I think two Solid State hard drives that are 512gb each, that would give you pretty much what you are looking for, they aren't cheap though, in Canada that would run about $450.00 each, you can get a 1T solid state drive for about $900.00, which to me is quite prohibitive, and you need a Thunderbolt port for that one.. I would think you will pay much less for a 1T hard drive disc, it certainly wont cost even close to what solid state are, if you don't need a really fast speed you can get a range of normal plug in hard drives for not too much money...You didn't say if you had a desktop or laptop...

In my current desk top I have an extra SATA drive that I want to take out and use as an external drive for my new laptop. Before I do this I would like to completely wipe it clean of everything. How do I wipe it clean and format it to be used as purely a storage device.
I also need help cleaning up the drive my desktop runs off of as I would like to sell it. I need help getting rid of all my personal files and just leaving enough behind to run the machine, like the OS (which is XP) and internet explorer.
I do already have an external case for the drive

To format it, go to Computer and right click on the drive and click "format". Make sure it says the allocation size is set to default, and the file system is NTFS. This will remove ALL files off the drive.
To make it portable you need a hard drive enclose. This is a housing for you drive with a connecter that connects to the SATA interface and allows you to use USB, Firewire, eSATA, or Thunderbolt. They're not too expensive and easy to find.
To remove all your personal files, you could get the recovery CD/DVD from your desktop manufacturer and use it to reinstall the OS removing all personal files. You would have to "reuse" the Windows XP product key on the desktop case. This key will only work with that system. Call the manufacteurer and tell your system model number and ask them what they can do. Sometimes they'll give you the disc for free, some, you might have to pay. Make sure and ask them if the disk will REINSTALL Windows.
Another way is just to manually remove all personal files and change the settings and programs.
