Q. how do you change for hard drive from ntfs to fat 32 on a compaq 4000 labtop
Answer
The PS3 will not format an external hard drive to FAT32 if it is already formatted to NTFS. You have to use your Windows Operating System to format it. However, some Windows OS have limitations on formatting to FAT32, so you could try using a free third party program, like CompuApps Swissknife (can be downloaded for free on www.download.com).

Upgrading PS3 Hard drive ?
el barrio
Can I do this :
Buy a 2.5" 5400 RPM which is 250GB or 320GB(any brand) hard drive to replace the original 40GB PS3 HDD ?
1)Are these steps of changing the HDD correct ? I don't want to backup game installs and themes.
1) take out the original 40GB HDD out of the PS3.
2) Insert the new HDD into the PS3.
3) Put the original 40GB HDD into an enclosure to make it an external HDD.
4) Plug the external HDD into the USB port of the PS3.
5) Copy all my data like musics, photos and game saves from the external HDD into the new HDD after it is formatted in the PS3.
The PS3 will format the new HDD after it is inserted into the PS3, right ?
What's the difference of using quick format and normal format ?
What will the size of the 250 GB and 320 GB HDD available on the PS3 after being formatted ?
My 40GB only shows 37GB.
2) Do I need to perform the system update again ?
My PS3 system version is 2.42.
3) Does my PSN account remains in the PS3 ?
I don't want to create a new PSN account.
4) Do my settings in the PS3 remain the same ?
Answer
Ps3 will not read another Ps3 hardrive in an external enclosrue, os steps 3-5 will not complelty work.
-Basically back all the stuff you do want (gmae saves, music, movies etc) before taking out hte 40GB. ( maybe do it witha flash drive and copy it over in little bits)
to back up hit triangle, and either copy or copy all to external device. the game saves are in Game - saved data utility- gamesaves.
-swap over the dfrives( be careful with the blue screw, it rounds off easily)
-boot up Ps3
-format it(it may ask for latestlfrimware so download it of the Sony website and put on a flash drive/new 40gb portable hdd)
-copy fiels back over. same as backing up, but go to external device n hit copy - to ps3.
2. yes, the main PS3 OS is in hte Ps3, but hte firmware needs to be on hte HDD
3. its not on the Ps3, but you jsut sign in wiht your exisiting account.(so remeber your password :P)
4. settings go back to factory defualt.
oh n to format hte 40GB to a usuable FAT32 hardrvie use Compu Swissknife ( windows can only format to a max of 32gb)
any more info jsut email i recently upgraded my 40Gb to 320gb, so the process is pretty fresh in my mind
