Not. Those are the software systems, not the computers. Example of a computer is MacBook Pro 2.4GHz quad-core i7 2012.

All HDDs are the same for your questions, so this answer is for all HDDs in the world including your LaCie.

A: The HDD has nothing to say about what you copy. The format and the driver control that. The Apple driver for NTFS format is read-only, so you have to add software, such as Paragon NTFS For Mac, to enable write (means copy, move, rename) to the HDD. Alternately, you could format the drive for "Mac OS Extended" and buy either "MacDrive" or "TransMac" for Windows to be able to use it, but the Paragon NTFS For Mac software is cheaper. You could expand your brain a bit beyond initial cost and realize that the Mac format (used with OS 10.2 or later, even more so with OS 10.3 or later) is more efficient and more resistant to fragmentation than any format from Microsoft. Alternate plan would be install HFSExplorer in Windows to enable read (copying) from Mac formatted volumes, create two partitions on the HDD, when in Windows add files to the NTFS volume, and in OS X add files to the Mac volume. Then you can copy from NTFS when in Os X, and copy from Mac format when in Windows -- total cost of extra software = zero.

Apple's backup software is "Time Machine". That needs "Mac OS Extended" format. I don't use any backup software with Windows, but I would bet a dollar to a doughnut it needs NTFS format. To use one HDD with both backup strategies, create two partitions on the HDD, and format two file systems.

3). Does it come with backup software?
The HDD? Ask the maker.

4). Is it USB Bus powered?
I have never heard of any HDD case without a USB port except a NAS. If your Mac has Firewire 800, get a case with that connection also, because it is much faster than USB. LaCie shows a graph of speed comparison for USB and FW, but it is bunk, because in real-life use, USB never performs up to its theoretical maximum specs. It takes 2-3 times as long to copy a 1 GB movie file through USB 2.0 as it does through FW 800.

Oyen is an awesome drive. I have two and I am super impressed with them. They fit in your shirt pocket or purse: it is super quiet and very fast;doesn't heat up much at all in use. I use my personal one for photography, and I know I will never fill them up; they can be partitioned very easily; come with FREE online backup service when your away from your physical HD back up; they are about the size of an iPod,and work off of only one wire on your USB drive. Recommendations for portable hard drives?

I have used USB sticks for everything. Now, I am running out of space on my 16GB one, and since the prices for 32GB and 64GB USB sticks are close to bigger drives, I might as well buy one. USB sticks are small and convenient, but I don't want multiple USB sticks to fiddle around with.

Most prices I've seen online are £60 for 500GB and £80 for 1TB. I might not need 1TB memory, but is it a worthwhile investment?

Does anyone have recommendations for the smallest / cheapest / reliable / fast portable hard drives?

1TB is quite a lot of space. My recommendation would be, if you don't think you can fill it up now, then get a smaller drive. Hard drive prices are currently inflated due to the floods in Thailand, but once pricing returns to normal, you can expect prices to keep going down. By this time next year, I wouldn't be surprised to see prices down 30% - 50% per GB. Buy what you need now, and upgrade when the need arises (usually for a much lower price). That's true for hard drives, and it's true for pretty much all electronics.

If you want high reliability, I'd recommend you build your own. All you need is a hard drive, and an enclosure. By selecting your own hard drive, you get to cherry-pick the best hard drive you can afford, and pair it with an aesthetically pleasing enclosure.

My recommendation would be a 750GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue. It's a 2.5" laptop hard drive, so the form factor is very portable. It's also very quiet, and very reliable. Western Digital is almost universally regarded as the best current HDD manufacturer. The Scorpio Blue is also reasonably fast (It's WD's mid-range laptop model), and should easily max out a USB 2.0 connection.

If you insist on getting a pre-built external hard drive, I'd recommend the Western Digital Elements 500GB portable version. It's a little more expensive per GB than the prices you stated you found online, but is well worth it. I have been using my old 640 GB model for the better part of 4 years without a single problem. The reviews on Amazon are almost all positive.

yes you can you just need to format it to the right file type fat32 or ntfs more likely the later
put it in to the laptop and use your os disk to start instaling then use the hardware from the portable case to copy your data from your old hard drive

Providing you have sufficient space then no problem. You can do it without partitioning the drive by making five folders. One for each computers backup.
