does a ''laptop harddrive'' work with desktops?

Dusty Rhod

i wanna buy this external hard drive:
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6756932/c_1/1|category_root|Office%2C+PCs+and+phones|12108629/c_2/2|cat_12108629|Hard+drives+and+data+storage|12108709.htm

does that mean it works only on laptops and not normal desktops??? can i buy it for my desktop?? please advise

Answer
well, it does say "laptop: harddrive... putting two & two together, i'd think it was meant for a laptop... ever think of buying it and seeing if it works and if it doesn't send it back for a refund? Your best bet to avoid a confusing situation is to go look for a portable hard drive that either specifies it is only for a desktop or one that just states that it simpliy is just a portable hard drive.

Looking for a Mac/PC 1TB External Hard Drive for Photo Storage.?

HASTHEANSW

I am looking for an external hard drive to store photos of a small business I work for. I upload the photos onto my Macbook Pro, and I want to dump these onto an external drive, but I need to have a drive that can be accessed by PC computers.

Recommendations and suggestions are much appreciated. Know little to nothing about external storage.

Looking for 1TB of storage and USB 3.0 appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

i'm looking for a cheap external hard drive to hold photos and music?

squeee

i need one available in the uk, with good value for money.. i'm on a budget of roughly £60.
please reply! (: x

Answer
Theres 2 types of external hard drives

1 is Desktop External Hard drive, its the type of hard drive you dont move you just keep it there, and they are powered by a main adapter that comes with the external drive. These are usaully the cheapest of the external hard drive. Its basically a 3.5inch hard drive in a case but the size is kinda big.

2 is Portable External Hard drive, these are the types that you take around with you such as on trips, holidays and so on, if you need access on the go. These are usaully small since its basically a 2.5inch hard drive in a case that connect to you Pc/ Laptop by a usb cable. These usauly cost a bit more.

For £50 you can get a 500GB External Desktop hard drive with a free 4gb USB at argos
[offer ends 23rd of feb]

[Link >> http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6758655/c_1/1|category_root|Office%2C+PCs+and+phones|14418968/c_2/3|15701344|Hard+drives%2C+USBs+and+data+storage|14419053/c_3/4|cat_14419053|Portable+hard+drives|14419054.htm ]

For £50 you can get a 320GB Portable External hard drive with a free carry case worth £10
[offer ends 23rd of feb]
[Link >> http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6758617/c_1/1|category_root|Office%2C+PCs+and+phones|14418968/c_2/3|15701344|Hard+drives%2C+USBs+and+data+storage|14419053/c_3/4|cat_14419053|External+hard+drives|16528298.htm ]

For both if you want the free usb or case click on special offer and tick the box, why not its a free gift lol.

I say go for the 500gb Desktop one if your using a PC, but if your using a laptop i suggest the 320gb Portable one if you like a smaller sized and easy to carry drive.

Which External Hard drive shoud I Buy (UK)?

Hi folks,

I need to know which computer equipment I need for extra storage. I've been thinking to get an external hard drive, because my computer internal ide harddrive is running out of space. I do alot of movie editing, and download alot of media contents.

I don't know much about computers, but I have been suggested by people to get an external hard drive. I looked around and I've seen some with 1 terabytes. Are terabytes big?! I mean it sounds as if it can handle alot of storage...could someone please suggest to me any good external hard drive that isn't too cheap and isnt too expensive, but has alot of stoage capacity...

Woudl really appreciate it... I

IFthere are any good links with products from PC WORLD, or any other online store would appreciate it!

Even if there are some hard drives at Argos!

Answer
your best bet is western digital, i my self am a film editor and i frequently use mine.
1 terabyte= 1000gb so yeah it is really big and very expensive!
so you need to ask yourself do i really need that amount of space?
often the answer is no.
also you need to consider things like, do i want it to be USB powers or mains?
because i am almost certain that any hard drive over 500gb has to be plugged into the wall because your computer wont give it enough power.

anyway here is the one i have its pretty cheap and enough for me
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Passport-Essential-Portable/dp/B0013NE4S2/ref=dp_cp_ob_ce_title_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1235138778&sr=8-1

that might be too small for your needs so...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Passport-Essential-Portable/dp/B0012IAA8G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1235138883&sr=8-1

but i think that's as big as you really need

well maybe if you wanna go that bit further-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-WDME5000TE-Essential-Midnight/dp/B001GT7F84/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1235138983&sr=8-1

BUT I REALLY REALLY RECOMMEND WESTERN DIGITAL
They're fast, reliable, small, cheap and they have excellent customer support.

Answer
Overall this computer is great for day to day tasks but could be much better for graphics and video games Overall (3.5 out of 5)
* - terrible
** - room for much improvement (not even satisfactory)
*** - satisfactory
**** - Good
***** - Great, recommended
(N/A) - Not applicable

Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5750. (****) this is a pretty good processor for the price point

2GHz processor speed. (****) this is running at 4GHz total between the two processors so it is quite quick for running multiple apps etc.

2Mb cache.(***) this is the amount of quick access memor your computer uses, this is satisfactory, the more the better

2Gb DDR2 RAM 667MHz.(***) this is enough RAM to run vista, and a couple other Apps at once, but once you get into new games, internet, apps, etc, you will need more, however this is not bad, and upgrading is cheap (about 60$ for 2gb for laptop memory)

17in screen size. (*****/*) this screen is great for watching movies, playing videogames and editing using photoshop etc. However this is terrible for portability. The larger the screen the heavier it is, the less portable it becomes and the harder it is to find computer cases for it.
Games -> *****
Portability -> *

Resolution 1440 x 900 pixels. (N/A)Standard Pixels for ScreenSize

Widescreen. Preferrable over fullscreen because it is apparently easier on the eyes and can be more practical and portable

250Gb SATA hard drive.(****) this is a fairly large hard drive that will give you all the space you need to house all of your apps, music, data, videos, games, etc. (If you do run out of space there are External Hard Drives for decent prices) (ACTUAL HARD DRIVE SPACE IS APPROX. 221 Gb) 250 is the marketing size

Multi format, dual layer, optical drive.(N/A) Standard Drive nowadays

24x CD-ROM read speed.(***) Could be a bit faster but is good enough

10x CD-RW write speed.(***)

8x DVD-ROM read speed.(***)

4x DVD-RW write speed.(***)

Intel GMA X3100 graphics.(**) WARNING! This graphics card is quite slow. IF you intend to use this Laptop for simple processes than this will be fine, HOWEVER if you intend to use this for new games, it would be a better choice to get a graphics card. THIS GRAPHICS CARD IS NON UPGRADABLE (this means when you realize that this graphics card is not great, it cant be replaced without a whole new computer

Up to 358Mb graphics memory.(**) This is pretty basic, If you want to run new games, try getting a better graphics card, the integrated cards are bad

5-in-1 media card reader - compatible with Memory Stick Pro, MMC, SD, xD.(****) This can be quite handy when using many different forms of memory, recommended for those who use cameras, cell phones, video cameras, mp3s etc. MUST HAVE

4 USB ports.(****) This is very good. You will need these to run all of your common computer desk accessories. THe more the better. If you do need more there are always Hubs for about 20-40$ that will increase your max to 8

1 Ethernet port.(N/A) Needed to connect to internet. STANDARD

1 FireWire port.(****) Good, needed to download information from digital cameras, without it, it can be very slow and frustrating

TV out interface.(****) Great to add a secondary monitor, such as an HDTV, this can be very helpful, but not completely necessary seeing as it has a 17" screen

Dolby sound.(*****) Great, improves sound quality when listening to music, movies, games, etc.

Harmon Kardon speakers.(***) Most laptop speakers are not very loud and so i give this 3.

1.3Mp webcam.(****) Great for chatting with others through the internet. Recommended for those who enjoy talking online

Modem.(N/A) Needed to connect to the internet

802.11 a/b/g wi fi enabled.(****) Although standard on most laptops nowadays, wi fi enables a greater amount of portability to your computer, it means that you do not have to plug an ethernet cable into your laptops port (Requires Wireless Internet)

Microsoft Vista Premium operating system installed.(***) This is not bad for those with a bit of extra RAM, but needs to be stripped down to run new games and Applications smoothly on current specs

Software included: MS Works, Ulead DVD movie factory, Toshiba DVD player, McAfee Internet Security Suite 2008 (30 day trial).
(N/A) Comes with most laptops

2 hours battery life.(***) Although the 6Cell battery comes with most laptops nowadays it can truly be a pain. Often you need a battery for about 3 hours. If you wish to upgrade your laptop battery go to the toshiba website.

Size (H)3.66, (W)39.8, (D)28.8cm.(***) Improves viewing area, keyboard area, but loses portability

Weight 3.2kg. (N/A)

Cost (***) could be a bit better for the cash, but might be the right one for you
Hope that helps

Anyone good with computers?

I want to buy this portable laptop hard drive:
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6756932/Trail/searchtext%3ELAPTOP+HARD+DRIVE.htm

Compatible with:
Windows 2000 Pro/XP Home and Pro/Vista: Pentium III, 500Mhz processor, 128Mb RAM (256Mb recommended).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Laptop is Intel Celeron M processer 520 (1.6 GHz, 533MHz FSB, 1MB L2 cache)
Windows Vista

1) WILL IT WORK ON MY COMPUTER?
2) CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT ALL THIS MEANS?
3) WHERE CAN I FIND THE RAM?

Answer
1)it'll probably work on your computer since the minimum requirement for the processor is 500mhz and yours is 1.6 ghz.
2)The windows would be what windows os it works on. The Pentium lll and 500mhz is the minimum processor requirement. 500mhz is how fast the processor is running at. RAM is Random access memory. It's what makes your computer go faster.
3)Go to the start menu and in the search bar at the bottom, type in system information. Click on the first one that pops up and scroll down until you see total physical memory and available physical memory. That is your RAM.

How to put files on my Seagate Portable Hard Drive?

Brian

I got a Seagate Hard drive a few months ago from Argos although my only use for it is to record shows on my Sony TV. Originally this is not what I bought this hard drive for. But when I dismount it from my tv and connect it to my laptop, it does not show up in 'My Computer' instead it is listed as a Hard Drive in 'My Devices', this means I cannot put files or take files off of the Hard drive. I was just wondering if anyone has a solution for this problem or if I should just go to a computer specialist.
Thank you (:

Answer
It appears that either

1. Sony is using a filesystem format not recognised by your PC
2. The disk is encrypted so nothing else can read it.

If you're adventurous you could try reading it from a "live" Linux-based distribution as such systems can often handle many more filesystem types than either Windows or Mac. But since the TV is by Sony it's very probable the disk is encrypted (so you can't simply copy off the TV programmes you've recorded).

A portable hard drive plugs into the USB or eSATA jack. (It's external to the computer.) An expansion drive is an internal drive.
