what's a good portable hard drive for an apple laptop?

brendan y.

i want a portable hard drive to store the thousands of photos i have sitting on my computer.

Answer
any Segate, or Western Digital will be good, make sure you have higher Gigbyte storage.
most are plug and play with USB.
You can use a 3 GB or larger Flash Drive too or store on CD or DVD's

I have a 1tb western digital portable hard drive that wont let me copy or add anything from it only view it!!?

rich.96

I have a 1tb western digital portable hard drive that i have been using since december 2011 that was formatted originally to windows but 3 months a go i reformatted it with the help of APPLE to exFAT so it can work with my mac and windows.
BUT a few days a go it all the sudden stopped working!
when i plug my hard drive to my mac and tried opening it it wont let me at all my mac jumps to the desk top
BUT when i plug the hard drive to my windows laptop it lets me view my files and everything but i cant copy them off or add any files..

i know i can reformat it and it will work again but i cant loose the files on it because most of them are very important to me apart from my movies.

PLEASE HELP!

Answer
Because it sounds like both operating systems are unable to properly use the drive, I would guess you have a corrupted structure. The only surefire way to fix this is to reformat (and make sure you are ejecting the drive before removing it). One thing to try would be to see if a Linux computer could read and write to the drive - at least then you could copy the contents somewhere else so you could format the drive. You could install Ubuntu LInux for free through Windows using the Wubi installer (link below).

How can i get the music off of an iphone to a nw computer?

portable hard drive for apple on ... Portable External Hard Drive Metallic Red - Mac External Hard Drives
portable hard drive for apple image

Austin

I recently got a new laptop because my desktop broke and i had most of my music backed up to a portable hard drive, but i have music that i purchased on my iphone that isnt there yet. When i go to sync the iphone it says that it is synced with another library and asks to erase it. I have tried programs that allow you to view the music but it only appears when you look from the iphone. Help?

Answer
If the music was purchased through iTunes, you're in luck.

Connect your iPhone, and in iTunes go to the File menu, and choose "Transfer purchases from 'iPhone'". iTunes will check your phone for any music that was purchased with your iTunes account and will copy it back to your computer without any trouble.

The other problem, though, is with music that was not purchased through iTunes. Since your old machine is not available, many of the tricks out there won't work, since they involve you getting a file out of your old iTunes library and editing it on your new computer.

So your only option there really is to try some of the different programs that say they will help you get the music from your phone, and get it copied to your machine. Then, you can tell iTunes to sync the music, which will delete the music off the phone and then put it back on with what you copied.

Yeah... it's a huge pain. Apple really didn't make it easy to shuffle music collections between different computers. If you can live without syncing the music, you can just tell it not to sync that and it will still sync your other data, such as contacts, mail settings, and backups. But music and applications both involve it erasing the current library on the phone and re-copying a new one in order for the new computer to manage the phone properly.

As far as apps to retrieve the music from the phone, try these links out:

Does anyone know a portable wireless hard drive that I can use to stream to my iPod?

Jonathan Q

I'm looking for an external hard drive that i can upload my media too, so that I can stream my media from my iPod. I know that there are a bunch that have built in WiFi to enable streaming. What brands are good, and which brands should I avoid? Also, is my media backed up online, or is it only saved locally?

installing logic pro 9 onto a portable hard drive instead of my macs hard drive?

portable hard drive for apple image

Nik

ok, i really want to buy Logic Pro 9 for my mac to do recording and such, but i know i dont have enough memory on my mac to instal it because i only have the 64GB mac. if there anyway to instal Logic Pro 9 onto my 500GB portable hard drive instead of my macs hard drive? i dont want to spend $200.00 and then realize i cant install it.

Answer
Logic Pro 9 comes with huge collections of libraries, which means program itself isn't that big; around 1 GB or less.

Other than that you can pretty much install on an external drive if you have any.
If you still don't own please make sure you buy one with:

SATA or eSata port - if your Mac supports those connection or you have enough money to get PCI cards for the port. Second choice would be Firewire 800 then USB2. and it also depends on what kind of audio interface you are using.

7200RPM or more; no 5400RPM
which means 2.5 is not recommended - it limits number of the samples you can play simultaneously.
but if you think you won't max out the spec you can go for it.

plan accordingly

How can I watch movies stored on my external portable hard drive on TV?

Undecided

I've a lot of movies on my 1T external WD hard drive. How can I connect and watch it on my plasma TV? What EXACTLY do I need to buy? The more specifics the better coz i'm not very savvy when it comes to computer tech. Thanks for your help.
Can I watch without connecting the hard drive to a desk/laptop?

Answer
I strongly recommend the Western Digital HD Live Plus. Not only will you be able to watch your movies on your harddrive, but you will have access to Hulu, Netflix (you need to hack it), etc. It supports almost all formats including DivX, XVid, MKVs, etc etc.

Comes with a remote.

You can get a little usb wifi thing to stream from your desktop/watch hulu/etc. It has a ethernet port as well. It's an awesome little product. Actually, I'm not sure if you can stream from your desktop, but I'm pretty sure you can.

It's $90 on newegg, but you can find deals for around $70ish. Also, I've seen refurbished ones go for $50-60ish.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?SID=u55977t3162022f9fp0dd0c0s701&AID=10440897&PID=1225267&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-cables-_-na-_-na&Item=N82E16822136593

If the price is steep, then you can opt for the non-plus version, which is like $20 less but doesn't have the hulu option/internet option.

Other options include using a PS3 (if you already have one) but they only support avi formats and not mkv, divx support is shaky, and I think there's a 2GB filesize max.

HTPC.

Connecting the external hard drive to your laptop and connecting your laptop to your TV. Can work for your desktop as well.

HTPC is the real way to go imo though. They haven't picked up yet, but you can build one for around $300ish and it's an actual computer attached to your TV. A lot of versatility there. In about 2-3 years I'm pretty sure there will be a few popping out on the main stream. Apple TV and Google TV are RETARDED. Ugh, stupid licensing issues (Apple's fault) make them both stupid options. It's too restricted.

Will any portable hard drive work for an Apple computer or do I need to specifically buy an Apple product?

thmtom

My wife just got a Mac-book (or some apple computer of shorts). It is the first apple base computer in our family. Being I'm a Microsoft guy (I have not converted yet), I'm clueless about Macs. I want to buy my wife a portable hard drive for her birthday (and she has been asking for one). Will any portable hard drive work for an Apple or do I need to specifically buy an Apple product?

Answer
If you were to go to an Apple retail store, you'd see that none of the portable hard drives are Apple-branded. Apple doesn't make its own hard disks, not even the ones in their Time Machine backup product.

If you get something from Seagate, Toshiba or Western Digital you should be fine. Those are all big players in the storage market and I've used drives from all those manufacturers successfully with a Mac running OS X.
