What is the best brand/kind of portable hard drive?

I'm looking to free up my laptop with an portable hard drive. I don't a good brand or model for one. What has worked for you all?

Western Digital is a very good / reliable brand. Many choices based on size and connections (USB/Firewire). A lot of good values in the 250-320gb range

I have a laptop with like 10GB out of 218 left.

yes you can you just need to format it to the right file type fat32 or ntfs more likely the later
put it in to the laptop and use your os disk to start instaling then use the hardware from the portable case to copy your data from your old hard drive

How do I change the root letter of my portable hard drive from G to F in Windows XP?

I plugged my portable hard drives in a different order and it automatically assigned them different letters. Now my programs are looking in the wrong places for files. How do I manually assign drive letters?

I hate no talent clowns on here... changing your drive letter is really easy.

-right click "My Computer"
-click "manage"
-click "disk management" under "storage"
-right click on the drive you want to change
-click "change drive letter and path"
-click "change"
-change the drive letter
