Answer
Why are you getting such a huge case for an ATX motherboard? The 200R is big enough: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139018

I don't see why anyone would need a 6 TB hard drive. I would get rid of the external hard drive and get a 1 TB internal and use that extra $200 for a bigger monitor.

I would also skip the sound card unless you plan on getting a 7.1 surround speaker setup.

All the parts do fit.

It just got onto my laptop yesterday and I could tell it was a fake antispyware program because I've had one like it before, but I don't know how to get rid of it! I tried searching through my computer to find it and delete it, but It couldn't find it. Someone please help me get rid of this! I can't even go onto any webpages because it'll pop up as "Internet Explorer alert. Visiting this site may pose a security threat to your system!"

Answer
follow the others instructions and see if that works. sometimes it does not which leads to the final option of reformatting the hard drive. reformatting the hard drive will wipe it clean of everything which is something you should consider doing if the other options do not work.

before you reformat make sure you back up your files. if you do not then your files will be wiped completely and you wont be able to get them back. i would suggest you use a hard drive enclosure since it allows you to access just the files like a portable hard drive instead of running it through the operating system. i use a bt-300 by topmicrousa that i would highly suggest you check out.

after you back up your files, reformat the hard drive then recopy the files.

if you have any other questions feel free to send me an email and ill do my best to help \(^_^)/

How to make different albums on iPod touch 4g?

Sophia

I want to make another album on my IPod but I don't know how to and I don't want to use the computer to make it I want to find a way to make a album on the iPod without the computer. Is it possible? And if it is how???

Answer
Origin of Ipod: The iPod is a line of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple Inc. The first line was released on November 10, 2001; its most recent redesigns were announced on September 12, 2012. There are four current generations of the iPod: the ultra-compact iPod shuffle, the compact iPod nano, the touchscreen iPod touch, and the hard drive-based iPod classic. Like other digital music players, iPods can serve as external data storage devices. Storage capacity varies by model, ranging from 2 GB for the iPod shuffle to 160 GB for the iPod classic. The devices are controlled by the Samsung ARM and the Apple A4 CPUs.

I have the Mac OS X 10.7.3
2.3 GHz Intel Core i5

I am planning to get a portable external hard drive within the $200 budget mainly for video editting on Final Cut Pro and After effects and for storage.

I am so confused with fireware and 3.0
3.0 seems to be a good thing but will my macbook be compatible with it or will it function as a 2.0?

Please recommend me with the products with links. Thanks!

Answer
Final point is that Firewire 800 has wider bandwidth than USB. Also, USB never performs in real life situations equal to the spec.

Your computer (if it shows "MacBookPro8,1" for the Machine ID) is Early 2011, so it is USB 2.0. You cannot connect any USB 3.0 device to that. Your fastest option no matter what we think about USB 3.0 is still Firewire 800.... or Thunderbolt.

I also suggest an aluminum case for better heat dissipation. See links below.

Most reliable and affordable external hard drive for my Macbook?

rastafari7

Hello. I am running low on space on my computer and was in need for an external hard drive. Which brand and model is great in performance, size and price? I'm looking to spend no more than 100 dollars. Thanks!

Answer
I would advice you to purchase a Western Digital My Passport Studio, which is available in various hard drive capacity sizes. This hard drive will be pre-formatted for Mac OS X and supports not only USB, but also FireWire 400 and 800. You can format any hard drive yourself for Mac OS X, so that is not a requirement, it is only handy that it has been done for you. A hard drive which supports FireWire 800 however is great, as the transfer speed will be much higher than with USB or FireWire 400. Most external hard drives only support USB, which is slower than FireWire 800. The drive is also very portable and includes an indicator light showing you how full the hard drive is. Last but not least, the casing of the drive is non-shiny silver, just like the silver is on a MacBook Pro or Mac Mini for example. ;-)

I don't want to spend more than $100 on either.

Answer
A good internal Hard drive for the PS3 would be any 2.5 inch SATA hard drive.

Here's some links to a hard drive that can be used Internally for the PS3 that's under $100 dollars:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9208971#Specifications

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/500917-REG/Western_Digital_WD2500BEVSRTL_250_GB_Scorpio_2_5_.html

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/484050-REG/Western_Digital_WD1600BEVSRTL_160_GB_Scorpio_2_5_.html

The brand name for the PS3's Internal Hard drive really doesn't matter, but personally I would go for a Seagate or Western Digital Internal Hard drive.

Any portable USB External Hard drive should be fine, but here's some links that I found:

Is there an yway to trasfer programs recorded on my dvr to a harddrive?

C R

i have one of those Motorola DVRs that you can get with Comcast in my house. how do i transfer programs that i recorded to a portable harddrive using the usb port in the from, and play them back of a computer?

Answer
Hi C R ,

The USB is for "future use" and isn't activated.

You can do it with DVD Xpress.

With DVD Xpress you can transfer your video to your hard drive and then edit it if you desire. DVD Xpress comes with basic video editing software. I got mine at Sam's for $59.95. They are cheaper now. You can look at one & read about it here - http://www.usb-ware.com/ads-dvd-xpress.htm

I saw a newer model at WalMart recently. It was the DVD Xpress2. I canât remember what it cost.

You connect the composite output of your DVR into the DVD Xpress and connect the DVD Xpress to your computer via a USB cable.

How could I make my ps3 detect my portable hard drive?

rosas_jess

I have an 80gb seagate portable hard drive and works with usb 2.0, but my ps3 80gb wont detect it..it will only detect my small ipod and my psp..any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
You may have to press triangle more then once depending on the hard drives file structure

Simply take a jump drive, external hard drive, etcâ¦hook it up to the USB port on the front and then you--

Goto to view under music, or video, or photos, scroll down to the drive you've hooked up hover over it then push Triangle(notX) then select display all (view all)(press X) and it will show everything on the jump drive or external harddrive. Then either listen to or view the music, video, photos or copy to the ps3 hard drive directly.

If you have a psp you can also use that to move files from pc to ps3.

Answer

I can recommend the WD drives. Although the site says that the WD Elements is a portable drive, it is better suited to sitting on a desktop (The power connector is a bit flimsy IMHO to be continually connected and disconnected). The WD Passports though, although a bit more expensive, are well worth it to be portable.

100GB may be a bit too small, I have a 320GB external, and it is full with mostly video. For average compressed video, take 1GB to be 1Hrs worth of video. Uncompressed would be more.

Are you planning to do so by yourself late at night? in a dark area with no public around? while listening to loud music on an Ipod? with your hood up so you cant see people approaching you from behind? and excess cash spilling out of your wallet?

If so, better keep it at home.

Otherwise, don't pay attention to hysterical reports about crime in Melbourne.

Answer
Backup DVD or Copy DVD I always use this DVD Copy software. It copies personal home video in the original quality.
I download the software from:
http://dvd-video-converters.com/dvdconverter/1click-dvd-copy.html
Unbiased reviews and side-by-side comparisons of the DVD copy give you enough information to research the ins and outs of a particular product:

Copy DVD on mac:

Is it safe to take a desktop computer on a plane as a carry-on item?

yahoo 360

I own an Alienware X51 and it is very small and portable (slightly taller than an Xbox 360 with similar width and length for comparison). Thus I can easily carry it in a medium sized backpack, however there are three things I am worried about:

A) Will I be prohibited from taking it on the plane by TSA? I know laptops are not an issue but would a desktop in the x-ray machine pose as threatening as it is somewhat uncommon?

B) Assuming the plane ride itself is relatively smooth, how easy is it to damage the components of the computer? I am planning on wrapping it in padding before placing it in the bag. I'm worried about small bumps and turbulence resulting in baggage colliding and my internal hard drive and other components being damaged.

C) If TSA says I must place the computer in the cargo hold, how prone is it to damage assuming I wrap it well and provide plenty of padding inside a suitcase?

Answer
Desktops are fine in carry on luggage assuming it's within your airline's carry on allowance. At the TSA checkpoint, you will be required to place it in a separate bin for x-ray (like a laptop) where it will be x-rayed and cleared to go.

Since you will be the only one handling your computer, how safe it travels is up to you. Don't even think about checking it in if you want it back in one piece.

firewire, or usb 2.0? or is an external hard drive even an option? and what is more compatible with pro-tools, if anyone knows of a great external HD, please let me know... thank you

Answer
I use a OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro 500GB connected via firewire 800. You should pretty much just always use Firewire 800; 400 if you don't have an 800 port. I'm curious to see what the transfer speeds are like with USB 3.0.

I personally don't record to an external drive but almost everyone else I know does and I haven't heard of anyone having any problems. I know some people that record with a USB 2.0. Not sure what the results are. I'm guessing they're all right though as I really haven't heard complaints.

Hope this helped,
KDecka

EDIT: I did partition my system drive so that I'm not writing on the same drive that Pro Tools is on. Don't do that.

Is it safe to use my hard drive when I have a virus?

twb785

My computer is currently being attacked by Security Tools, Antivirus Vista and Your PC Protector. I'm pretty sure there's no fixing it at this point and I was going to clear the hard drive with the recovery disk. I have a lot of important work, school, picture and music files on my computer that I really don't want to lose. Would it be safe for me to get these files off my computer with my external hard drive or would the virus also infect that?

Answer
Those are rogues and the best way to get rid of them is to use either Malwarebytes or Hitman Pro. You don't need to reinstall Windows at all. And you don't need to go into safe mode either, as one person suggested.

You should also think about installing a different antivirus and for that I would suggest Norton 2010.

I am looking for a good and portable external hard drive. I like something affordable and as stated can travel with me everywhere? I had a LACIE but it got destroyed. So something like palm side. Maybe a 500MB or something like that. A external which would last me a couple of years like my LACIE did.
What is the best one to get?

Answer
I think you mean 500GB and to be honest all of the hard drives on the market are good so get one that is the cheapest.

But as a fan of Western Digital I'd have a look for one of those but that is just personal preference.

How do you eliminate Hard Drive noise from mobile DJ setup?

Chris

Im using a laptop, m-audio usb pro, 2 150w powered speakers. The problem is the hard drive spinning is coming through the speakers. I know about using good cables, crossing wires properly and grounding. Does any one else have any handy tricks they have discovered? Thanks.

Answer
What do you mean by M-Audio USB Pro?

The M-Audio Fast Track Pro Mobile USB Audio/MIDI Interface? Or the M-Audio X-Session Pro USB MIDI DJ Mixer Controller?

If it's the mixer controller & you're using the soundcard that came with your laptop, you need to upgrade your soundcard.

Sound Cards
http://pleppy.blogspot.com/2007/03/sound-cards.html

Also you didn't mention what hard drive you are using, so I suspect you might be trying to use your laptop's internal hard drive. Live DJing with a laptop requires using a good portable hard drive.

Whenever you are dealing with an audio drive, be it recording or just playback, these three things are what should instantly pop into your head.

1. First and most importantly, USE FIREWIRE.
2. You want to make sure it has a spindle speed of at least 7200RPM with an 8MB or larger cache.
3. If you can, look for "Oxford 911" chipset.

Most computer based DJs have two portable hard drives & make an extra copy of their hard drive. That way if you have a problem with the hard drive you're using during a gig, you have a back up hard drive.

BTW
JFYI for future reference { Cars & Transportation > Car Audio } is not a very good category for asking questions about DJing.

In the future try using one of these categories for better responses to your DJing questions:

{ Consumer Electronics > Home Theater }

{ Consumer Electronics > Music & Music Players }

{ Consumer Electronics > General - Consumer Electronics }

{ Computers & Internet > Hardware }

How much memory is my computer using?

best external hard drives 1tb 2012 image

Rubbersoul

I know this is a n00b question, but I want to purchase an external hard drive for my computer so I need to find out how big a hard drive I would need. What is the normal amount of memory a 14in laptop would use? I have an HP Pavilion dm4... Thanks!

Answer
You are much more than a noob, you are completely uneducated in computers, no offense....

***********************************************
A hard drive IS NOT MEMORY!!!!
Your RAM is memory.
***********************************************
Any size hard drive can be used as either an internal or USB external storage device.
You can buy any size external hard drive you want, according to how much stuff you think you need to store on it. As they are relatively cheap nowadays, I recommend getting at least a 1TB (1024GB) external hard drive for your file storage needs.
*****************************************************************
As far as the normal amount of RAM (memory) in a 14 inch laptop, that can vary by type, brand, specs, price, etc.
It can be anywhere from 2GB to 8GB or even 16GB of RAM.
*******************************************************************************
*******************************************************************************
REMEMBER THIS:
A hard drive is just permanent storage space for operating system and personal files, like a closet or chest drawer, if you want. The bigger it is the more stuff it will hold. In your case, the bigger the hard drive, the more files you can store on it.
Here are a 3.5 inch desktop hard drive and a 2.5 inch laptop hard drive.
http://www.hidinginsanity.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/bothformats.jpg

RAM - an acronym for Random Access Memory (aka memory, system memory or operating memory) on the other hand, is where your computer temporary stores system and program files as well as all other stuff needed to run the operating system and any program or application you are using at that moment.
RAM memory gets constantly erased and overwritten during normal computer operation and is dumped (emptied out) when the computer is shut down.
Here is how RAM (memory) looks like:

Is this a good gaming desktop/desktop in general?

Just wondering if this is real good?

Answer
Honestly, that looks pretty excessive and pricey. If you're not already going to you might want to look into building you own computer with some of these. There's no way you're going to need all of that except for Battlefield 3 and Borderlands 2, you might want to look into 1tb drive (If you need more a $70 external is the answer, 12 gb of RAM, move to an intel that does 3.1 ghz overclocking but then get a motherboard with two pins and use 8 cores instead of four, screw the sound card, you just need the cheapest integrated one you can get your hands on, Look into a 560 ti graphics card it's going to be way cheaper and you won't notice any differences.
These changes will probably save you $500 and you won't notice any game differences because anything over 64 fps will look the same to you.

I have a couple of folders on my portable hard drive that I want to be able to lock with a password. They contain customer details and some of my company financial information. I have them on an external hard drive so I can transport them between my work and home computer. Ideally I would like to lock them with a password.
Can I do this through the computers own security settings, or do I need to download some software?

If I need to download some please suggest what would be best.

Thank you.

Answer
i would use encryption this way your safe no matter what
Cypherix is a simple, easy to use encryption software that creates an encrypted virtual drive, provides password protection and hides any file or folder ensuring file encryption, automatically. Its powerful encryption ensures that only you can access your data.

The free, fully-functional Cypherix LE version uses a 128-bit implementation of the powerful Blowfish algorithm while the registered versions Cypherix ME, Cypherix PE and Cypherix 7.2 offer a choice between a 448-bit implementation of Blowfish and a 256-bit implementation of AES (Rijndael).

Cypherix creates a volume (vault) that can only be accessed with a password. This volume stores files in the encrypted form. Once mounted, the Cypherix drive is like any other drive you normally work with. It functions like any other drive (C: or D:) on your computer. Just drag and drop any file into the Cypherix Vault. It is automatically encrypted. It's that simple! Cypherix vaults can only be viewed, accessed, browsed or modified by the user who has the key to open it. At other times, the files are invisible!

The Cypherix Drive is actually a file. All data is stored encrypted within this drive. When mounted using the Cypherix interface with your password, it appears to Windows as a Disk. Consequently, unless it is actually loaded using Cypherix, it is not visible under Windows or DOS for that matter. There are no files or any information visible.

All information is stored in the form of encrypted files in a special 'volume' that disappears when you password protect it, thereby locking your files and folders. Any kind of file can be dragged and dropped into this volume, rendering it totally inaccessible by anyone but you. Thus, even if your "vault" (volume file) is stolen or downloaded by anyone, it is not possible to read your data. Using encryption in Cypherix, it would take more than the age of the universe for all the computers in the world working simultaneously to decipher an encrypted file.

These volumes can be transported (moved/copied) to any location (another folder, another drive or even to a CD). Cypherix combines ease of use with state-of-the-art technology to ensure total security, zero learning curve and maximum convenience! Cypherix offers true on-the-fly disk encryption making sure that absolutely anyone can use it effectively! What you get is foolproof, hassle-free, unbreakable computer security.

Cypherix runs on all versions of MS Windows (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows 2003 Server, Windows XP 32-bit/64-bit, Windows Vista 32-bit/64-bit) as a special Windows device driver operating on an implementation of the Blowfish algorithm in Cipher Block Chaining (CBC) mode with a block size of 64 bytes and conforms to international standards

I formatted my computer and now can't access my encrypted files. anyone know how i can hack into them?

i had all my files saved on a portable hard drive. but now my computer won't recognise them as my settings have changed.

Answer
If you formatted your hard drive with encrypted files on it, they are gone and there's no way to get them back. If you have encrypted files on some other external drive, you cannot hack into those (at least, not in your lifetime). The way encryption works is to take two large prime numbers and factor them; security is provided by the fact that they cannot be factored out.

There's no such thing as WEP2 file encryption. That's a method to encrypt your internet browsing sessions over Wi-Fi.

Can a portable hard drive save XBox 360 games?

I wanna add more memory to my Xbox 360. Can I install games from discs onto a portable hard drive connected to my Xbox through the USB port.

NOTE: I'm not going to put Xbox Live stuff on the portable hard drive. I only want to use it to install games from discs.

Answer
Not possible. The 360 can only stream media like music and movies from an external drive through a USB connection. It cannot store game saves or content on it.

How to I save music from a Portable Device onto my Xbox 360 Hard Drive?

Emma

I saved all of my music onto a USB portable hard drive, and connected to my Xbox 360 (250GB). It's letting me play this music, but I was wondering if it was at all possible to actually save it to my Xbox Hard Drive so I can create playlists etc.? Thanks (:

Answer
Not possible.

If you want to put music on your hard drive, you have to rip it from an audio CD.

Is a “portable” external hard drive for storage-and-carry only, or can it be used alongside your computer?

I want an external HD to store my music library and wondered if a portable version (such Seagate's FreeAgent Go) was any worse or better than a regular external HD like a WD myBook or LaCie. Thanks!

Answer
Just consider the usage of the external hard disk. If you plan to use it as intensively as an internal disk, you should check out the transfer rates.
This varies with disks and especially with the interface used: USB 2.0, eSata or FireWire.

What is the best portable 500gb external hard drive for HD video editing?

I have a Macbook Pro i7 and I need a portable harddrive that will keep up with my video editing so I don't drop any frames. I don't know if there is a big difference between a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro 500GB USB 2.0 7200 rpm vs LACIE Rugged 500GB 7200 RPM USB Firewire 800. Any ideas or suggestions?

Answer
Go Firewire. It will have at least twice the data throughput rate as the USB 2.0 drive. RPM has little effect on external drives, as the data interface (USB or Firewire) is almost always the limiting factor.

I have a Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition. I want to backup my Mac, but I don't want to delete the backup files from my PC. Is it possible to backup 2 hard drives and keep them on the external hard drive?

Answer
you will need to partiton the hard drive

this turns one physical disk in to two disks that the computer sees

windows vista can do this

email me if you need help doing

WARNING partitioning can cause data loss so if you are doing this you need to back up your backed up data (sounds irish i know but if you dont do it and you lose data youve only yourself to blame) before doing the partition

Can I use (1) external Hard drive to backup information from a Mac and a PC?

Peter A

My wife uses a PC and I use a Mac with an interest in purchasing a external hard drive to back up our stuff. Is it possible to have two computers on different platforms share one external hard drive?

Any recommendations for external hard drives? Seagate? Western Digital?

Answer
Mac OS X and Windows understand seperate file systems, what you need to do is partition the hard drive, half NTFS (for windows) and half ext4, or whatever it may be. You should be able to do this via windows and MAc OS X, if you can't GPARTED will do the job for you.

I run windows vista and the itunes files are slowing down my computer, I didnt have a problem until I added all the music. Can I use a flash drive, if not what type of drive do I need?

I am pretty sure its the music files, I've got a pretty cheap laptop, so it doesnt have a ton of space anyway and it doesnt have all the bells and whistles.

Answer
I had the same problem. You can upgrade your laptop, which is a good idea anyway. Add more RAM, it makes a world of difference. Anyways, get yourself a portable hard drive, depending on how much music your got. I got myself a 1TB hard drive, but I throw movies on there too. It's not too expensive, cost me about $100. Throw your music on there if you'd like, but the problem you run into is with the ITunes app. It's kinda a pain in the ass but it will speed up your PC.

Can I install a game in an external hard drive and play it?

John P

Hi! I just want to ask, since my pc has 6 gb only, I was wondering if I can buy an external hard drive and install my game there and play from the external hard drive? Thank you!

Answer
Short Answer: Yes, with a few rare exceptions and one caveat (condition). But, it may not perform as well as you'd like.

Long answer: Most games can be installed on and run from an external hard drive. The exception is when a particular game does not allow you to designate your own installation path. I will say that I have only encountered this once before, so it's quite rare, but still within the realm of possibility.

Now for the caveat:
Since software installation varies depending upon the installed hardware, you will only be able to play the games on that computer. Even though your hard drive is portable, your games are not. Since this solution is intended merely as a means of adding additional storage space, this probably doesn't concern you that much.

And finally the bitter pill:
Game performance will suffer. How much? Hard to say, but think of it this way: A USB 2.0 connection tops out with a transfer rate of 480 mega bits per second (mbp/s). Fast as that may seem when you're offloading pictures from your camera, it just can't stand-up to the transfer rate of an internal hard drive (anywhere from 1,200 to 2,400 mbp/s). By using an external storage device you effectively create a bottle-neck, you're only as fast as that USB cable, and the rest of your hardware is almost certainly faster than that.

As such, I would urge you to consider installing a second hard drive in your current computer. It doesn't tie you down anymore than the external drive does, and the difference in performance will be considerable. It's not the easiest thing in the world if you haven't done it before, but it's nothing a couple hours of research and a few well phrased questions can't get you through.

Final Notes: Unless you want to play StarCraft (total installation size of 90 MB) off of your external drive an internal second drive would be a far superior choice. The drive itself would need to be mounted inside your computer chassis. One of the open 3.5 inch drive bays would be ideal, but even a 5.25 inch bay can be converted with $10 worth of hardware.

Best of Luck!

Feel free to follow up with another question.

EDIT: Here's a link to an online guide explaining precisely how to install a second hard drive, should you choose that route...

I have two WD My Book 3TB External Hard Drives. My old computer broke and my new one is a Compaq. My old computer would run just fine if I left in my hard drives but the Compaq won't boot past the load screen if the hard drives are plugged in. They work just fine if I plug them in after it boots up. Is there a way I can set things up so I can just leave them plugged in without issue?

Answer
In your BIOS check your "boot order" and move "usb" down. I prefer cd - first, hard disk second and the rest really don't make much difference.
