how portable hard drives work on Data Hard Drive
how portable hard drives work image

smcmayi

Can I run applications off a portable hard dirve? Which portable hard drives should I buy? I want to run Dreamweaver, Net Objects Fusion or WebPage Maker from a portable hard drive.

Answer
You Can not run all of those programs on a portable drive. Check out http://portableapps.com/ for a great repository of Portable applications you can use.

- you can use any portable drive but you will want one that;
*has enough space [this should not be a problem as you can get USB Sticks fairly cheap nowadays]
*can interface quickly [ you will want USB 2.0 for the fastest load times however the computer must have USB 2.0]

Hope this helps

portable hard drives for windows 8 image

I am looking for a nice, portable, slim laptop or netbook with windows 8. The main features I want is good battery life, portable and would be able to have an external Blu Ray player to it. I will use it as a computer for school and a way to watch my blu rays anywhere. What would be the best laptop for that?

Answer
If you are looking to buy a laptop mainly for school, then I would suggest Acer Aspire V3-571G

It got
3rd Generation Intel Core i5 Processor
1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT630M dedicated graphics
15.6 inch LED-backlit widescreen display
4GB DDR3 Memory
500GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Windows 8
USB 3.0 Port and 1 HDMI Port

The best feature of this laptop is that it got 3rd gen core i5 laptop with 1 GB DDR3 graphics which will be very helpful for running any software or any latest game without lag, plus it got 2 usb 2.0 ports, usb 3.0 port and hdmi port. And the best part you can buy this for just $529.

http://bestlaptopsunder500hub.com/best-core-i5-gaming-laptop-with-1gb-dedicated-graphics-under-500.html

OR if you want a cheaper option then go for Acer V3 which got AMD A8 quadcore processor, 512MB AMD Radeon HD 7640G Graphics for just $439.

Answer
Appears to be a gaming laptop of some sort. My guess is a very expensive Dell as they still use the low end 10/100 ethernet even in some of their more expensive systems.
You have GT 650M
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html

Game Booster
used to be freeware and I think now is trialware. It shuts unused processes.
You can uninstall software you won't use, and get a startup manager software to not start what you don't need. Defrag the HDD, add CCleaner software maybe.

Laptop gaming never reaches the level of tower PCs, and Lenovo Y580 has GTX 660M which is a little better and was selling it cheaper than your Dell [as I guess], but, it will do what it does. Your gaming should be a little better than NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450, and below NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti.

My friends just gave me their external hard drive with MANY videos. I also have a DVD Player (Portable). So I was wondering whether or not there's a way for me to transfer the AVI files to the DVD Discs and watch it on my DVD Player. Is there a possible way I can do this? When I tried it last time, the DVD Player wouldn't read the DVD-R Disc. Thanks for your answers everyone.

Answer
you can try avs video converter, it is able to burn video files to personal DVDs, convert video, split, join, edit, rotate, apply effects, transfer, copy! Convert video between almost any formats: AVI (DivX, XviD, etc.), DV AVI, MP4 (inc. Sony PSP and Apple iPod), WMV, 3GP, 3G2, QuickTime (MOV, QT), SWF, DVD, VOB, VRO,MPG, MPEG 1,2,4, MOD, DAT, VCD, SVCD, ASF, ASX, MJPEG, H.263, H.264, Real Video (RM, RMVB), DVR-MS, MKV, OGM, FLV, etc. you just input avi movies for burning, you can view this guide about how to burn movie to dvd step by step,

Can I switch back to Windows from Linux?

ShoopDaWho

After I learnt that I cant run .exe files on a portable hard-drive, this is pretty much a ditch out attempt on Linux. Can't use Wine unless someone makes an idiot proof guide for me.

Answer
This may sound completely obviouse but exe files are windows file and the best way to run a windows file is in windows. For some reason silly people want to say they are using linux but are really spending there whole time trying to make every app form windows work in wine. If you want to try linux then cut yourself off from windows and see what linux has to offere. If you want to use a window program then boot up windows and use it. Wine is a terrible program and not only works poorly but keep people from actually really giving linux a propper try.

I recomment for Windows people that want to learn about linux to just try the liveCD and get comfortable.

If they are more serouse about linux I recommend then dual boot windows and linux so they can get used to linux but still have a fall back if it's needed.

I have run linux for years now and have never needed any program from windows in it. So if you remove the wine options from your mind they you can move to finding the proper linux application that you should be using.

But the dual boot is good because sometimes there is just a time you may need a windows app and the best way to use a windows app is in windows. I even do it to play games some times. Not that I don't enjoy the linux games but I still have windows ones to.

I just purchased a portable hard drive for my computer and was wondering is there a way to like torrent Xbox360 games to the hard drive then connect the hard drive, via USB port, and open up the games to play on my Xbox360??

Answer
the only way to play off a hard drive is the xbox hard drive, which is hidden or something(like when u pull the tab from a video tape so it cant be corded on by the vcr) but u can unlock the hd with some mad program. you need to look it up on google. even then im pretty sure the only games available u need to torrent and then burn to dvd. then to get them to play you need to "flash" your cd drive which means install new dodgey firmware to the actual cd drive which requires you to take it apart and plug in into your computer then run some dos program (so if u are bad a coding?). once all this is done u need to run some shadow client thingy when you play it so xbox live dont find out about it and ban your account and console, yes they can ban your actuall xbox 360 byt he mac address or something. so its a lot of work to play dodgey games on your xbox. and really you need to google it to uderstand i only gave you a taste.

I just bought a portable hard drive and am looking forward to installing programs on it so my computer's hard drive will be less cluttered. Does anyone know how to do this? I want to install my computer games, music media organizer, and various others onto it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Answer
When you connect the protable hard drive you will need to format it with your Windows software or the Portable hard drives manufacturers CD which came with it. Then once it is formatted all you will need to do is connect it via the USB cable and then it will install itself. You then can go to MY COMPUTER and see it listed there. Then any file or program you want to store on there or save on there can be easily transfered/stored by left clicking on the file (highlight it) and then on the top of the open window go to left click EDIT, then either COPY TO FOLDER or MOVE TO FOLDER, (then another window will pop up with all you drives and folders) you will then find your PORTABLE HARD DRIVE in there LEFT click on it and it will save to that hard drive. You can also make a new folder once you open up the Portable Hard drive in the popup window so you can save different things in different folders. Hope this helped..

Can anybody suggest some good portable hard drives to me?

I am buy a portable hard drive with a memory capacity of about 300 to 500 GB and want it to be rather slim.

I have no clue about hard drives and don't know what I need to look for or what some good brands are.

Answer
you will find many hard drive brands available. All are slim and sleek unless you go for 1 TB of space and all. But generally 500 GB Hard drives are slim in a case. You can check out the prices of the Hard drives and the various brands of hard drives with their prices on ebay.com and you can also order from there if shipping doesn't take a lot. More importantly you can see the pictures of hard drive and then from local market you can buy the particular hard drive if u wish to.

Best hard drive for Mac video editting and storage?

portable external hard drives for mac on Samsung Hard Drive Recovery - Hard Drive Data Recovery
portable external hard drives for mac image

iseegrace

I have the Mac OS X 10.7.3
2.3 GHz Intel Core i5

I am planning to get a portable external hard drive within the $200 budget mainly for video editting on Final Cut Pro and After effects and for storage.

I am so confused with fireware and 3.0
3.0 seems to be a good thing but will my macbook be compatible with it or will it function as a 2.0?

Please recommend me with the products with links. Thanks!

Answer
Final point is that Firewire 800 has wider bandwidth than USB. Also, USB never performs in real life situations equal to the spec.

Your computer (if it shows "MacBookPro8,1" for the Machine ID) is Early 2011, so it is USB 2.0. You cannot connect any USB 3.0 device to that. Your fastest option no matter what we think about USB 3.0 is still Firewire 800.... or Thunderbolt.

I also suggest an aluminum case for better heat dissipation. See links below.

Is my External Hard Drive Compatible with my Mac Book Pro?

Bella

I ambushing a Mac Book Pro but I have a Samsung G2 Portable External Hard Drive. Would it be compatible with my new laptop.

Answer
Hi there!

The skinny on your drive is this: Yes, the drive will work as an external hard drive and you can store files on it like any other drive; however, the Included backup and password protection software that coms with your drive doesn't support Mac OS.

Therefore, if you want to backup your Macintosh to this particular drive you'll have to reformat the drive to Mac's Extended Journaled format so that Time Machine (Mac OSX native) will recognize the drive: your drive is originally configured for Windows and, for one reason or another, Time Machine canât reformat the drive automatically, so you have to format it yourself first.

Also, if Time Machine is not your thing, here is a list of alternatives to the Macintosh's backup program: http://www.icreatemagazine.com/general/top-5/top-5-alternatives-to-time-machine/

Hope this answers your question.

how do i get pictures from my digital camera on to a CD?

I ask the

Answer
Several methods:
1) Copy the images from your camera's memory card to your computer hard drive, then burn them to a CD.

2) Buy a dedicated device which allows you to simply insert your cameras memory card into it, which then burns it directly to a CD. Examples would include Micro Solutions RoadStor or Jobo's Apacer portable CD burners.

3) Or you could do what my parents do: Take their camera/memory card to a store like Costco, have prints made and have the contents of the card burned onto CD by them for a minor fee. For people who don't want a technical hassle, this is a great solution.

I have a macbook from 2006. It no longer gets updates, and I am starting to need something better. I want another mac, but do not want to buy something over $1400 including a mac protection plan. I am not sure whether or not I want a notebook or desktop. I only really want to do word processing and check my email and go on the internet. Please help! Oh, and if it helps i also have an iPad 1.

Answer
An iMac desktop is the best option for you and the usage you described. Since you have a portable (your iPad), you don't need to invest in a laptop. iCloud will allow you to keep both devices synced easily. With a desktop computer you'll be getting the most processing speed, memory, and storage space for your money (as opposed to buying a Macbook Air). I would also recommend that you wait to purchase your new computer. The last release of the iMac was on May 3, 2011. Seeing as the iMac usually upgrades around every nine months, the new iMac should be coming out very, very soon.

Here are the specifications of the iMac.

21.5-inch iMac for $1,199
2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
1920 x 1080 resolution
4GB (two 2GB) memory
500GB hard drive
AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB

+

AppleCare Protection Plan for $169

The best thing to do is go into an Apple store and talk to a specialist to get a final opinion. Make sure to mention to them that you have a portable device already.

Hope this helps!

Para is not informed.

Seagate makes a portable drive called Goflex Satellite that works with Android Tablets, iPads, iPhones and Android phones. Answer
you're trying to get a deleted file from external drive, but no OS installed. I do not think you can retrieve a deleted file using system recovery.

what you can do, there are free file recovery softwares which you can download and run. good for you that it is external harddrive, just plug it to you PC and run the software.

Would there be any problem if I moved my iTunes folder to an external hard drive?

Elsie

My iTunes folder is getting too big for my laptop's internal hard drive, so I bought an external hard drive (a WD My Book Elite - 1 TB). I'm thinking of going into My Computer and moving (NOT copying) my iTunes folder to the external hard drive. Will my iTunes still work that way? I don't want to lose my music.

Answer
There is a good video tutorial here:

http://lifehacker.com/5261172/move-your-itunes-library-to-an-external-hard-drive

It explains how you can use iTunes to copy the files so you will have the correct library locations. Once you have copied them correctly you can delete them from your laptop.

My old Dell laptop is broken and now i'm looking for good ideas to do with them. I don't want to spend too much money...
It does not work. Motherboard is fried.

Answer
A Dell Inspiron 600m.

No but seriously... there are a lot of fun projects you can attack with one.

1| You can build a WiFi router out of it. (One of my favorites, impresses people... somehow.)

2| You can turn it into Real-Time Anti-Virus. It will work by becoming a proxy between your main computer (or network) and it intercepts all of your downloads, scans them, and then send them to you all transparently. If the file is dirty, you can have it delete it, send to you with a warning, or even attempt to "clean" the file.

3| You can build yourself a portable media center (i.e. Plugs into TV/Stereo system and immediately plays Movies/Muziks. You can even set it up to display an interactive menu on the screen which a smartphone controls giving you unlimited options.

But all this relies on the laptop functioning at least enough to run. It will require the following things to work:
A working power source (battery or AC adapter)
It will require a working processor.
it will need to have at least 64MB(tiny amount) of memory (RAM, not disk)
A working basic input/output system or unified extensible firmware interface.
Finally it needs to be able to interface with something somehow, so Serial port, Ethernet port, working keyboard, etc.

It does NOT need:
A working screen/monitor
A hard disk drive*
A CD/DVD-ROM
Wireless card
Windows

Link for 1| http://rbgeek.wordpress.com/2012/05/14/ubuntu-as-a-firewallgateway-router/
For 2| and 3| just google those things with the words "linux" at the end... lol.

Whats the best malware program to use to get rid of malware?

The Top Malware Removal Tools of 2012

Norton Antivirus 2012

Norton has long been a big name in computer protection. The newest edition of the Antivirus program makes it easy for malware to be stopped. This even includes protection against exploit programs that are often skipped by some other removal tools. You can even get real time information on any threats that the program stops as they come into your computer.

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus

Bitdefender has a program that is noted for having some of the industryâs best malware detection rates. It uses scheduled scans to find malware and works quickly to remove old malware files from a computer. It even uses quick scans that can be used in the background without causing your computer to slow down.

Kaspersky Antivirus 2012

The 2012 edition of Kasperskyâs flagship program has some of the best malware removal rates in the industry. It works on all major operating systems including Windows 7. It also uses detailed descriptions of individual malware programs to give you an idea of what is being removed from your computer.

F-Secure Antivirus

F-Secureâs program has a strong malware detection rating. What makes it particularly valuable is its customized scanning feature. This is where you can adjust the program to scan in specific spots in the computer including spots where you feel there might be some malware in that area. This could be used to control trouble spots quickly.
Avast Pro Antivirus 2012

Avast is another popular name in malware removal. This program has support for not only computer hard drives but also for flash drives and other portable hard drives that can link up to a computer. It makes for an easy to use device that is convenient and works well for anyone who is interested in getting a good program to scan items.

What is a good price for this Mac, and Macbook Pro vs. Macbook Air?

portable hard drive vs desktop on Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB vs Transcend StoreJet 25M3
portable hard drive vs desktop image

Dayna

So I have a Macbook Pro, but I'm getting some money and looking to upgrade.
Here's what I have:
13" Mid 2010
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
8GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB graphics
and I have mountain lion, office mac, and iphoto, i movie, and garageband.
250GB hard drive
So I bought this Macbook about a year ago for $700, what's it worth now?

Second question: Should I upgrade to the Macbook Pro retina, brand new macbook air, or keep mine?
It bugs me that I cant watch 1080p video, so the idea of a nicer display really appeals to me. The macbook air doesnt play 1080p, but it is slightly better than my current resolution.
The other reason I want to upgrade is that i have intel core 2 duo and I'd like i5 or i7. I play games on my macbook and for the most part they run great, but it could be better.

Lastly: this december I'm joining the Air Force and I'd like a portable macbook that's gonna be updated and reliable for a long time. I just want to buy the newest one and not worry about upgrading for a while, if you get what I mean. I also want a long battery life, and a decent amount of RAM.

It's so tough because I want the nice display, fast graphics, along with RAM and a good battery life. Portability isn't a problem with either though, their both so small.

Please don't recommend anything other than Apple products. I hate windows with a passion and samsung too. i realize they make good products but im just not a fan. Thanks guys!
I forgot to add my main uses for it are:
Email
TONS of web surfing, often with many tabs and tons of downloading
Gaming, but light games. nothing super intense. (minecraft)
Streaming video (in HD whenever possible) from youtube & netflix
typing essays/papers/email (not much, as i graduate very soon)
@Doro I definitely agree that OSX is a dumbed down Linux, but I like it that way. I'm mostly an apple fan because their stuff is sooo reliable and I cloud all my crap with my phone so easy. Plus, before the disaster that is windows 8, I had a toshiba laptop with windows.....wait for it......VISTA. You can kinda see my hate now right? And I definitely can't afford a $3,000 laptop, but after selling my current macbook (maybe $600) Ill only have to pay about $800 to get the lower 13" macbook retina. The macbook air would only cost about $500 more. (i have the education discount)

I have a job that pays $10 an hour and nothing to spend it on besides gas.

Answer
Apple fanboy, huh?
I agree with Windows being crap. The only justifiable reason for Windows is hard core gaming.
Period.

Mac OSX is in fact just a dumbed down version of Linux for Dummies (NO OFFENSE).
Tried it, never liked it. Linux is sooo much better.
Ever tried Linux?

Look at my cool Linux desktop, looks better than a Mac and is faster, safer and 100% free (the OS and any software or app I ever need):
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk177/Doruletzul/MintSystemInfo_zps4cb5ba27.png
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk177/Doruletzul/Screenshot-8_zps614e2a3d.png

As far as your question, both Retina and non-Retina 13inch models of Macbook Pro under $1,700 only have integrated Intel HD graphics, I hope you know that...
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro
Only the 15inch models have a graphics card, the $1,800 non-Retina and the $2,200 and $2,800 Retina models.
The Air Force mus be paying pretty good nowadays, if you can afford to spend up to $3,000 on a laptop....

Last, but not least, even a cheap $300 laptop with integrated Intel HD graphics can play 1080p streaming video (Youtube, Netflix, HULU Plus, etc).
I know mine does, and I paid $280 for it at Walmart + another $50 after market, to upgrade RAM from 2GB to 8GB.
Wiped of Windows 7 as soon as I got home and installed Linux. It runs like a dream.

Don't bother paying for a Netflix subscription. As soon as you ship overseas, you won't be able to use it anymore, unless the Air Force somehow provides you a US registered IP for Internet connection.

What are the specs I need to look out for when buying a portable hard drive? HELP REQUIRED...please!?

roaring_le

Like the minimum transfer rate...what does it have to be?
Should it have a fan?
Is USB more easier to use then Firewire?
What is the current maximum gb available for a portable hard drive?

and any other important thingd to look out for....

By the way I only need a portable hard drive because I am running out of space on my laptop and need some where else to store my videos, photos, music and word documents...but was wondering if I have a WMA file saved on my portable hard drive would it be as easy as 'plug and play' to play it back or would I need to transfer the files back on to my laptop hard drive to be able to watch, hear or see the file???

Thanks

p.s...Could you also tell me whether there are better quality and reputable brands then other when buying portable hard drives and does price really matter?

Answer
Hi there..

There is plenty of good brands available in the market nowadays and they are pretty good in quality and reliability. The question is now how much space do you need, the physical size of it ok for you and what sort of connector you're after. Price is relatively almost the same (if you are a good shopper/bargainer you might save some $$$) so remember to shop around first..

Size / capacity:
You may find harddrive size ranging from 160Gb up to 600Gb these days maybe more. It is up to you which one to get. Too small is not enough, too big you might lose too much data when it fails. Between 250 and 400 is perfect and recommended, and you can easily buy another one in the future as required.

Physical size & fans?
Two types: 2.5" and 3.5". The first one is usually used by laptops and can be converted into a portable one. It will cost you a bit less since all you need is to get a smaller and cheaper enclosure box to put the drive in. It uses usb2 and no fancy fans so it's cheap. 3.5" drives are commonly available in store, dimension is almost four times as big. Enclosures for this normally have a built-in fan which requires external power. If you would leave the drive plugged in and running all the time, the one with fan is recommended, otherwise 2.5" hdd would be ideal.

USB vs Firewire:
Definitely go for usb but make sure it is version 2 (usb2) as it offers faster transfer rate and it's more commonly used and available in newer laptops and desktops. They are the same when it comes to ease of use. There is also another type of connection available which allows you to share with other users in your place by plugging it into your home router (uses RJ45/ethernet).

Regardless of the types, portable drives can be accessed as easy as an internal ones. Plug it in, wait few seconds to get it recognised...all yours. Accessing documents, viewing photos or playing music and videos (all types) shouldn't be an issue since it is logically treated as an internal drive. However when disconnecting, if you have other than XP make sure you first remove it from the system before unplugging the cable to prevent damaging the actual device.

heh...hope this helps...

Minecraft isn't that demanding. You should be fine.
Below are the system requirements for World of Warcraft. Looks like the laptop would be good enough to run it but personally I would upgrade the RAM to at least 8 gb.

What would be a good affordable laptop?

In a year and a half I am going to college.
I am not very computer literate.
And would prefer not to get into debt buying supplies.
I would like to know what laptops would be best for a college student (a student that has a hard time finding even the simplest stuff on a computer.) with low funds.
My price range: $200 - $600.
I would prefer this laptop to be able to access Wi-Fi.

Answer
As you said that you are a college student so you must need something extremely durable and portable. and as far as brands are concerned the best ones which are durable and highly tested are TOSHIBA and HP.

I will suggest you two most popular laptops of todays market;

1. First one is Toshiba Satellite L755-S5271 with 15.6 inch led display highly popular because of its beautiful finishing and performance.

It has the following specifications:

Intel Core i3-2310M Processor 2.1 GHz, 3MB L3 Cache
4GB DDR3 1333MHz (max 8GB)
640GB (5400 RPM); Serial ATA hard disk drive, 8x SuperMulti DVD drive
15.6" diagonal widescreen TruBrite TFT display at 1366 x 768 native resolution (HD)
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium; 5 hours, 42 minutes Battery Life

How do I access my USB drive..it says I don't have permission?

portable hard drives 3tb image

RollX2015

I just bought a 3TB external drive and it works fine at home. But when I take it to campus..where I actually NEED it..it says I don't have permission to access it.

I am obviously not the administrator at my school's computer and I have tried every which way to configure the blasted sharing at home and on campus..HELP!!

Answer
Most likely your school has disabled external media permissions. You're out of luck.

Obviously you will get in trouble for this, but install a portable OS onto your drive, and boot from your external hard drive by selecting your device at the BIOS. That way, you have your own computer set up for school, you will be an administrator, as well as be able to do whatever you want locally (If they have internet filters that's a different story)

does a laptop and a cpu have the same type of hard drive/disk?

Justin

i have a an used cpu the thing that i know is that its hard drive has 100+ gb so i was you know wondering if i could take it out and put it in my laptop , cause its low disk space starting to get on my nerves. so is this possible?? sorry newbie here

Answer
First off, I don't recommend doing it yourself if you're asking this question. Secondly, no, they are not compatible. Laptop HDDs are smaller and have a slightly different build from PC HDDs. SSDs are the same, but if you want to change the HDD, you know you're going to lose all of your data unless you make a backup on a Portable HDD (Hard Disk Drive) which makes changing it kinda redundant since you now have another drive on which you can store data which is either equal, more or just a few GB less! Think about it. I have 5 Portable Hard Drives (1TB, 3TB, 2TB, 1TB, 320GB), all more than my Hard disk (1TB). if you really want to, check out eBay for laptop hard drives. You might have to check whether your laptops hard drive is IDE, SSD or SATA, depending on how old your laptop is.

Providing you have sufficient space then no problem. You can do it without partitioning the drive by making five folders. One for each computers backup.

When purchasing an external hard drive, what should I be looking for?

best external hard drive solid state image

Lisa

My computer is getting low on memory, so I would like to get a external hard drive to use for storing my computer games I mainly play sims2 and I know it takes a lot of memory. I really know next to nothing about computers, so please explain in detail. I have tried asking the sales people questions, but I swear most of them know less than me. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Basic things to consider:

1. Type of external hard drive: Solid-state drive which using micro chip (no moving parts to break - more expensive) or Hard disk drive which is completely the opposite (moving hard disk inside and can literally crash when moving hard disk touches - less expensive)

2. Capacity: I would get at least 2 TB of storage

3. Brand: I suggest Maxtor brand

should i get an external hard drive or USB memory stick?

Emily the

I write novels as a hobby (I know I'm a total geek!) and I was wondering what would be better to keep all my stuff on either an external hard drive or a USB memory stick.I know Externals hold more but USB sticks are more convenient because of their size? What should I get?

Answer
It all depends on how much data you are trying to store, and how you want to use that storage.

If you are only writing your books via a word processor like Microsoft Word and you want to be able to easily carry your work with you around in case you might want to show someone, then yes an 8gb or so flash drive should suit your needs.

If you are planning to use this devise as a backup drive for your files and you intend to store more than just word files (such as images, movies, music, etc), you will need more space, and an external hard drive is more practical at that point.

If you want something in between, go for one of those small Western Digital external solid state drives. Something around 60-80GB would give you plenty of storage, in a package that is pocket-sized.

Yeah, I know I am probably not using the correct words, but is there a way that i can make a tower of internal hard drives be kind of like an external hard drive, except with more storage? I know that I have heard of people doing it, but have never found the process? Any ideas on what kind of transfer cords or storage I need for this idea?

What do I need to pull a hard drive out of a laptop and use it as an external hard drive for a new one?

Victoria

I have a dell laptop that, after only a year, burned up. I've taken it to a number of different places and the cost to fix it would've been greater than the cost of a new one. I want to pull the (fully functioning) hard drive out of the Dell and use it as an external hard drive for extra storage on my new laptop. Anyone have any recommendations as far as the type of case to use for that?

G.O.A.T.

Hello,

I am looking for an easy way to sync my Macbook and Mac Mini. They both are connected via wireless network, but I am wondering if there is a way to simply click a button and sync the two computers as opposed to using the file sharing capabilities.

Also, I have a portable external hard drive as well. Is ther a program I could install on the portable HDD that would enable syncing? Remember, the program would have to be compatible with OS X.

Thanks!

How to retrieve files on a WD external hard drive with a mac.?

I used a portable hard drive to back up some files from a PC. Now I need to retrieve those files using a mac. when I try to open the hard drive it tells me that it is not readable. How can I make this thing work so that I can get my files.

Answer
Answer for Windows 7 and OS 10.6.8:

The drive volume has errors. Windows doesn't care much about errors. OS X does, so it won't mount. Repair it on the Windows system like this....
-- Right-click the drive volume in "Computer".
-- Choose "Properties".
-- Choose "Tools".
-- At "Error checking", click the "Check Now" button.
-- Put a check mark (tick) for "Automatically fix file system errors".
-- Put a check mark (tick) for "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".
-- Click the "Start" button.
-- Click to unmount.
-- Wait.

To do this in OS X....
-- Download and install either NTFS-3G or SL-NTFS (latter for OS 10.6.7 or later 64--bit).
-- Restart.
-- Connect the drive. At the alert message, click "Ignore".
-- Open Disk Utility.
-- Select the external volume ("Volume" is the partition name, probably faded appearance).
-- Select the "First Aid" tab.
-- Click the "Repair Disk" button.
-- Wait.
