If I partition my portable Hard Drive, will everything get erased?

I'm trying to move everything over to my external so that I can partition it without having to backup anything but it's not really going so well, so I was just wondering if I could make an NTFS partition right now instead.

In XP, if you use the Windows tools, you will lose your data. If you use a tool like Partition Magic, your data will be preserved.

If you have Vista or Windows 7, the ability to resize an existing partition is built in to the OS.

Will lose everything in C drive if converted to external hd?

My laptop just stopped working. I want to take out the hard drive and use it as external usb hd. I was using vista and my drive had only one partition, "C:". So all my data was in C. So if i make this a portable hd, will i lose everything i had in C drive? Please help. Thanks folks.

No you won't affect any of the data by moving it to an external enclosure. It won't be C: any more natch - but everything will still be there.

You might have to modify the file permissions to get into your personal folders though. Windows might just give you the option to do this automatically with a message simlar to "You do not have permission to access this folder. WOuld you like to modify permissions to give you full access. Y/N". Just agree to that and you're good to go.

EDIT: ignore the other two posters. The second one is completely incorrect. This first one expected to still be able to run instaled applications. That's not going to happen - but I assume you just want to get your docs and pics and music etc. That will work fine with an external USB drive enclosure.
