Portable hard drive vs external hard drive?

dddr3017

I recently had to re-install everything on my laptop. I am looking into an external drive for my files. I recently read the difference between a portable vs external hard drive. I am going to use the hard for my documents, photos and music. I am looking to possibility using as more as a back up and/or when I need to travel and need to do my work. Can someone recommend which type I should use and/or the amount of storage i should purchase?

Thanks

Answer
Well I currently use an external Seagate 1TB hard drive for all of my back ups, movies, music and games. Most external hard drives are actually very portable and easy to take on the road.

The size of the hard drive you decide on is really going to depend on how much media you plan on storing. If you want to plan for the future like me go big, and find a nice 500GB to 1TB+ hard drive. You can also find smaller sizes for less money of you don't think you'll ever use that much space.

Bestbuy has an average selection but I'd also recommend Newegg.com.
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=414&name=External-Hard-Drives They have a wider selection and often have great deals including free shipping.

I hope this helps. =)

External/Portable hard drives?

Miss Liz

Which brand is better? Quality wise, I see a lot of products by Seagate and Western Digital.
Does the brand matter, or should I just go with the one that is more in my price range. Both brands have products that I would choose, but ultimately, one has a better deal. Which is Seagate. Should I just go with the cheaper one, or is Western Digital a bit better.

Also, what is the portable hard drive just a good as a regular external hard drive?

I'm looking at buying a Seagate portable hard drive for $50. But then there is also a Seagate External hard drive (bigger, not as portable, but still hold the same gigage.) for a few dollars more.

I guess my main question is, does it matter if I choose between Western digital or Seagate?
I want at least a 320 gig. 1T would be as big as I would go, although not really needed. At 320 or 500 is ideal. But, my main misunderstanding is mostly about the brands. Help? :)

Also, any suggestions for a quality external hard/portable drive would be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
I would go with the cheaper. I always do, and I have about 11 TB of hard drive space right now and 6TB of it is Seagate. Never had a problem with Seagate.

That being said, a friend of mine swears by Western Digital, and he did have one issue with a Seagate a few years back.

This one is good for a 320GB

This one is good for a 1TB
