What type of portable external hard drive should I use for my laptop?

I am looking for a Portable External Hard Drive for my HP laptop. I need one that has at least 2tb of memory and is fast but affordable (preferably under $150) I'm looking for a good reliable brand too. I just don't know where to start. If it helps any I have Windows 7.

I have a 2.5 and a 3.0 TB for my two laptops from Western Digital and they have worked flawlessly. One of my laptops is Windows 7 and one is Windows 8. I don't work for Amazon (retired postal service) but I really like Amazon for deals. Check them out and do some searching. I think you will find what you need.

My 1TB Seagate External Portable Hard Drive is not showing up in my Windows 8 computer?

So what I did first was to check the diskmgmt.msc but found out that there's a disk with the file system called "RAW", 931GB total storage and 931GB available storage which didn't help me at all. After that, I checked the device management which showed something called "WPD FileSystem Volume Driver" under the "Portable Devices" menu and I'm sure that that thing is my Portable Hard Drive since it disappears as soon as I unplug it and appears again as soon as I plug it back in. But no matter what I do, it still doesn't show up, even after I reboot my computer... It's been working fine until today and I've never formatted it before. Please help!!!! There are lots of important data in there.

Appears to be a gaming laptop of some sort. My guess is a very expensive Dell as they still use the low end 10/100 ethernet even in some of their more expensive systems.

You can uninstall software you won't use, and get a startup manager software to not start what you don't need. Defrag the HDD, add CCleaner software maybe.

Laptop gaming never reaches the level of tower PCs, and Lenovo Y580 has GTX 660M which is a little better and was selling it cheaper than your Dell [as I guess], but, it will do what it does. Your gaming should be a little better than NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450, and below NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti.

would formatting and installing my own version of windows void my warranty?

I have an HP computer but it's gotten to the point where a factory restore is needed, but i never made backup disks. So i'm just gonna backup my more important documents in a portable hard drive and reinstall windows. Would this void any part of my warranty?

The warranty would cover the hardware not software..



PS..
A pre-installed OS would normally include a factory image in a recovery partition , this image is used as source to create and burn a factory image to DVD/CD..at any time with included manufacturers burning software..

As long as the system will boot you can burn factory restore discs ,most systems can also factory restore from partition if the the hard drive is functional and windows is curropt.

How can I access the files on my Seagate 500 GB external hard drive on my new Windows 8 Laptop?

I have used my external HD with my prior computer which was Macintosh and it worked fine. But in the past when I have tried to use this HD with Windows computers it does not let me access the files. Now that both of my Macs aren't functioning I went with a Windows 8 Laptop, and I am trying to access my HD files on this Laptop. I see in the control panel that the Laptop is picking the portable hard drive up, but when I goto my computer to look at my HDs the computer does not see it, only the laptops internal drive. I am not as familiar with Windows as I am with Mac so I think maybe I am doing something wrong.

a mac supports many filing systems
windows only supports fat32 and ntfs and afew other variants not worth mentioning

that means if you formatted the drives on a mac, chances are you used a MAC ONLY
filing system.

you can usually BOOT a Linux Live CD and MOUNT the drive as linux can see enough
filing systems to get at the stuff(usually) then you can copy off the files onto a windows
formatted partition on the pc.

I'd done some looking around on Newegg, Bestbuy, and Amazon for prices on portable external hard drives. The prices look affordable, but the customer reviews put me on edge. Some had said the hard drives (specifically the Seagate Ultra Portable 1 terabyte drive) caused their computer to crash with Windows 7. Others found the (Seagate) drives were poorly constructed and were useless in three months. What are some great drives for the prices these days?
