Im looking into buying this My book external hard drive from walmart, I need something for my music and pictures, but files as well, ziped EXEs and what not, can i store those on there too? someone let me know please.

You can store any type of files on your Portable Hard Drive! Pictures, MP3s, Videos, Programs,....etc.

Can I transfer data to a portable hard drive from my old PS3 and then transfer it to the PS3 Slim?

You should be able to do it with a flash drive. I recently bought a 4GB flash drive at Walmart for $15 to back up my game saves. I'm sure if you can put them on the flash drive, you can access them from another PS3. I would recommend trying that. You don't even need a big flash drive, just transfer the data, clear the flash drive, then move more data.
