonite.
I have a Carbonite back-up for mine, and it is great!!! It backs up my stuff automatically, every day.
An external hard drive for back up is good, but it still is a hard drive, and thus subject to crashing just like the internal hard drive in your computer.
Chances are slim, but you never know!

Good luck in your searching, and I hope you find a good one that does what you want it to do.....

I am looking for a portable external hard drive that is between 500GB and 1TB (depends on the price). I plan on storing pictures and music along with some document and possibly back up my laptop as well. I want to know what are the best brands and models for what I need. I think I have narrowed it down to Seagate and Western Digital.

Answer
You can't install VMWare fusion to a portable hard drive, but you can make a virtual machine on the hard drive. Install VMWare fusion normally. Then, when you go to make the new virtual machine, make the virtual hard drive somewhere on the external.

I am looking for a 500GB or more external portable hard drive. I want it to be powered by a USB cable instead of an external power source. Also i dont want to spend a lot on one, but i will spend the extra money to get the better product.

Here is a pretty good one: 500GB/USB 2.0 Powered/$120

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8475063&type=product&id=1185271084002
This one is also good and reliable with 500GB, but uses an AC Adapter Power Source, it is cheaper though $95

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9318142&type=product&id=1218084031027
This one has a faster data transfer rate and is a little smaller than both above, however it is $130

You can find more harddrives on bestbuy.com or newegg.com
