External hard drive not detected - Solutions?
JVJ100
My 2.5" 320GB Transcend external HDD, which I had for about a year now (and has just passed its warranty date) suddenly died on me! When I plug it in, the green "safely remove" icon appears on the taskbar, but when I open "My Computer" there's no letter drive! I tried "Disk management" and it doesn't appear there either! I tried using it on other PCs, but to no avail! Thankfully, there wasnt any IMPORTANT data in there, but still...It was more convenient than my 1.5TB 3.5" HDD which just sits on my desk all day!! At this point, i'm pretty certain my HDD is dead. But if anyone out there has any solution to the problem, please let me know!!
Answer
Have you tried it on another computer? That verifies if it's the drive or the computer reading it...
If the drive does not show up in disk management, then either it has lost it's partition information, or actually died, most likely died...
If the USB icon comes on, then the electronics in the drive may still be alive.
One final test, before throwing it out, is to take it apart, remove the drive, and plug it into some desktop, to see if it is the disk, or the interface electronics in the portable unit - the drive may still be good until you determine by this test...
