Any hard drive works on any computer. There are not any special "Mac drives", except as an advertising gimmickââ the drive is just pre-formatted as Mac. (Most new drives come pre-formatted for Windows XP SP2 or laterâNTFS)
As for connectig the drive, it needs connections that match your type of computer. "I have a mac os10.5 " is not really much info. The "Mac OS" thing is software, not the actual computer hardware. The software is called "Mac OS" because it is for a Mac type computer.
To learn which computer you bought, go to the top menu bar, click the Apple logo and choose "About This Mac". Then write down the processor info. Next, click "More Info" and write down the computer model and age, such as "iMac Late 2007".
This info will tell what connections you have. All older Macs that can run OS 10.5 have USB 2.0. Some have Firewire 400. Others have Firewire 800. If you don't want to determine if the computer can use a fast drive connected by Firewire, just buy thisâ> http://www.amazon.com/Elements-Portable-Drive-Storage-WDBUZG5000ABK-NESN/dp/B00CI3BISU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1391784256&sr=8-3&keywords=500gb+drive
As far as reliability, it's like if you buy a lightbulb. 98% of the time, it works fine. Occasionally, it doesn't. You should make two backups of your life, so buy a second drive. Your life is worth 150 bucks... maybe as much as 200.

this is an external hard drive meaning that it is used as a storage device which is portable, kinda like a usb drive except this one is the size of a hard drive. you can choose from laptop hard drive which are smaller and more expensive to PC hard drive which are bigger and require power from a power cord. All you need to get is the hard drive and the enclosure for it, either a laptop hard drive enclosure which is 2.5" i think or a PC hard drive enclousre which is 3.5''. But the one you apparantly chose already has the enclosure box coming with the hard driveso you're ready to go. This one is also a 3.5" hard drive since it is a PC hard drive.
