What is with my external hard drive?

Israel Jon

This is the hard drive I got for christmas.

http://www.amazon.com/BUFFALO-MiniStation-Stealth-Portable-Drive/dp/B00822GHEQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1356543269&sr=8-2&keywords=ministation+stealth

When I plugged it in to my laptop, after a while, it said it was installed and ready to use. When I go to "my computer", it isn't there, but it is in my "devices and printers". It's like a ghost. My computer says it's there, but I can't get to it. One of the reasons I wanted it was because it was "plug and play".

I tried to find a solution. Some said I had to format it, but I can't format it because it doesn't show up in "my computer". I really need this hard drive to work. I need the extra space. Any help at all is appreciated.

Answer
drivers maybe properly installed.. if your external hard drive is brand new.. you should return it for replacement, since I expect warranty is still intact.

on the otherhand, if your external drive is about 6months old or more, could be that your USB port does not read your hard drive properly. or your external hard drive usb wire is not working properly. try using another wire to your usb port. also, you can try plugging it in another usb port.

if it shows your hard drive on devices and printer, it means, that the driver was installed properly.

if all else fails, maybe your external hard drive is dying.

Can I Connect my external hard drive to my wifi router?

portable hard drive buffalo on Buffalo Juststore 500GB USB 2.0 Slimline Portable External Hard Drive ...
portable hard drive buffalo image
Q. I just bought a portable Toshiba external hard drive that i connect to my laptop via USB cable. I noticed that my wifi router had a jack titled USB. So i was wondering if i could somehow hook my hard drive to that and just stream the data to my laptop, and if possible, watch the movies on it on my iDevices. Is it possible?

Answer
Read your router documentation to see if it is possible and if there are restrictions. On routers the USB port may be useless, only usable to share a printer, or can be used for several functions.

As already stated, the Apple Time Capsule (and Apple Airport Extreme) support external USB drives, though it can be limited. A drive configured for Time Machine backups is not very usable for other purposes, and a drive in a Windows format cannot be used for Time Machine backups.

Some Belkin, Buffalo, D-Link, Linksys, and Netgear products in recent years support external USB hard drives. The partitions, formats of use of these drives may be limited. Some Buffalo and D-link routers require each PC to install driver software provided from the manufacturer to access the external USB hard drive, and the driver software may be not be available for all operating systems.

Sharing a Portable Hard Drive over a network?

Q. I have recently purchased a Buffalo Portable hard drive to use for backing-up my Desktop PC & Laptop.
I have the drive connected via USB to my desktop and have file sharing enabled, However when I try to access the drive from my Laptop via my wireless network I get the message:

"Not enough server storage available to process this command"

My Desktop is running XP Pro and my Laptop Vista Home Premium.

Answer
Here is the solution from Microsoft.
