dSLR or HD Video Camera?

JV2017

Hey there,

I'm looking for a camera that will be used to record a "news show" for YouTube. Something that will be able to capture fairly high quality video of my face at a desk talking about stuff. And bear in mind, just because it's "for YouTube" doesn't mean I wanna cut corners on quality!

I've talked briefly with a photographer friend of mine, and he suggested that I looked into getting a dSLR. I found the Rebel T3i, but upon further research, it seemed like I'd be buying a device that's focused more on Photography than record clear, crisp HD video! Although I may be slightly interested in taking a few pictures now and again, I think it makes more sense to get a device made for recording HD video. I want something that's portable, but can also be mounted for use in my show.

Long story short, I want a device that can:

1. Record high quality HD video (1080p preferred, maybe 720p)
2. Be both portable and able to be mounted on a tripod
3. Around $500, preferably cheaper

Can anyone recommend a solid option for me? dSLR, Camcorder, HD Video Camera, whatever you think will suit my needs. I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Answer
A dSLR is designed to capture still images. Capturing video (and audio) is a secondary "convenience feature". This is why most have known problems overheating when capturing video for long periods and have poor manual audio-gain control. This is not to say they cannot capture good video, they can - but using this secondary convenience feature requires the user to workaround these and other known issues. Along with this is the fact that they mostly capture video compressed video. More compression = reduced video quality.

A camcorder is designed to capture video and audio. For $500 or less, you are in the low-end of consumer camcorders. It will not have the overheating problems a dSLR in he same price range will have. It *should* have a mic jack and some sort of manual audio control. Pretty much all consumer camcorders in your price range will meet your requirements.

If the primary reason for the equipment is digital stills, then the dSLR is preferred. Video capture is an afterthought. If the primary reason for the equipment is video, then get a camcorder. There is no single device that can provide both functions (especially for a prolonged period) well.

If the goal is "best available video quality", then use the proper tool to meet the goal.

What we don't know:
Whether your budget includes a tripod or other steadying device.
Whether your budget includes a couple of mics (perhaps a shotgun and a wireless lavalier.
Whether your computer can deal with the captured video.
Whether the computer has a video editor that can deal with the captured video.

any suggestions about a portable video camera?

looking for suggestions for a good purchase for my non-profit. thanks for your help.

Answer
HD Camcorders. You would have to spend $3500 on a HD camcorder to better video quality than a $350 MiniDV tape camcorders videos are. If a lot of high movement (sports, etc) are to shot, then do not get a consumer level HD camcorder as under those conditions, they take terrible video.

The Canon ZR 960 can be had for about $350. It has a Mic jack, can be mounted on a tripod, has many settings, uses MiniDV tape as a storage media.

You computer will need a firewire port in it for video transfer, you cannot hook this camera to a USB port. http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/campaigns/campaigntemplate.asp?CampaignID=233&srkey=firewire

what is a good video camera i can use for youtube that is a good cheap price. im 13 and u know how we dont have money. so tell me plz!!!

Answer
Theres a lot!
Sony Mini DV Handycam Camcorder. My friend uses it and its amazing quality its $299. It depends which one you get.

The Flip is easy to use and very portable. Its really good. Its shaped like a digital camera. Theres the Original Flip, Ultra Flip, Mino, or Mino HD. The range of the prices are $130 to $230 i think.

Some Canon camcorders are good, but I don't know the specific name of the really good one.

Samsung SC-MX20- This camcorder features a powerful 34x optical zoom and allows you to capture video directly to a wide variety of media cards, including Secure Digital High Capacity and MultiMediaCard Plus formats. Its really good. The price is $249.99

Since you said you don't have that much money, I reccomend the Flip

What computer model can handle the HD videos of an SLR camera?

At the moment I have a four-year old HP laptop, windows vista and it cannot handle the HD videos from my canon t3i digital SLR camera. Should I invest in a new computer or is there a way I can upgrade my HP to handle the videos?

Answer
A laptop is meant to be portable and a PC is meant to be powerful. While I have a laptop that I can use for editing photos(17.3" screen, 2.2GHz quad core CPU), I would not even try editing a video with it. Plus, as already stated, there is not a lot you can upgrade on a laptop.

My rule of thumb is...if your computer can't run BlackOps or GTA4 in high res/full detail without lags/bogging/glitches, then you will have issues editing a video.

I had some minor issues with my PC and wound up putting about $550 of upgrades in it ($250 video card, $125 sound card, $100 high speed RAM to go from 4Gb to 8Gb, and a 500watt powersupply for the video card). The system screams now...what used to take 1+hours to compile a video, now takes about 15-20minutes. (PLUS the games look sooo much better)

Answer
I purchased panasonic HDC - TM55 last week just before going on a trip to charleston and smoky mountains. This camcorder has so many features packed in a tiny attractive body.

The main attractions
=====================
1) 25x optical zoom - this was very useful while taking photos as well as during video capture. There are not too many cameras which provide 25x useful optical zoomin such a small body. Photography and video capture at 25 x optical ( 35x intelligent zoom ) is a real big bonus. I found this to be very useful especially while on the boat in the sea and was able to capture snaps of seagulls very well.
2) Better shake reduction mechanism. Camera adjusts to most of the shakes. It even displays a message camera panning too fast.
3) Xenon flash and LED video light - Xenon flash is pretty useful for night photography. Video light doubles up as an AF lamp during photography as well as the light for night video capture. Light is good but it seems to be a bit weaker than the single LED flash of my blackberry bold. For a price range of around 500$ this is a nice feature to have. Another good thing is video light turns on automatically if the surroundings are dark. But videos whll have a bluish white tinge. Its better to be used as a flashlight if battery has enough juice left in it :).
3) Responsive touch screen - pretty good touch screen. Not any iphone like but still very good.
4) Well laid out menu - Lots of options in the menu. capability to play video alone, photo alone, both together ( thats a nice feature I think ).
5) Nice 2.7 LCD screen - > good bright sunlight visibilty. Rotating screen for self portrait or video capture. Screen buttons provide nice image/video tweaking opoortunities.
6) Quick Zoom in/out.
7) Fits perfectly in hand. The holding strap is also good. Battery provides nice support.
8) Support for high capacity memory cards. Cards will make camcorders even lighter. My sony vaio laptop has an SD card reader. So its very easy to plug the card in and see all videos/photos.
9)Relatively wide angle lens when compared to sub 500$ camcorders.
10) Nice bundled software for editing 1080i videos.

Cons
=====
1) power switch, memory card slot and AV/HDMI ports can be accessed only if LCD screen is open. Sure the camera will power on opening the LCD ( but not first time after immediate purchase ). To output to the TV, LCD would have to remain open.
2) Camera's automatic white balance seems to be a bit insufficient. Most of the time I had to manually set the white balance for a more natural appeal for the photos/videos.
3) Its good that there is a manual mode. But relying on touch screen to change the values is a bit dificult. Had there been some ring around the lens to adjust, it would have been good.
4) unlike panasonic Lumix ZS7 which gives an excellent portable charger, this camcorder requires battery to remain seated on the camcorder for charging to take place. Its Ok but a separate charger would have added to the excellent portability.

The above mentioned cons are not really deal breakers when we consider the fact that this product costs around 420$ with a bag full of usable positive features which any family/person might be looking for. Compact body, ease of operation, excellent quality of videos/photos ( if we can manually adjust white balance ) is good enough to look over the negatives. All in all this is a great product for a great price.

What would be a good video camera?
