Can you use a portable hard drive to work with your PlayStation 3?

Jo-Jo

Answer
yeah i connect my 60gb portable harddrive to it all the time and the PS3 can play pretty much any video or audio file you have on it. But another good thing you can do is download a PS3 media server so that you can view all of the files that you have on you pc through your PS3 without having to transfer them to the harddrive.

Hard drive plug into a Playstation 3?

Q. Hi everyone

Im no computer head so I want to know if a Seagate Expansion 250GB USB2.0 Portable Hard Drive plug into a Playstation 3 ?

And if so is it a easy process ?

Answer
You can add an external hard drive to save games but you need a computer with access to the Internet to format the drive correctly BEFORE you plug it up to your PS3.

asgapollo

will a Black Cherry 320gig portable high-speed usb drive connect 2 my PlayStationn 3? i have a 40gig ps3 but i'll be running out of space soon. as of right now it wont 'see' it when its plugged in 2 my ps3?
,,,please read the question before you post,,,,it clearly states that it 'is' plugged in!
ps,nate you don't even own a ps3 or a high speed drive,,,maybe nxt crystmis.

Answer
First make sure its FAT32, plug it into a PC and right click on it for properties, it'll say 'File System: FAT32'.
You can use SwissKnife to format the drive into FAT32 (make sure there's nothing important on the drive first)

You can only store media such as videos, music n pictures on an external harddrive for the PS3. Game saves, installs, downloads n demo's can only be installed on the PS3's hard drive, so you may just have to upgrade your PS3's harddrive size. its pretty simple and there's many tutorials n videos online of how to do it.

Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB USB 3.0/2.0 Ultra Portable External Hard Drive (Black)?

peterduong

I currently own a WD MY PASSPORT and a PS3

Own:
Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB USB 3.0/2.0 Ultra Portable External Hard Drive (Black)
-It works very well and everything and I love it very much.
PLAYSTATION 3

But here's the problem,

Problem:
I own a PS3 and I want to use it to play my media on the PS3( Musics, Movies). I've researched this up many times and many different blogs, forums, and threads. It tells me that I should reformat the hard drive to FAT32 format which I've done on multiple occasions.. And it seems to still not be able to read. Now it says on the hard drive that it's USB 2.0/3.0 compatible, so there should be no problem there. So I don't know what the problem is! PLEASE HELP!!!!

Want:
-to make WD MY PASSPORT, work on my PLAYSTATION 3. (being able to read the hard drive)

link for the hard drive for more description:

Saving playstation 3 files to an external HDD?

portable hard drive playstation 3 on ... USB Flash Drive Data Recovery 7.0
portable hard drive playstation 3 image

So i got a 40gb ps3 and i've been seeing all these things about hooking up portable external hard drives and formatting them to FAT32. If i do this and my ps3 reads it, can i save like full games on the HDD and then be able to play them on my ps3. Or save demos that i downloaded from PSN and the save them to the external drive?

Answer
Next to my PS3 I have a external hard drive formatted in FAT32. There I can store all my music, videos and photos. Game trailers, music soundtracks, etc downloaded from psn can be downloaded to a external hard drive.

Unfortunately It is not possible to store any game content on this external hard drive. Games you buy in store will make a game data utility on you PS3 hard drive. Also games that you download like full purchased games, demos, downloadable content etc from the psn store will also be downloaded and installed on your PS3 hard drive.

I use my external HDD as a media center. Here I store all my music, videos (divx and such) and music. This to reserve as much space as I can for games, demos and downloadable content. If you want to format an external HDD lager than 32gb you should find someone with a Mac. Mac OSX can format all sizes of hard drives to a windows FAT32 format.

If you run out of disk space, you can consider buying a 2.5" laptop hard drive and replace it with your 40gb PS3 hard drive. More information on replacing hard drives here.

Can you watch movies in .avi format on a ps3 that are saved on a portable hard drive?

rsalyers44

I was getting movies that are in .avi format and putting them on a portable hard drive and was watching them on my xbox 360. I was thinking of switching to a ps3 and was wondering if you can watch them on the playstation 3???

Answer
Yeah, you can. The good thing about the PS3 is that it supports way more audio and video formats than the Xbox 360, which is great if you have a diverse media library, but a horrible problem is that it can't read NTFS-formatted hard drives, only FAT, which sucks.

Do you need to install a modchip in order to play games you download online and burn to disc for a xbox?

Mr Alby C

I want to know if a xbox needs a modchip to play games that are uploaded online and available for download. I was planning on getting the iso for 007 nightfire, but wasn't sure about the whole process and didn't want to waste a perfectly good blank dvd.

Answer
Don't listen to the first answer.

You do not *need* a modchip in order to play copied games.
There is a hardware mod ( shortened to hard mod)
and a Software mod (shortened to soft mod)

The hard-mod is a HARDWARE based MODIFICATION. This is the where all modchips fall into. This is basically telling the mother board to allow skip and allow copied games. It's basically like insecting a 3rd party into your brain and them brain washing you to allow certain things and then you obey.

Softmod's are usually cheaper and easier then hard-mods if you don't want to open your console to much or not familiar with soldering things onto mother boards.Softmods are also CHEAPER then hardmods because the mod chips required can be a little pricey. Softmods are also very common in Sony PlayStation Portables, Xbox (original) and even Nintendo Wii's.

If you want to mod your Xbox ( I have done this and can vouch for this) try this. It's 100% free if you have the materials already. Like a screw-driver and what not:http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-softmod-your-xbox...for-FREE/

The above link is the way I modded my Xbox over a year ago.

Another version of a softmod is here. this costs a bit of money but it's not too much. If I had the money I would have done it this way because it would have saved me time, and the hassle:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/218495

After you have found out how to mod your xbox watch this video I reccomend on burning Xbox games:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-Tc0y2Qcg8
and for any other questions try this website:

www.freewebs.com/xbox-scene

Hope I can help and enjoy modding your Xbox!

Here are somethings modding your Xbox can lead to:
*Linux
*internet Browser
*GBA,NES,SNES and other old school games on Xbox
*Store FULL xbox games onto the Xbox's hard drive
*Upgrade the hard drive
*Easy FTP Access once modded.
*Change Themes/Settings
*Homebrew Application
*Email!
*User accounts on Xbox, which you can make your own passwords ttoo.

Just be careful when modding. There was a certain file, i think .XBE file and well I accidently deleted it and that was the end...

What is the difference between the regular ps3 and the ps3 slim?

Mickey

Thinking of buying a ps3 but I am not sure of which one to buy

Answer
PS3 SLIM
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002I0J4VQ?tag=dcmb-20

COMPARED TO PLAYSTATION 3 "FAT"
A LOT SMALLER
I heard that it was smaller, but seeing is believing! The photos don't do the system justice, and it's not really till you see and feel the difference that you are impressed with it. If you can, go into your local game store and check it out for yourself! If you've previously owned a Playstation console, you already know the difference the slimmer version makes when compared to the original, bulky ones. What's really convenient is that the slimmer PS3 not only means your video gaming is more portable, but that you have a really convenient Blu-Ray player.

NOT A FINGERPRINT MAGNET
I love the sleek look of my PS3 Fat, but don't like how it constantly needs to be cleaned. The glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet! The matte finish on the Slim is much easier to maintain. That being said, it doesn't look as shiny and cool, but I think its convenience outweighs that.

MORE STORAGE
Storage was never an issue for me on my 80GB system, but for those who wanted more storage, you get 40GB more with this system (120GB in total). It may not seem like much, but you can hold MANY movies, pictures, and music albums with 120GB. If that's still not enough, you can always install a 2.5" hard drive yourself, or better yet, plug in an external hard drive in one of the USB ports. You can easily get a portable 500GB external hard drive for less than $100, or a bigger, bulkier one with around 1TB of storage for roughly the same. That being said, I think 120GB for $300 should be more than enough for most users, and is a significant improvement over the 80GB for $400 that people were paying just a few weeks ago!

STILL NOT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE
This is my one major gripe with the Playstation 3. It really wouldn't have killed Sony to include this feature, as the original Playstation 3's did in fact include backwards compatibility with older Playstation 2 games. A lot of people counter by either saying (1) it doesn't make sense to buy a PS3 to play PS2 games, (2) the graphics on the PS3 are better anyway so why bother with older games, and (3) including backwards compatibility would cannibalize PS3 game sales.

While those arguments might have their merits, I'm still frustrated that my massive PS2 library can't be played on the PS3, and was really hoping that Sony would include backwards compatibility on the Slim! I loved the fact the PS2 was backwards compatible with PS1 games, and really wish that Sony would reconsider this decision.
