Adding A Portable Hard Drive with my PS3?

Rocker

I have a portable hard drive full of pictures and home movies I wanted to play on my PS3. My PS3 is not recognising my hard drive. I use the same USB cord that came with the hard drive and no response.

Can anyone tell me another way to make my PS3 work with my portable hard drive?

Answer
If the hard drive is shown (i.e there is an icon for it in the XMB), but there are no contents it is because the PS3 expects things to be in specific directories. Just press the triangle and select show all.

If you do not see the hard drive, it is likely not formatted to FAT32, which the PS3 requires. Most larger size drives now come pre-formated to NTFS. There is usually a utility to convert them available from the manufacturers website, but it will wipe the data so make sure you back it up.

How could I make my ps3 detect my portable hard drive?

I have an 80gb seagate portable hard drive and works with usb 2.0, but my ps3 80gb wont detect it..it will only detect my small ipod and my psp..any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
You may have to press triangle more then once depending on the hard drives file structure

Simply take a jump drive, external hard drive, etcâ¦hook it up to the USB port on the front and then you--

Goto to view under music, or video, or photos, scroll down to the drive you've hooked up hover over it then push Triangle(notX) then select display all (view all)(press X) and it will show everything on the jump drive or external harddrive. Then either listen to or view the music, video, photos or copy to the ps3 hard drive directly.

If you have a psp you can also use that to move files from pc to ps3.

I'm trying to play on my brothers ps3 with saves from my ps3. Is there a way to do this without switching harddrives, using a flash drive, or memory card? Will a cd work? How bout a portable hard drive? If not, anything else?

Answer
you can use a portable hard drive, but it has to be formatted for the ps3, so if you have anything on your hd you should back them up to your computer, move the info from one ps3 to the other and then reformat the hd to your pc and transfer your data back to it from your pc.

How to transfer files to and from PS3?

nasty

How does one go about backing up files on one's PS3 onto a portable hard drive? I also would like to know if it is possible to transfer files such as music and video from an external hard drive to a PS3.

Answer
Go to system settings and then there is a backup utility. Select it and choose backup. Takes roughly a half hour give or take.

Yes you can transfer files from an external hard drive to the PS3. I do this all the time as I can't keep all of my music on the PS3 (I only have a 40 GB). It just needs to be in formats supported by the PS3. Music, PS3 will read MP3, WMA, and AAC. Video is primarily MP4 and MPEG.

How to get media files to work on a ps3 from a portable harddrive?

I have a Ps3 (fat version) and i have a 250 gig portable hard drive with media and music and pictures from off my computer and it doesn't work on my ps3 doesn't show up at all. any help?

Answer
First off, external drives have to be formatted in FAT32 for the PS3 to recognize them. I would check that yours is not NTFS. Second, the PS3 usb ports do not put out much power. I know some people have had issues when trying to use hard drives that do not have external power cables (powered through the usb cable). Once you get it going, you still might have some issues with music formats, but thats another issue all together,

Not part of your question, but another rout you might want to go, is streaming from your pc. Thats what I do, for both music and movies. As well as Hulu and youtube... If you decide to try that, you can either go through wireless, connect wired to a router, or straight to your pc. Couple free programs for this below.

As for the hard drive, you might need to get either a self powered external, or a smaller one. Then format to FAT32... I would still keep the size below 250gig though, just because that seems to be another issue as well.

Good luck!
