External Hard Drive Formatting?
Sean
I want to format my 500GB External Hard Drive
I'm using a mac to format & partition it.
I want 2 Partitions:
A: 30GB dedicated to the transfer of files between PC and Mac
B: 470GB storage for my mac
What way should I do this and what file systems should I use?
Answer
First of all, you won't be able to use entire 500GB space on this drive. You will most likely be able to use only 465GB, so plan accordingly.
Now, create the partition for transferring files between PC & MAC
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Plug it in the PC
Right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage"
Click on "Disk management"
If you see any partition already created, right click on it and select "Delete" to delete all partitions.
You will see on the left the actual size you can use out of 500GB.
Right click on the "Unallocated Space" and click on "Create partition". Keep it as "Primary"
Type in the size for this drive. 1GB = 1024MB
Make sure you format this as "NTFS" (FAT32 does not support single files size above 4GB)
After that, take your hard drive to MAC and format the remaining space left on the drive.
Click on Go > Utilities
At last, download and install the software from link bellow. This will allow you to read/ write the partition you created in PC earlier in MAC.
