What is the difference between an external hard drive and a portable hard drive?

I need a hard drive to save all my downloads for iTunes on so that I don't use up the computer space. I found an 500gb external hard drive for about 80$, and 160gb portable hard drive for about 110$. What's the difference between an external and portable, because it sounds like the same concept to me.

they are the exact same but some people don't know the right word
but portable hard drives are pocket sizes kinda like a flash drive but a bit bigger and external hard drive is more of an at home one you plug into the wall. id go with the external 500gb for 80 rather than 160 for 110 500 is allot more and more useful my opinion.

I need to restore my ps3 and before I do, I need to save my data. I bought a 500GB toshiba external hard drive. When I plugged it in, nothing popped up and a friend said I might need to reformat it. But how? I've never formatted. Please help !

You will indeed need to reformat the drive. The type of formatting used on the drive currently is most likely NTFS, and you will have to reformat it using FAT32. Why? The PS3 won't recognize or use it unless it has been formatted FAT32. How do you do this? With your computer. Believe it or not, the Playstation community has multiple different posts on exactly how you would do this... IE the steps you would follow.
