External Harddrive for Macs?

idunnoimas

i was just wondering if you could buy external hard drives for mac laptops. Sata, Ide, whatever. Also anything else that is necessary if you get a external hard drive.

thnx

:)

:)

Answer
Most Macs have both a USB and Firewire, and there are a few external hard drives that can connect with Firewire, but most external hard drives use the USB.

An external hard drive is generally a hard drive that has a power supply that requires connection to a wall socket.

A portable hard drive is generally a hard drive that gets its power from the USB port or the Firewire port, so it does not need a connection to the wall socket.

Typical minimum price for either is about $70, any lower and they are on clearance sale.

==========

These two companies are the largest manufacturers of hard drives and they both make external hard drives and portable hard drives.

Western Digital
Seagate and its subsidiary Maxtor

Other manufacturers of external and portable hard drives include Iomega, SimpleTech, Verbatim.

These are sold by Best Buy, Frys, Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, Target, Wal-Mart.

Go to http://www.frys.com

At the top, click the tab "Hard Drives/Memory"

At the side, click category "Hard Drives"

You will now have a page-full of hard drives advertised

At the side, click category "External Hard Drives"

At the side, click category "Firewire" or "USB" or "USB-Firewire"

==========

If you have a regular internal hard drive you want to make into an external hard drive you can buy a "hard drive enclosure" which will have a USB adapter built-in but will be IDE only or SATA only, or you can buy a plain USB-to-hard drive adapter which supports IDE or SATA.

Go to http://www.frys.com

At the top, find the search box and type

drive enclosure

Select :

Entire Site

and click GO

==========

For USB-to-SATA docking stations :

Go to http://www.frys.com

At the top, find the search box and type

Drive docking station

Select :

Entire site

and click GO

external/portable hard drive help?

What's a good portable hard drive that's below $500. I know it's a little vague but I'm not an expert with computer hardware. Also would it be a bad idea to run my games from them? Would that shorten it's lifespan anymore than it would if I just used it for storage.

Answer
I have a Western Digital My Book. I really love it. It's a 1TB it cost about 124 bucks. That was from Dell. You can probably get it cheaper at Office Depot, or Best Buy.

How could I organize my bills, important papers and receipts in the best way?

I want to organize my papers in the best way to reduce clutter and where I can easily find things. What should I do?

Answer
Get a small filing cabinet or portable filing box. You can find a variety of filing supplies at Staples, Office Depot and other stores.

Also purchase a supply of file folders and hanging files.

Write a name on each file folder and place the papers related to that name in each folder. For example, create files for your checking account statements, credit card statements, and utility statements. If you receive these in electronic form, save the files to a thumb drive in separate folders. NEVER save electronic files containing sensitive information to your computer's hard drive. Your personal identifying information can be compromised by a computer virus or worm.

You should have separate files for things like tax records, major purchases, banking accounts, Social Security statements, etc.

What is a good laptop for online gaming?

I want a laptop that has great graphics, memory, and speed. One that I can play games like Counter Strike Source and TF2 on high settings without very much lag. Any suggestions?

Answer
An AMD w/ dedicated video card.
If you're at the store looking at the display laptops, the 1st thing you should look for on the computer surface is A LOGO STICKER FOR NVIDIA OR ATI MOBILITY RADEON just below the keyboard. This SHOWS that the laptop has A DEDICATED GRAPHICS CARD. Diablo III, the game I would love most to play is said to run on 3D graphics & is rumored to need at least 1GB (if you're a little into gaming like myself) graphics memory (a lower graphics memory = CHEAPER laptop price), so always check the system requirement specs of the game's packaging (ex. SIMS 3; see if your laptop meets all the requirements).
Next important aspect is the RAM (memory). If you're in designing & you need to ran applications like AutoCAD 2007 or softwares used for editing photos and videos, you have to make sure that the laptop has AT LEAST 2GB DDR2 memory modules in it (the more, the better; DDR3 the fastest and newest type of memory modules that came out last October).
But what makes a computer really run fast? It is it's processor! So if you really want your processor to have computing prowess & for you to be able to run different applications simultaneously, make sure it's AS EFFICIENT AS an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (Centrino 2 is a Core 2 Duo that features power saving capabilities; Quad Core is for gaming fanatics). A Core 2 Duo is like having 2 motors running your machine each independent of the other w/c means for a Quad Core, it's like 4 motors are running the machine (that means it will run faster & more efficient even if its frequency is lower to that of a Core 2 Duo). Intel: Core 2 Duo, Centrino 2, Quad Core & Core i-7 (Core i-5 for desktops only as of now) are all very much faster and better than an Intel: ATOM, CELERON & PENTIUM (and their more affordable AMD counterparts). Just make sure that you have AT LEAST 2GHz of speed on your processor. For my computer, I chose an Intel® Core⢠i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB; newest type just came out this Nov) w/c is just the right stuff for the applications I use & games I play.
The average laptop LCD screen size is 15.4". If you want something smaller than that w/ these 3 features I just shed some light on, expect the price to go higher (ex. for 13.3" & 14.1" LCD screens).
The HDD (Hard Disc Drive) should have at least 320GB {I would have loved it if my HP came w/ 2 HDD bays like a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6979: 1st one for a 128GB SSD (Solid State Drive) & a 500GB (72000rpm) 2nd HDD}.
If you've thought of a SMALL, PORTABLE and affordable laptop, the new Sony CW13FX/B Jet Black glossy notebook went on sale @ Fry's about 3 weeks ago (for only $699.99). I checked out the price they had in other stores & Fry's was cheaper by about $200 {go to Fry's Electronics (www.Fry's.com) then type in this # 6029078 (or 6029138 for white & 6029108 for pink) in the search box under Notebooks/Tablets before you click on GO}. Now, after the sale, the price went up by $100, so we are waiting for it to go on sale again after Thanksgiving. Let's say you are on 9th grade.. when buying a computer, you have to consider if you will still be able to use the one you bought for college? For this particular Sony model, I would assure you, you can still use it for college as long as you take good care of it & not break it (for the technology installed on this computer will not be outdated & still be good in 10 years to come, but this is just an example). There are a lot of good brand of computers out there Toshiba, Dell, HP and ACER (w/c owns Asus & Gateway; has affordable computers w/ the newest technology installed), you just need to look for the ones on sale (try display computers on Clearance Sale inside stores like Micro Center, Best Buy and Office Depot). Try http://www.newegg.com/ look for Pavilion dv6-1362nr (sale @ $649.99).
MICROSOFT OFFICE IS AN OFFICE PRODUCTIVITY SOFTWARE (so you would need to buy the retail version after the 60-day Free Trial Version that comes with all brand new computers expires, to be able to use the Word, Excel and Power Point applications). Retail version is about $159, but you can get a discounted price of $99 w/ a configured Dell laptop (www.dell.com).
MacBooks, that is on a totally different aspect for Apple has their own OS (Operating System) unlike the common Windows OS (XP, Vista and THE NEWEST WINDOWS 7) that most computers come with.
For the best prices, go to Fry's, CostCo, MicroCenter and BestBuy's web sites for updates & comparison. There are a lot of options & different combinations you can try in customizing your own laptop, just STICK TO THE BARE ESSENTIALS first (www.HP.com). The 15.6" HP laptop I customized & had configured w/ the Intel® Core⢠i-7 came to a total amount of $1,455.80 ($136 tax + other sur-charges already included). I chose to pay more to have the newest technology installed so that I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT GETTING OUTDATED WITHIN THE NEXT 11 YRS.

I just want to know, because I'll be a freshman college student this upcoming semester and that means i need a portable laptop. Well the HP touchsmart has been getting my attention lately, and i'm really interested in purchasing one soon. Like I want to get it this week, and at office depot it's $799.

Should I wait till August? Would it get any cheaper?

Answer
Cat ...

Prices for technology generally drop over time, but probably not very much by August.

You want to compare apples to apples with desktop pc's and laptops. For example, you can compare the memory, hard-drive space, monitor size, etc, of the HP Touchsmart TX2 that you're interested in with these, to ensure you're getting the best deal:

What is the best brand for laptops and why?

I need to buy a laptop because it is a lot more efficient for college. My price range is anywhere from 950 to 1250. I need something with Removable Device ports, ethernet ports, compact and floppy drives, and the overall brand has to be easy to carry and highly portable.

Answer
Hmm...I don't think you can get laptops with floppy drives anymore. You have to buy that seperate from the laptop. But if its gonna be for school then let me suggest a Flash Drive instead. That's what I use for all my school work. Its easy to take to class, to the library and such...just that some flash drives are too small and haha you might misplace. I used to have an HP 14 inch laptop and it worked great. Now, I have a Gateway M-6848 15 inch and it weighs the same as my old HP laptop. My new Gateway also works bery good...the only thing is that you have to get used to the Vista software.

My laptop has 4 GB Memory and has a 250 GB hard drive.
5 in 1 memory card reader, Web Camera, wireless lan, 3 USB ports,...and more. I got mine for $649.99 at Office Depot. Its not on sale anymore though it is now $749.99 although it is a great buy. But again you'll have to get used to Vista.
