Why won't or how can i play movies from my external hard drive?

I have a seagate 500 GB external hard drive and movies music, etc. on it and when I go to my friends house to play movies, they won't play or either they just only play audio. Does anyone know how to fix this or tell me how to get them to play on a Macbook laptop?

No, I don't know the solution but I have a suggestion. - There is one movie player that plays absolutely every format known. VLC, it may work for you.

which program can I use to recover deleted 3dm files from an external hard drive?

I accidentally overwritten everything that was saved on my Lacie external hard drive a few months ago. I've managed to recover most of my files using Disk Drill, but can't seem retrieve 3dm (rhino) files. I'm on a mac, and most retrieval programs for mac don't seem to support that file extension. Can anyone help me? Thank you!!!

additional info:
-I have not saved anything on the harddrive since, have not touched anything thats in there now.
-I've already ran a couple of retrieval programs through it (will that compromise my chances?)
-I'm on a mac
-the harddrive is Lacie
