How do you connect an external hard drive from a PC to a Macbook pro?

I had a PC, but that computer crashed this past fall. I then bought a Macbook Pro and I was wondering how to connect the external hard drive that had all of my pictures on it from the last seven years to my new laptop. I do not know how to connect an external hard drive at all and since it was installed into my old computer for me I do not have any directions or cords or anything of that sort.

look for an External hard drive enclosure that will connect that drive to USB or firewire or better yet Ethernet (put it on the network) They usually sell these at Best buy or any computer store.

Why does it take so long for my macbook pro to recognize my external hard drive?

I have a 15" macbook pro running OS X 10.5.8 and a Western Digital 1TB external hard drive. The majority of the time, it takes several minutes for my mac to recognize the device. Why does it take so long and what can I do to make it recognize it faster?

I believe it is indexing it before it will show up. I don't know how to make it quicker.
