i need a 1tb or larger external hard drive that is compadible with mac and PC can anyone sugest a good one?? im planning on filling it with music only. thanks

You have a problem...You can't have the same hard drive with Windows and MAC at the same time, Windows can't ready MAC and vice versa.

Here the solution:

A) You buy 1 extrernal HDD 1TB or more and cut it in half 500GB/500GB(partition)
This is if you can't or don't want to buy 2 HDDs.

B) Buy 2 external HDDs 1TB or more and use the one for Windows and the other for MAC.

External Hard Drive Not Readable by Mac?

Hi--
I bought a new external hard drive today (I have a MacBook OS X Version 10.5.8) and i plugged it into my computer and reformatted it (to Mac OS X (Journaled) --i followed an online tutorial) and in the middle of erasing it my computer stopped and said error because it lost touch with the disk utility or something? it told me to relaunch disk utility, which i did and tried again and the same thing happened. after that, i unplugged the HD and tried to plug it back i nand a note popped up that it was unreadable by my computer. it gave me three options: eject, ignore, or initialize. i clicked initialize and it took me back to disk utilities so i tried to format it again and the same thing keeps happening.
i've tried retarting my computer, unplugging and plugging the hard drive in and nothing works. the bummer is i had the same hard drive before and i never had a problem formatting it... it's really frustrating because i have a lot of stuff to back up and i don't know what to do.. i'm terrible with computers, haha.
So if anyone who knows their way around a macbook and/or external (i have a Western Digital 3tb Elements) and could offer some insight i would really appreciate it.. thanks so mch in advance!

How do I move files into an external hard drive?

I recently bought a Seagate 3TB External Hard Drive, I plugged it into my Mac and attempted to move files into it. My computers internal hard drive holds 500GB and I was running out of space. However, whenever I try to move files into the external hard drive they only create copies of the files, I want to move the original file into it without creating a copy. The reason why I want to move the original files onto the hard drive is because I don't want to delete the files on my computer, because deleting the 250GB that I want on the external hard drive would take a while.

Hold down the Command key while dragging the selected files onto the external drive and they will be moved not copied.

With 3TB to play with perhaps setting up a 1TB partition to use as a Time Machine back up of the internal drive would be advantageous and use the other 2TB for general storage usage.

The initial backup will take a long time (leave it running overnight) but after that it will do hourly backups for any new files on the internal drive.

USB 3.0 External Hard Drives that will work with MAC OSX 10.4?

So, I've a slight problem. I can't seem to find a 3TB External Hard Drive which will work with a Mac OSX 10.4. The reason being I've some editing to do for a project and can't find not one Ext.HD to suit the OS that I have in the editing suite. Another reason is that the new iMac 27" is due after Christmas and I'll want external storage for when I hopefully buy the iMac. Can anyone please help. Said editing project needs to be done before christmas. Thanks!

I currently am using a Western Digital 1tb My Book for as my Time Machine device. It took only a few minutes to set it up and get it running.

I have had ZERO problems with it. I used to have this same device hooked up to my old Dell laptop as additional storage, and it worked beautifully.

They range in capacity from 1tb to 3tb, PLENTY of space. They are also compatible with USB 2.0 and 3.0.

Western external hard drive suddenly not recognized anymore on Mac please help.?

So my mac isn't picking up my western external 3TB hard drive anymore...
my OS is OS X 10.8.4
the hard drive is formatted to exFAT
it's not detected in disk utility either???

issue:
The light still turns on even when the USB isn't connected to the mac
the light doesn't blink...
the hard drive still makes noise as if data is being read or written

Two possibilities, both are failures:
1) The disk itself had died, and is simply trying re-seeks (clicking sounds)
2) The interface has died for some reason, but the disk is still good. Buying another external disk case and moving the drive over to it should allow a good drive to still run (and read old data)
