Western Digital and Seagate have been making hard drives for a really long time. I've had 2 Western Digitals and never had any problems with them. I suspect Seagate is as good.

I got a 500gb Western Digital on black Friday for $30. Very cool.

Which USB cable does Lacie Hard Disk external hard drive use?

I have a Lacie Hard Disk design by Neil Poulton external hard drive. I need a USB 2.0 cable to use it, but I can't figure out which. The regular size USB is too thick and doesn't fit in the drive. I've looked for a while but I can't find any USB cable that has one side the standard USB size to go into the computer and the other side a bit thinner to go into the hard drive. Is this what I even need? Help!? I'd really appreciate any help with this. Thank you.

The drive came with a USB cable, can you find the original?
There is more than one Poulton designed drive. The desktop models (the ones with a power adapter to plug into the mains) use a standard square-ish USB "B" connector, just like a printer. If you have a portable LaCie drive, then it could have a USB Mini-B or Micro-B connector.

portable external hard drive?

ive been looking for a good portable external hard drive to carry with my laptop. however, i dont know what brand to buy.
i was considering Seagate for a while, because they got good reviews, but they were either 5 star reviews or 1 star reviews. (either they got it and it worked or they got it and it worked for a while then broke)

a friend of mine recommended LaCie, but the reviews on some of their drives are not very good.

also, my friend doesnt reccomend Western Digital.

if anyone could recommend a good PORTABLE external hard drive brand (or model with at least 500GB of space) it would be much appreciated. also, price is an issue. (id rather not shell out $150 on this).

check the list, Iomegas are pretty good externals. I would agree with your friend, do not buy the western digital. I had a friend who brought one and have had nothing but troubles with it. But then again, it is a chance, a risk when buying any hard drive. It may last for years, or at worst, months. no telling really with any brand.

I have a lacie external, but I dont make it portable, have had it for more then 5+ yrs and it still runs great.

I don't know if there is a big difference between a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro 500GB USB 2.0 7200 rpm vs LACIE Rugged 500GB 7200 RPM USB Firewire 800. Any ideas or suggestions?

Go Firewire. It will have at least twice the data throughput rate as the USB 2.0 drive. RPM has little effect on external drives, as the data interface (USB or Firewire) is almost always the limiting factor.

I need to get an external hard drive with lots and lots of space on it, but I'm not really up on which brands are reliable. I need something compatible with Windows (preferably XP and Vista, but as long as it works for one of them, I'll work around it); I don't really care if it's particularly portable, so long as it's not going to crash on me. The stuff I'll be putting on it is not stuff I can afford to lose.

At work, we pretty much exclusively use LaCie external drives. These are used on our demo systems so they are fairly rugged.

As for answers above, I tend to avoid Maxtor drives. They were the cheaper option from the local computer store and I gave them a shot several times. Out of the 3 drives from Maxtor, all three have been replaced. One died within 2 weeks of having it, the others within 6 months. Maxtor replaced the one and that too died within 6 months. Maybe I just have bad luck with their disk, but I'll avoid them (maybe since they are owned by Seagate, I'll give them a shot again in the future, but nothing soon). My vote is Western Digital, Seagate, or Samsung.

Reread your question and I don't think I adequately addressed your statement about "The stuff I'll be putting on it is not stuff I can afford to lose". No matter which drive you ultimately choose, you must still backup your data to another drive or removable media. All drives fail, no matter who makes them. Some may be more reliable than others, but they all eventually fail. Plan to keep multiple copies and implement a regular backup plan based on your data protection needs. If you really need a single device to support hardware failure (not human error - i.e. you accidentally delete or corrupt a file), consider a hardware RAID device. A RAID 5 configuration allows data to span multiple disk and survive a single drive failure (which you would then replace and a the device would rebuild the lost disk based on the data & parity of the remaining disk)

2 Tb is almost certainly more than you need. You could store about 1,500 full length DVD-ripped movies on 2 Tb.

In my opinion, the best external hard drive made is the LaCie Rugged All-Terrain USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive. It has the following features:

Drop-resistant (not drop-proof though)
"Portable" means that you don't have to plug in a separate power cord
USB 3.0 means that it will be faster with newer computers that have USB 3.0
7200 RPM is the fastest type of external drive

am looking at the portable hard drives with 500gb and there are many brands and I am unsure which ones are good ones and which ones to stay away from. They are all in the same price range. They are samsung, toshiba, western digital, a-data, lacie, seagate and dane-elec. Any info on these would be helpful.

The interface matters the most and you probably want 7200 RPM instead of 5400 RPM, unless you use the external hard drive infrequently and want to save power. Do you have e-SATA, firewire ports, or USB 3.0 ports? Note that USB 2.0 is standard now and few people have 3.0 yet.

I've had my Macbook for about three years now. I use it mostly for iMovie and the mov flies take up a lot of space so I've been putting them on a portable hard-drive. Last week my portable hard-drive crashed so I got a new one and now the new one is having problems! I can't put the mov flies on my mac cuz if I do, i won't have any space. What do I do? Should I get another hard drive or a new mac?

Get a good quality external hard drive - far cheaper than buying a new mac.
I've had a Lacie 2TB external drive for my movies for about 3 years now, not a problem.
I also have another external drive that I just use for backups and not in use continually.
Make sure that it connects with Firewire and not just USB.

I think you mean 500GB and to be honest all of the hard drives on the market are good so get one that is the cheapest.

But as a fan of Western Digital I'd have a look for one of those but that is just personal preference.
