Movies on portable hard drive?

Woodz

If i store a whole lot of dvd movies on a portable hard drive, could i plug it into a hd tv through a usb port and play the movies/ or could i pug it into my ps3 and play the movies through that way.

Answer
PS3 answer: you need a wireless network. You either have your portable plugged into your main computer or just dump all the crap back onto your main HD.

Wireless network if you are clueless there: buy a wireless router for ~$50. Hook that up to your DSL or Cable. Use a stroooooooong password and, preferably, hide the SSID. Your computer connects to an ethernet port on your router. Your PS3 connects to the network via wireless. Your PS3 can then, once they are both on the same network and sharing, browse to your PC and play files from it. You can browse files just like you were sitting at the keyboard. Doesn't even have to be DVD format on the movie files. You can play HD DivX .avi files, .mpeg's, whatever .. you can play them on the tv via the PS3 's connection to the PC.

music on ps3?

how do i do witout using a cd
can i connect wirelessly to my computer
can i connect my mp3 player to it (if so how i tried nothing happened)
how can i do this without a usb memory stick

Answer
If you have a portable MP3 player or somthing like a palm Pilot or Pocket PC, you can transfer the songs from your computer to a SD (secure digital card) and then take the card and pop it into the appropriate sd card slot in your ps3.
You can transfer your music files onto a flashdrive/thumbdrive and then take that and put it in the usb port. Make sure that you don't put the music into some kind of separate folder. Just transfer the song file directly onto whatever type of device/hardware you are going to use and then transfer those files directly into the ps3.

Edit: If you don't have a flashdrive, or an sd card, or a compact flash card, or a memory stick, then there is one last way I can think of. Purchase and External hardrive, those things are worth the money, and they are easy to use. Transfer whatever files you want from your computer to the Ex hardrive via the usb port, then shut down your computer, disconnect the ex. hard drive and hook it up to your ps3 directly through the usb port, turn on the power and the ps3 should be able to read the ex. hard drive, just transfer the files the same way you would with a flash drive.

There is a feature on your PS3 to create a backup for your HD. It is under system settings and you can back it up from there. You will need to make sure that your external HD is formatted correctly (FAT32) or it will not read once you connect it to your PS3 via USB.

I was thinking of getting a portable hard drive to connect to my playstation 3 (to watch movies etc) and as they usually get their power via the usb cable I'm not sure if this would work on the ps3
If this will work any tips or recommendations would be happily received

Thanks

Answer
Yes, I have a 500gb ext hd that stays connected to my ps3. I have all my music and movies (divx) that I listen/watch using my ps3. It's a lot better now because I used to have a laptop connected to my hdtv. Getting an internal one is good too but carrying around the ps3 would be a little too much imo. I like to share files w/ friends so the ext hd is the way to go!

*edit - to the post above - in order to access your files on the ext hd you go to music/movies>go to the ext hd name [hit triangle] (i think) to bring up the "display all" or "information" options and hit display all. the folders you already have on your ext hd will show up and you can open up whatever you want from there. i was a little confused too as to why whenever i highlight my ext hd name nothing popped up but you have to display all.

i got a WD my passport essential se 1TB, portable hard drive.my probable is that i connected it to my ps3 but nothing shows ups. it works fine when i connect it to my laptop. I also got another WD my passport 500g and that works fine on both. what can i do to fix it for i can be able to view it on my ps3.

Answer
Format it as FAT32. If it's not formatted as FAT32, then the PS3 won't read it. Also be sure it's USB 2.0 (NOT 3.0) as the PS3 can only properly read USB 2.0 devices, not 3.0 even if it's 2.0 compliant.

A great tool for FAT32 formatting is Fat32Formatter. Just download, unzip and run, no installation required.

Where on PS3 menu can I find my USB expansion drive?

I have a seagate expansion portable drive with a load of movies on it that I can connect to my laptop. I would like to view them through my PS3. When I plug it in through the controller USB port I cannot seem to find where I can access the USB. Does anyone know if it's possible?

Answer
the usb drive will always show up on the top iof each sections menu , videos are accessible in that menu , photos in its menu etc.
the ps3 can only read external hard drives thast are formatted in fat32 , if yours is ntsf format the ps3 will not even know it is plugged in so you probably have it formatted for ntsf for pc use

if it were formatted properly the ps3 would show it as a usb drive and then you would press triangle to display the files on it

How could I transfer files from my PC to my ps3 wireless?

I want to transfer files from my PC to my ps3 wireless because it gets tiring transferring files back and fourth using a portable hard drive..could anybody please tell me how I could transfer them from my PC to my ps3 but without usb cables..like I would like to transfer them using the internet.

Answer
put your PC to share media in Windows Media Player..... they must be connected under the same wireless router.. Enable your ps3 to search for Shared media PC. YOur computer must grant access to this "unidentified device", grant it. and you will be able to transfer music photos and videos.... But I strongly prefer transfering using USb's its much much faster and you dont have to worry of your internet's speed or signal strength
