my pse is 80 and and my portable hard drive is 80. so im good on space. how can i back up my ps3 onto it thoe?

There is a feature on your PS3 to create a backup for your HD. It is under system settings and you can back it up from there.You will need to make sure that your external HD is formatted correctly (FAT32) or it will not read once you connect it to your PS3 via USB.

i have a WD 1TB portable external hard drive... when i connect it to the usb port in my playstation3.. the playstation doesn't see it? any reason why? or a way to fix it?

You have to format it to fat32.
