Mac, Linux and Flash?

Austin W

I'm going to buy a mac, the mid 2012 13 inch, non retina. i have been finding some stuff out and its been raising questions. one i cannot store anything on my current computer so its all on an external HD. I'm running ubuntu 10.04 so one issue, will mac OS X mountain lion read the hard drive at all? I found that all the file types are compatible except .odt and .mkv which i can convert all of them and I'm almost finished I just found an app for the .mkv videos. Also i watch a lot of anime.

So here is question 1 : will may favourite sites like youtube, anime44, anime shipuudden, fanfiction.net and anime seed all load quickly and will i be able to stream the flash videos?

Question 2: will I be able to open my external hard drive and copy everything to the mac without having to format and loose all 200GB of my precious data?

Answer
The answer to both questions is yes. If the drive is formatted as Ext2/Ext3 then these utilities will do the job:
http://osxfuse.github.com/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/fuse-ext2/

You can also just mount the drive across the network and copy data that way.

Should I go with internal or external Hard Drive?

Jake

I am talking about the late 2012 Mac mini (2.3 ghz). I can't decide wether I should install a second drive inside the machine or just go with a USB 3.0 External Hard Drive. The second drive will be mostly for time machine backups and maybe some other stuff. Thanks!

Answer
For backups it's always a good idea to have them physically separate from the machine. In case something happens with the laptop or it gets stolen, the internal drive would be lost too.

Portable encryption software for external hard drive?

USN Brat

Is there a portable piece of software that encrypts your entire external hard drive? (Or at least password protects it) I want to be able to use it on all computers that I use, but be prompted to enter a password in order to access the content.

Any help is appreciated.

Answer
"TrueCrypt is a software system for establishing and maintaining an on-the-fly-encrypted volume (data storage device). On-the-fly encryption means that data is automatically encrypted or decrypted right before it is loaded or saved, without any user intervention. No data stored on an encrypted volume can be read (decrypted) without using the correct password/keyfile(s) or correct encryption keys. Entire file system is encrypted (e.g., file names, folder names, contents of every file, free space, meta data, etc). "

What portable hard drive would you recommend (preferably 1TB)?

Jordan

I am looking into buying a portable hard drive. I study Graphic Design at college and a Hard drive would be useful. I currently have a USB which is only 4GB which I feel won't be enough.

I have some factors to consider

Reliability: Fast and easy to use and doesn't experience regular problems.

Portability: Easy to travel with.

Durability/Lasting factor: Doesn't brake easily and lasts for a long time

Memory: As I said before preferably a 1TB (3.0 USB hard drive)

Price: I am looking around the price of £50-£100 for an external hard drive.

I have had so many mixed reviews on external hard drives I'm finding it difficult to make a firm decision. All Answers will be appreciated but the best answer will be the one that best fits my criteria :D

Answer
iomega is very reliable. it also has a warranty that comes with it (every external hard drive does).

Many students at my school get WD (Western Digital) because it's cheaper, but many of them had issue with it (it's not connecting, it crashes easily, etc. etc.)

Iomega works well. It doesn't overheat like some of Seagate does.

Seagate overheats and not many student use it.

G (sold at Mac stores) have pretty good ratings. But I don't know of many people who have this, and not many ratings online (last time I checked).

Online at tech forums, people rate and crit which external hard drives works best and is most reliable. You can also check Best Buy and compare each hard drive with one another. You should also go into the hard drive company's website/forums which will most likely have buyer's ratings. You should check those.

When I did that, Iomega had best ratings. It also runs on Firewire, which is far faster than regular USB which most hard drives still rely on. When you work with large files, it's best to have firewire. Saves you time.

Best hard drive for Mac video editting and storage?

iseegrace

I have the Mac OS X 10.7.3
2.3 GHz Intel Core i5

I am planning to get a portable external hard drive within the $200 budget mainly for video editting on Final Cut Pro and After effects and for storage.

I am so confused with fireware and 3.0
3.0 seems to be a good thing but will my macbook be compatible with it or will it function as a 2.0?

Please recommend me with the products with links. Thanks!

Answer
Final point is that Firewire 800 has wider bandwidth than USB. Also, USB never performs in real life situations equal to the spec.

Your computer (if it shows "MacBookPro8,1" for the Machine ID) is Early 2011, so it is USB 2.0. You cannot connect any USB 3.0 device to that. Your fastest option no matter what we think about USB 3.0 is still Firewire 800.... or Thunderbolt.

I also suggest an aluminum case for better heat dissipation. See links below.

Which external hard disk to go for?

Nikhil

i am searching for external hard disk and came across two external har disks:
Seagate STBX1000201 1TB Expansion USB 3.0 Portable 2.5 Inch External Hard Drive -
and
Seagate STBU1000201 1TB Backup Plus USB 3.0 2.5 Inch Portable Hard Drive

1st one is Bus powered ( i dont know what is its meaning)
but both hard disks seems similar to me.

Please guid which one to go for?

Answer
You should be good with the first one because it is cheaper and the second one only has a few more features including a Thunderbolt drive that only works on Macs and special PC's. So you should go with the cheaper one. Hope this helps.

Mac Portable Hard Drive Help?

h8thecause

I recently bought a SimpleTech portable hard drive. Its a 160gb if that matters. I am working on trying to backup my music by dragging and dropping it on there, but when I plug it in and try to drag, it does not allow me. When I view the info for the portable hard drive, the sharing and permissions says: "I can only read". How would I fix this?

Answer
Check whether the hard disk has "Write Lock". If it is so make sure it is not write locked.

Make sure that the Hard Drive is not formatted as NTFS. Mac does not support writing data to a NTFS volume. Just right click the mounted volume in Finder and select "Get Info". In the Info window check for the "Format:". In case the format is NTFS, it shows "Windows NT Filesystem". [ http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/attachments/maccar/40138d1172094097-using-external-hd-between-mac-pc-picture-1.png ].
If it is so, your Mac will not allow you to write data to that volume.

There are 2 solutions :
1. Make Mac write data to NTFS volume : Install 3rd party NTFS support for Mac. Softwares like "Paragon NTFS" [ http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ ] allows you to write data to NTFS volume.
2. Reformat the hard disk to Mac Compatible format : This will require you to erase the entire data present in the disk. You can use Disk Utility to reformat the hard disk. If you are not sharing it with Windows PC, you can format it with format as "HFS+" (referred as "Mac OS Extended" in disk utility). In case you intend to share it with Windows "Fat32" will be the format I would recommend. Remember Fat32 does not support files larger than 4GB.

I would recommend the second solution.

Can I use a portable hard drive?

portiarayl

The hard drive in my computer doesn't work, so I have to buy another. Can I just buy an external one or do I need an internal one?

Answer
Since your internal drive is connected using a SATA connection and an external is connected via USB an internal hard drive works faster so it's recommended that you get an internal hard drive to install your operating system and other applications on. External drives are usually for file storage. Also your BIOS will most probably have a problem booting from your external drive as it looks for an internal drive to boot your operating system from and it's your operating system that allows you to connect your external hard drive using the USB drivers.

So no, it's very unlikely that you'll be able to get by with an external HD alone.

What is the best portable 1TB hard drive?

tinker

I need a 1TB hard drive just to back up my files (mainly movies and TV shows). I was looking into the Clickfree C6 portable hard drive but the reviews weren't great. Which hard drive have you used in the past or recently that you think is the best? Thanks!

Honestly to make this easy, here are some steps you can follow, since I believe this to be the better of the 3 mainstream external 2.5" drives (Toshiba, Western Digital, and Seagate).

1. Why bother with the software in the first place?? just reformat the drive, or delete the software. Sure it is a bit annoying having 40 gigabytes taking up space right out the box, but is that really the only main source of concerns for this drive?

2. Now for the USB cord. out of the multitude of variations of 1tb usb 3.0 drives I have run and tested, every manufactuer has just about the same length of cord. If you want a longer cord, and or are wondering how you are going to power this drive other than with the supplied USB, then why are you buying this particular external HDD? this model is not for you if you are NOT an on the go type of person. what I mean by that is, if you do not lug your external drive around, why dont you go buy a powered 3.5" external HDD model for the same price as you would this one and have twice the space?

3. As far as the construction of the drive goes it is solid. I have tested the Toshiba 1TB 3.0 as well as the Western Digital 1TB 3.0, and my opinion is that Toshiba and Western Digital were too concerned about how slim and compact they could make the case of their external HDD, which has resulted in may more failures of those particular brands than I have seen from Seagate. Small shocks, such as light drops and accedental shock is a killer for the Western Digital as well as the Toshiba more than the Seagate models I have seen. Yes I know that there are about 3 or more warning labels stating the these drives should never be hit, moved, droped, abused, etc... but If it WERE to happen I have noticed that the Seagate construction has had a better chance from failing due to these certain cercumstances than the other brands I have tested and seen.

4. If there is any con's about this drive I will say that I am not a fan of the two piece adapter. they should have included their USB 3.0 "Upgrade" cable with this drive and not the two piece unit that is currently supplied with it, as the upgrade cable is also a few inches longer and one solid piece. The two pieces I am referring to are the adapter that plugs into the drive itself and the USB 3.0 cable that goes from that adapter to your USB device.

5. Im not here to bag on any one company, and or promote Seagate as the best of the best when it somes to drives in general. I am just stating overall that if you are looking for a 1TB 3.0 USB 2.5" drive, then this is what you are looking for. I just thought I would post this up as I keep seeing negative reviews on this drive just because of a bloatware issue not a material type defect. hope this helps! If not im sorry for wasting you time.

how come i connect my portable hard drive in the PS3 but i doesnt not appear?

Leon

Answer
In order for a PS3 to read portable memory (External HDD, Thumbdrive, ETC.) the device must be formatted into the FAT32 format.

To do this, you can insert your portable to device into a Windows PC, open My Computer, and right click the drive. (ex: E:/ F:/ G:/), then select "Format".

Select FAT32 as the format and click "Start".

WARNING: All data on the portable device will be deleted, so make sure to back it up to the PC if you want to keep it, then place it on AFTER the format.

After this, the PS3 will easily read the inserted portable media.

any suggestions?

Answer
Mac supports different hard drive format than Windows. Windows supports FAT32 and NTFS while Mac probably different formats.

photoshop fonts and brushes, portable hard drive, and mac?

amanda

I use photoshop a lot, which has me use lots of different fonts and brushes. I don't like the thought of my mac losing space because of this. could i put my fonts and brushes on a portable hard drive, and just plug in my hard drive whenever i use photoshop and my downloaded fonts and brushes then?
okay, now i have another question, after i download it and install it, can i delete the folder downloaded? or do i have to keep it?
on my dell laptop, which is the first place i had photoshop, including the fonts that came with the laptop, in total 396. i recently bought photoshop cs5 for my mac since my photoshop on my dell laptop was installed a long time ago (photoshop 7.0) so i just installed it on my mac two, three days ago.

Answer
Update:
You could go far beyond that and still not have a space issue.
Good luck to ya and happy Photoshopping.

Update:
Once you install the font you can delete it. When you click install it makes a copy of the font and places it in your font folder so you no longer need the first one

Side question:
How many fonts do you have approximately?

Don't worry about the space used by fonts and brushes. Fonts are only a few mb at most and brushes are only a few kb.

You have so much storage that it just does not make a difference.

Also what you want to do is not a function built into the Mac os or Photoshop.

You would have to write a custom script that would create a symbolic link to the external directory that contains the fonts and another for the brushes before Photoshop loads.

Reliable and great external hard drive?

Manic

When external hard drives were first getting big, I bought a simpletech 500gb external drive that to this day has never given me a problem. Though I bought it for close to $500.
Not only a few months later all hard drives were around $100 for a TB.

I NEED more space and my girlfriend has offered to buy me a new hard drive with more space on it for christmas but she doesn't know much about drives which is how I know what she's getting me, ha.

My father bought a Western Digital 500gb Ext drive a few months ago and it was working fine until it locked him out of the drive and there's no way back in.

I read on the new simpletech hard drives and they have terrible reviews saying that they're slow or that they just stop working after a few weeks.

I've heard that many hard drives fail fast and it's rare for me to see any that are worth the money.

What is the best hard drive I can find out there that is new today that I can find at best buy or walmart or at an online store, with atleast 1TB of space, won't lock me out, and won't die on me for the next 20 years.

Thanks much
Hey Robert, the Western Digital he had purchased from Best Buy came with a hard drive alone and no CD's for installation [my simpletech didn't come with any discs as well] but it was fine and he took it back to Georgia with him and one day his computer just failed to recognize that the drive was plugged into the usb port. He tried with both of his laptops as well as mine when he came back for a visit and no computers would recognize it. After searching through forums it looks like this has happened to multiple people who've used western digital drives and the only ones who could solve their problem were the ones who said they had the cds that came with their hard drive and it allowed them to 'unlock' it again.
Others said they took theirs to shops to get them fixed and no one could help them, that they were simply locked for good and something inside the hard drive mustve screwed up and locked it on its own by accident.
So I don't trust them.

But I do have a very small seagate hard dr

Answer
have you considered using a Seagate drive?
i have one and they are really great drives it has never given me any issues just format with windows (it will prompt you to) and your good to go
they range from 500GB to 3TB for the external hard drives. the 1TB drive is 124.99 for the portable drive or 114.99 for the desktop one on Seagate's website and they sell their hard drives at best buy, walmart, etc.

Also i have a question for you:

what do you mean the Hard Drive "locked him out"?
do you mean you set the Hard Drive up with some sort of data protection software and forgot the password or some other thing like that?

Anyway hope I helped

Can i lock my extrenal hard drive with a password?

George

Can i lock my extrenal hard drive with a password?? Can anyone help me???

Answer
You can use a software like StorageCrypt to password protect external hard drives and portable USB devices. It's the simplest solution I know.

You could also look into your specific hard drive's documentation for any password protection it offers. You can usually find some freeware or in-built system that offers this function.

what is the most durable external hard disk for professional backup?

sami

I own a small business of 10 employees, with one basic server. I need a good backup plan for our files. So I thought of connecting an external drive to the server.
What External Drive do you suggest? It does not need to be portable, so it is ok if it needs power to turn and off. (are external disks with power cables more durable than those with only usb connection?)

Answer
I'd suggest something with a RAID 1 configuration. Like the iOmega StorCenter ix2 200, you can get it in 2, 4 and 6 TB capacities, and connects to your network easily, it even has a built in Cloud server. I use the 4TB one at home to back up files that cannot be replaced like photos and stuff. The added bonus of the this device is that u can also backup the stuff off site from your home if needed.

What type of portable computing device fits my needs?

Kyle

I need a new notebook computer but I would like some advice on which type of computer would fit my needs best. Currently, I have a 2TB 27" iMac, an iPhone 5s, and an AppleTV. I download a lot of music & movies and stream them to my TV via AppleTV. I was considering a 4tb WD MyCloud to store my media in a central location but not sure if it's compatible with iTunes and/or how that process works. Also, will I be able to access my media stored on the MyCloud HD with both my mac and new pc laptop?

I primarily use my current laptop for downloading and streaming movies and music, video and photo editing, and surfing the web. I want something with 15" or larger, high quality display. I need to have enough RAM to ensure streaming media is fast and uninterrupted (No buffering) but I am not sure about what I should do for a hard drive. My first instinct was to buy a laptop with a 1TB drive because I need the storage space but if I buy the MyCloud is that really necessary? I like the idea of a SSD but I can only afford a 128gb SSD. They're expensive but like the idea of it booting instantly. Is it worth the price?

Answer
The iCloud will meet your needs without any problems.

i have a vist os.
I have a few games that take up space, so i wanted to get a seperate hd for that kind of stuff and other files, so i can free up space on the laptops hd.

just need to figure out my best options for the money!

Answer
An external hard drive (hope you mean 3.5") would work just as well. If you want to carry a big box (relatively speaking - to a 2.5" portable hard drive), its upto you.
With an external hard drive, you will also have to carry the power adapter. The portable hard drive works off the USB power connection (same connection for data and power).
I would definitely take a portable one - only its generally more expensive (cost per MB).

Cheap External Hard Drives?

Where can i get a cheap portable external hard drive without buying on Ebay or Amazon etc? What is 'rotational speed'? What is 2.5" and 3.5"? My computer has 18GB Free space out 34GB, what do you recommend?

Is the 'SEAGATE 2.5" FreeAgent Go 320GB Blue External Hard Drive' ok?

Answer
If you want portable you'll want a 2.5". If you buy a 3.5" they are heavier and require a power pack.
The hard drive you have linked to looks like a good one. This one will just plug and play into your computer. I have a similar one to this (160GB) and it is great.
18GB spare is still a good amount if you are short of cash and need to save up, but an external hard drive is always a good idea to back up important data.
I wouldn't worry about the rotation speed, I think that is just to do with how fast the drive is read, but when it is only back data that doesn't matter.
Get a drive you like the look of.

I'll give you a suggestion. If you are getting the above drive buy a 'Case Logic Hard Drive Protective Case' I have one of these to protect my drive. They cost £14.99 at PC World or £8.00 at Staples. When I had my first external hard drive my daughter pushed it off the sofa and broke the hard drive so when I replaced it I brought a hard protective case for it.

What external portable hard drive is best for my Macbook and Dell desktop PC?

ddkreft88

I regularly switch from these 2 computers . My Simpletech is now giving me problems as it cannot load or read to my Mac so forget that brand. I am choosing between Maxtor, Toshiba or Western Digital. Any pros and cons? Thanks!

Answer
I'm a big fan of Seagate hard drives but that's my preference. I would look at warranties for all the products you are looking at.

Also getting a regular size drive and putting it in an external enclosure will be a cheaper option but the draw back is that it will need it's own power source.

Also with the issue with your simpletech hard drive. I would copy all data off it then reformat it. I bet this brings your drive back to life on your mac. For instructions check out here http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html

Be very careful not to format the wrong drive.

best external hard drives?

looking to purchase an external hard drive. hopefully one that is firewire 800 and 7200 rpm and also has one 1tb. i don't really want anything too expensive, hopefully around $150? does anyone know which are the best hard drives?

Answer
If you want the best external hard drive with FireWire 800, the G â drive one terabyte external hard drive is the best. It has every cable included, a huge on and off button to easily access, a strong metal casing closure, ventilation to keep your hard drive cool and it is very quiet. This external hard drive is made with durability compared to the flimsy enclosures out there that you see today.

Take a look at the G â technology G â drive external hard drive here...
http://www.amazon.com/G-Technology-External-Firewire-Interfaces-0G00199/dp/B002LITG7M/?ie=UTF8&tag=utf8-qid-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325

if you are looking for something cheaper, the next best external hard drive will be the Seagate expansion. It is pretty much a plug-and-play connectivity like the G â drive that has a USB 3.0 interface. It stays cool, quiet and the only downside is that it only has a one year warranty.

Learn more about the Seagate expansion here...
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Portable-External-STBX1000100/dp/B00834SK5W/?ie=UTF8&tag=utf8-qid-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325

What is the best portable 500gb external hard drive for HD video editing?

I have a Macbook Pro i7 and I need a portable harddrive that will keep up with my video editing so I don't drop any frames. I don't know if there is a big difference between a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro 500GB USB 2.0 7200 rpm vs LACIE Rugged 500GB 7200 RPM USB Firewire 800. Any ideas or suggestions?

Answer
Go Firewire. It will have at least twice the data throughput rate as the USB 2.0 drive. RPM has little effect on external drives, as the data interface (USB or Firewire) is almost always the limiting factor.

Can you partition an external hard-drive?

I've got a Western Digital Portable Hard-drive 300gb... and i have a macbook pro, with boot camp that runs vista as well, i have formated the external HD to work with Time machine on mac but now it won't work when i'm running windows?

Could someone please tell me a way i could use the external hard drive for both? maybe make a partition like i have on my Mac HD?

Also, i can't see the mac HD partition in windows but i can see the windows HD in mac? could anyone tell me a way to view the mac in windows that's free please?
Would be greatly appreciated!

Thanx alot!!
J

Answer
Partitioning the drive can be done either using a Linux Live CD or formatting the disc and adding partitions within Windows. As far as I know Mac OSX sees the windows partitions because Mac supports the FAT32 filing structure, however Windows has never supported the Mac filing structure and likely never will as the need for it is much smaller than its opposite. Mac needs to be able to see FAT32 to see multimedia cards used for digital cameras which are preformatted FAT/FAT32

I just bought a 500 GB portable hard drive.?

shryock86

I created a volume with truecrypt and tried putting files on it that are over 4 GB. It wont let me because that volume is in fat32. Is there anyway I can get it to change to ntfs without ruining the files I have on it ?

Answer
How to convert FAT32 Disk to NTFS in Windows Vista and XP with the Convert utility?

Back up data in the partition or drive that you want to convert, to another drive or partition or another computer system or PC or any other storage media.

In Windows XP:

Click <Start> â> <Run>
Enter âcmdâ into the text field labeled âOpenâ.
Click <OK> button
If you want to convert drive D (D:), enter the command âvol d:â in the command window, to find the volume label for the D: partition
Then enter the command âconvert d: /fs:ntfsâ to convert the D: partition from FAT32 to NTFS
When prompted, enter the volume label for the partition
In Windows Vista:

Click <Start> sphere
In the Start Menu search box, simply enter âcmdâ and hit enter.
If you want to convert drive D (D:), enter the command âconvert d: /fs:ntfsâ to convert the D: partition from FAT32 to NTFS

You can use the âconvert /?â command to bring up information on how to manage the conversion. As long as the drive or partition or disk that you want to convert is not in use, FAT32 to NTFS conversion will happen without any issues. Otherwise, the conversion must be postponed for the next time you reboot the computer system or PC. On Windows Vista start up, you will be prompted to either cancel or carry on with the conversion. The FAT32 to NTFS conversion process is fully automated and it involves a couple of restarts.Let Windows vista or XP to do the conversion.

External Hard-drive?

Hari

Does anyone know what a good brand for an external hard-drive is? Is western digital good? I am looking for a 250gb external hard-drive up to $100.

Answer
The hard disks inside are all good brands; no surprise when only six or seven companies made SATA 3.5" units. The problem is, some of the cheaper mystery brand have poor cooling that imperils the hard disk, while others use shoddy drive interfaces that have a way of failing. A Western Digital should be fine. I've never owned their externals, but have used drives of theirs going back to a 40MB stepper. Good stuff, and after Seagate's recent quality slip, perhaps the best in the industry at the moment.

For your money, you're probably looking at a minimum of 500 gigabytes such as this. I'm not even sure WD still makes externals under 500GB in a 3.5" format:

Slim, low profile, external hard drive?

steven

Running out of space on my laptop (which I use as a desktop at home) and want to link my Itunes to an external HD to free up space.

Recommendations for a slim, quality external HD?

Preferably not too expensive.

Thanks.

Answer
I know it's not a hard drive recommendation bu you should really look into hard drive caddys. they work by turning your optical drive into another hard drive slot. you obviously lose the optical drive abilities but it means you get to carry your secondary drive on the laptop at all times. I got mine when I installed my smaller faster solid state drive. I managed to keep my old hard drive rather than not use it and get a lot more usable. I found this especially useful because its easier to travel with my laptop. i don't have to carry an external drive with me which can be more fragile than a laptop. (external drives are easier to get knocked around while in use but your laptop stays more stationary) it also means I get tot save a USB port during regular use and don't need to pull out an external from my bag. also, internal hard drives are cheaper than external ones. you don't need to pay for a case.

Can I Transfer Video from my Camcorder to External Hard Drive?

Q. I have a Canon FS200 Flash Memory Camcorder, I know I can transfer video/photo from my Camcorder to my Computer's hard drive, but can I transfer the same files to an external hard drive without a computer?

Answer
Depends on whether the external drive accepts memory cards, if not you will have to connect it to the computer & drag the files into it.

Can I upload video straight from my Sony HD SR11 to an external hard drive?

Devon R

I'm planning a trip and I really don't want to bring my laptop. Is there anyway I can just upload straight to an external hard drive without a computer?
Also forgot to ask, I don't really care for the AVCHD compressed format and was curious if there was a way to stream from the camera into a different format. I'm almost positive I can't, but I just want to be sure...

Answer
Hi Devon:

Although Anthony's answer was correct in pointing out that the Camcorder's OS (Sony uses a Linux-based "smarts" inside their gear) won't talk directly to a normal external Hard Drive, there are affordable gadgets that will allow you to offload videos and pictures without having to lug around a laptop or desktop PC. (The JVC CU-VD40 ShareStation DVD burner [around $130] is one that JVC designed to mate with their Everio camcorder series -- Sony says you can burn DVD's directly from the SR-11 & SR-13, and JVC's CU-VD3 DVD/BluRay will accept the SR-11's USB 2.0 output, and might be just what you need [it's $180]. I'll look for other Sony-compatible DVD/BluRay burner model #'s and post an Update.)

Speaking of BluRay, if you are shooting in HiDef, you'll need to look for a BluRay (not DVD) burner to handle the AVCHD (H.264 codec) HD files, unless you shoot NTSC Standard Def and transfer your videos via USB or AV cable to a regular DVD burner.

One other easy option you have is to use multiple Sony Memory Sticks (or compatible 3rd-party brands of MemStick Duo -- like Lexar & SanDisk) instead of the built-in Hard Drive to save your videos while travelling. That way you can swap MemSticks or use any one of several models of flash-memory-transfer external hard drives that are designed to eliminate carrying a laptop around for archiving (similar to Panasonic's P2 memory card system for their pro-video camcorder line). You can change the recording option (Hard Drive versus MemStick) in the SR-11's menu.

Hope this helps!
--Dennis C.

UPDATE edit: Thanks for the Additional Info post, Devon. If you use either the regular AV output cable (composite video) or the Component Video output cable, you can playback an SD video stream and record or "capture" into whatever file format (QuickTime, AVI. WMV, etc.) your computer, video recorder, or gadget will handle or create. Or, you can use the USB 2.0 cable to transfer the file & "massage" the file format into a different format using a File Conversion program (search Yahoo!Answers or Yahoo Search, and you'll fine plenty of free or cheap downloads for those). The PDF "Guide" and "Handbook' from Sony cover all the steps for video outputting from the SR-11.

Answer
Buying a laptop hard drive or external/portable hard drive for someone who doens't have a great deal of knowledge could be confusing. I sincerely hope the information below will help you when deciding to buy a hard drive or portable hard drive, and will also save you some money and headaches.

ALWAYS CHECK IF THE HARD DRIVE COMES WITH THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY

Notebook 2.5" hard drives sold on eBay could either have the manufaturer's warranty, used, a new pull, sold as is, refurbished or white label. If your goal is to invest money on quality products, and mostly importantly, not be disappointed with your purchase, I would recommend you buy a product which comes with full manufacturer's warranty. What does this mean? Manufacturer's warranty starts from the date the hard drive was manufactured and NOT the day it was sold or used. Most hard drives and most manufacturers, including Toshiba, Hitachi and Fujitsu offer a 3-year warranty on the product, again from the day it was manufactured and NOT the day it was purchased. Seagate now offers a 5-year warranty on its 2.5" laptop hard drives.

WHICH BRAND SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Major brands are Fujitsu, Toshiba, Hitachi and Seagate. I personally think that the 4 companies provide excellent products. Based on my experience with the 2.5" hard drives, I think that Fujitsu's hard drives are the quietest (whisper quiet.) But again, whichever brand you choose might not matter that very much. All of the 4 companies I mentioned are really extremely reputable. It is perhaps a personal brand choice. Just make sure to pick a new product with the warranty.

DO YOU REALLY SAVE MONEY IF YOU DECIDE TO BUY A HARD DRIVE WITH NO WARRANTY?

Imagine buying a hard drive or portable hard drive without any warranty. Let's say the hard drive is really new and never used before. Remember, as I mentioned above, the hard drive warranty starts from the day it was manufactured and not sold. Imagine if for some reason or other, the hard drive fails within a short period of time. Now what? The seller is really not responsible at all, assuming that he/she stated everything part of the eBay listing. It is very understandable that the buyer might feel betrayed, but this is the reason why I am writing this guide. Saving a couple of dollars on a refurbished, white label, used, or as is hard drive, is perhaps not saving money at all. If the hard drive fails, you will end up losing all your money (unless there is some kind of warranty, either through the manufacturer or the seller.)

MAKE SURE TO CHECK WHETHER YOU NEED A SATA OR PATA HARD DRIVE

SATA is the next generation of portable 2.5" hard drives. SATA (Serial ATA) is the successor to the legacy Advanced Technology Attachment standard (ATA, also known as IDE). IDE is the older technology which was retroactively renamed Parallel ATA (PATA) to distinguish it from Serial ATA. Fujitsu has established itself as the leader in the 2.5" SATA hard disk drive space delivering the industryâs first 2.5" SATA hard disk drive in the world in January 2004. If you are replacing a hard drive, just make sure that you are getting the one you need. Check if the hard drive is either PATA or SATA.

Slim External hard drive vs Slim USB hard drive?

ed84man

I would like to buy an external hard disk drive. I am confused whether to buy portable hard drives which we can use like pen drive (no need to put it on AC supply) or the one which requires AC power supply? Will there be a problem with the data retention when i go for higher capacity like 1 TB with USB type? Please guide me if you have any info.
Thanks

Answer
I dont think there is a 1TB portable external HDD. the max capacity i have head is 500gb
anyways, i suggest go with the power one, its more stable, more reliable, more protective, higher data speed rates, higher capacity for the same price.

Is 500GB or 1TB portable/external hard drive enough for you?

Malcolm us

I'm not sure which is better, but this Black Friday, Walmart will sell 500GB portable for $39 while Best Buy will sell 1TB portable for $89.

Answer
Look at your storage past.
Do you use hard drive space up quickly? (video files and such) Go with the 1 TB.
By the way - I use pricewatch.com for shopping
In this case... 65~70 $ gets you 1TB !

I have an HP Pavilion dv6113us which only has 80 gb initially. I want to upgrade it so that it's 320 gb or higher. How would I go about doing this? How am I supposed to know what size hard drive to buy? Are they all the same?

Answer
I am almost positive you cannot, get that internal with a lap top. I would just go external if I were you. You can probably also get a non -portable external hard drive for pretty cheap at a store like walmart or best buy/

Is it possible to import Videos on Portable Hard Drive?

B.BR.

This might be a silly, common sense question, but can I import an AVI or any other video formated video on a portable hard drive. Say, for example, I have shot a film lasting 40 minutes and I convert it to avi format and then can I send it to my portable hard drive and play it on others pcs? Can I convert a TV footage recorded in mpeg-4 and convert it or not convert it and send it to my portable hard drive and still play on someone else's pcs?

Answer
As the external hard drive costs became competitive, more & more use it as the working drive for video editing: capture_import ; edit (drag/drop files & effects); render_save; share_DVD. Muvee project (the work-in-progress) is normally saved for succeeding edits.
Some say that consistent reformating of this working drive helps out avoid the jerky video. Usually an internal hard drive would contain a large & varied content making it near impossible to reformat.
Last but not least, since the external HDD is the working drive, the muvee project (w/ file links) is saved on this drive, it's more likely that you have the flexibility to re-edit the project from another pc assuming that the video editing app are the same for the other pc.
Back-up should be top priority as a HDD might conk out ...utmost care in hard drives handling- a must.
Hopefully, SSD (solid state drives) smaller size w/o moving parts will become competitive in capacity and price.

Hard drive for video editing?

s.rodrigue

I'm in the market for a portable hard drive. I'm going to be using Final Cut Pro and want a portable hard drive that'll have one partition for backup and the other for video stuff and other storage. Price doesn't necessarily concern me as much. I'm looking at either a 500 GB 5400 RPM hard drive or a 320 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. I want the 500GB for its capacity but the 320 GB for its speed. Would there be much of a difference in regards to speed if I went with the 500 GB over the 320 GB? Which one should I get?

(My focus in regards to speed is mainly on video editing, not necessarily the backup)

Answer
Video editing? Definitely go for a Seagate Barracuda 1.5Tb, it's about $150, good luck ;).

Answer
Ok, to all the wrong answerers posted here, sit back and learn something ...

To the Asker - The problem You are having has nothing to do with downloading drivers for the external hard drive. No matter what You download it won't recognize, so stop trying to find something else to add to the system and clog it with useless files, info, and potentially damaging software.

The problem You have is related to the 2 (and only 2) facts I'm about to list here.

1) Windows 98se will not recognize a partition size above 20gigs on ANY hard drive - period. Your 300+gig drive is probably set as a single partition, Win98se won't see it, and even if it can find it, it will cause system errors for all data above 18gigs.

2) Win98se required all partitions to be in the FAT32 format, and most new systems (above WinME/Win2000) use the better performing and more talented NTFS format. FAT32 had a size limitation of also 20gigs. This wll also be compounded by any hardware limitations of Your actual hard drive controller (on the motherboard) in a Win98se system that will probably be around an ATA66/ATA100 IDE controller at best.

The best possible solution to simply get Your current data from the drive in the system now (quick and dirty - no case opening involved), is to use another system that's running a newer OS (that will recognize the drive automagically - XP is fine) and create 3 partitions on it.

The first partition will be 1 primary partition of 128gigs, You won't format this drive (so 98 won't try to see it), it will be done during the setup of XP, as an NTFS drive.

The first extended partition will be the rest of the drive MINUS 17gigs of the drive's space, listed as 17million megs, not the actual numerical 17gigs. This will be extra storage space, and is necessary because XP (any flavor) won't recognize anything over 136gigs of space on a hard drive partiton. I set it to 128 for performance and safety of data reasons You'll learn down the road.

The final partition (the leftover 17gigs) will be formatted as a FAT32 drive (FAT16 if You're EALLY cautious), and when You plug the drive into a Win98 system, it will recognize the partition, although it might not autoplay it for You.

Use this partiton to do a complete backup of the C: drive in the Win98se system, and then You can simply palce this drive into Your system with the Windows XP CD. The setup routine will ask You which partition You want to install it to, pick the first (primary) 128gig partition and You're off and running.

After You have all Your new XP releases of software you want to use, instead of trying to run all Your Win98 stuff through a dual-boot setup, they've updated that process as well. The new method involves a piece of software called "Microsoft VirtualPC 2007". It's a free download from Microsoft.com and basically uses a swapfile to seem like another hard drive partition, and simulates specific audio/video hardware to run other operating systems / Windows versions.

When that's finished, You still have all the old files from the Win98SE system on the same hard drive You're running XP from. Assuming You took the hard drive out of the portable case and installed it directly into the system. Otherwise it's just all on the exernal drive's FAT32 partition to copy to the XP drive and You can simply format the first 2 partitions for use.

Good Luck!.

WD 120GB Portable Passport Hard Drive Hangs PC

pritspat

I have not dropped it nor has it been under any stress. I can feel it spinning too when connected to my laptop but it just hangs up my system. I have tried it on two different laptops from where i could access the drive before but the same problem on both. I am using the original USB 2.0 cable too and im running out of ideas on what could cause this.... any ideas??
My boot order is fine.... i connect the drive AFTER my laptop has booted. It has a single partition (abt 112GB) which was accessible just a few days back so i dont think its a partition size error.
hmmm.. since the drive is spinning i might just try swapping the enclosure... probably a faulty interface?

Answer
I'm not sure if this is the problem, but try it anyway. Go to your BIOS Settings (F2 when you turn on the computer) and go to BootUp order. Your external Hard Drive might be configured ot be the primary bootup device, and since there are no system files on it, your computer can't start up.

If that's not the problem, and this happens on every computer/laptop you try it on, it might just be the Hard Drive. bring it back and get another one and see if that works.

Hope that helps.

why is my 250 gig toshiba portable hard drive not showing up in my computer?

dino25200@

okay, so i got this hard drive a while ago, and it's not working, i believe this is a logical error, because it can be found with a program, i just cant access the files at all. is there any program that fixes this?
forgot to make clear that my hard drive just randomly stopped working
it worked fine before it stopped working

Answer
make sure that your computer's up to date with all service packs installed... also, some computers don't allow Plug N Play, you might have to install drivers for that device on your computer... go to the manufacturer web site and DL the drivers that they should have available

that should work

oh, sh!t... ummm I still would make sure I DL'ed the drivers to make sure that it's recognized on the computer, then if I couldn't find my media on it... if it is something that you can put back on there then I would search for the expandable memory when you plug it in and re-format the drive... format it to FAT32 and then back to (it should be arlready) NTFS

some people actually use their external drives and USB sticks to make their computer run faster b/c they use that as extra cache memory, so if you have ever clicked that "make my computer faster" or whatever it says, then your computer might just recognize it as that...

like I said, DL the drivers and follow all of that... if you have any other questions then feel free to e-mail me

How do I fix my portable Passport Hard drive?

Melissa El

I have a WD Portable USB hard drive called a Passport.
It has like 200 gigs and has a tiny blue circle light on the side. (If that helps identify it)
Anyway it has my LIFE on it... and it's not working anymore!

One day I put it in the computer usb area... and the power went out for a few seconds. As it so often does in this stupid city.
It happened just as the hard drive was trying to do it's setup thing? I don't know what that's called, where it shows the file transfer for a few moments before I can open it.

Anyway, well now it doesn't work. Hurray.... -_-

How do I fix this please?
Thanks much for any help. :)
Oh, also, when I try to plug it in now. The blue light shows up but it doesn't do anything else.
No file transfer or anything.
My computer doesn't even know it's there.
I don't even hear the bloop sound it usually does with my other small thumb drive.
Also it doesn't work on any other pc... if that helps.

This is just a start for you, but there is relevant data there see>(I did a Start Run of > diskmgmt.msc) at PETER23. But the forum is indeed directly related to passport drives. You will most likely need professional service to extract data from the drive although I hope not. (I deal with this stuff every-day all-day) I am a big fan of WD HDD's but when they go.. In future use "two" externals whereas one for everyday use and the second for your once every 14 day (or whatever time-frame suits your needs) back-up. GOOD LUCK!

4.0 out of 5 stars Western Digital Passport - A Great Value In Portable External HDs, May 7, 2008
By Mark "Technology, music and Movies" (East Coast) - See all my reviews
(#1 REVIEWER)
The Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Midnight Black) is the largest capacity in the portable essentials line-up. This comes in a variety of colors including Pink, Real Red, Artic White and Intense Blue. They say that this is the update to the regular Western Digital 320 GB Passport Hard Drive and I own both of them. In fact I also own many other portable hard drives in the Western Digital passport lineup and so far I couldn't be happier. All of these are great for mobile backups of data, though slower to copy large backups than their A/C powered MyBook big-brothers.

Some will be considering the Western Digital My Passport Essential 250GB and the Western Digital My Passport Essential 160 GB sizes of these drives. I started with the 160 GB and have owned multiple versions in all sizes, and capacity aside these drives are basically the same. If you are on the fence between a smaller or larger size, the decision will come down to what you really need most. If you need a drive for complete backups, don't box yourself in purchasing a 160 GB model when your hard drive is 120 GB. Give yourself some room and go with the 320 if you can.

For those with backup needs of 80 GB or smaller, look into the other capacities. Periodic specials are being run on some of the smaller sizes, making them very attractive. Plus a 500 GB model should be on the way soon. So if you need the largest size, then by all means get the 320 GB version. But if you can make do with the smaller size, then the value pricing may entice you. Weigh your options but whatever size you pick now make sure it's enough to meet your needs right now and for at least the next 6 months. In fact, some people who are extremely picky like me are going to want to buy at least 2 drives so that they can have 2 copies of their backups, just in case.

Pros
+ Great capacity options at good prices available in this line of products
+ Nice portable form factor that easily connects via USB
+ USB powered, no A/C required, which is great for portability
+ Works well on Windows Vista, XP and Mac OS X
+ Easy to set up disk encryption for security and privacy
+ Nice looks, and cool color options for those that care about that
+ Turns on and off with your computer or easily ejected via system tray
+ Easy plug-and-play installation
+ Integrates nicely with my growing stable of WD MyBook drives
+ Included software may be useful for some novices
+ Drives are sufficiently durable holding up to normal use over time
+ 320 GB capacity is just about right for most users

Cons
- Somewhat slow file transfer speeds for larger backups
- Included software not useful for power users
- Shiny body attracts scratch, fingerprints and dust
- Only USB, so look to the LaCie 250 GB Rugged Hard Disk if you need fire-wire ports too
- Only up to 320 GB right now, so look to the LaCie 500 GB Rugged Hard Disk with FireWire and USB if you need more capacity in a portable drive
- Have to spend your cash to get a case that should have been included

The Looks

The drive has a nice shiny exterior. The case can scratch in transit and the surface also attracts fingerprints and dust. But the look is still nice and you can easily purchase a case or holder for the drive if it bothers you. Most versions don't ship with the case included, but you can pick up the CaseLogic Small External Hard Drive Case (Black) for $10 or $15.

Check if the hard drive is either PATA or SATA.

i bought a 360 gig "my passport" hard drive a few months ago and the cord that connects it to the computer broke... is there anywhere i can buy a new one besides ebay?

Answer
My "My Passport" external hard drive uses a USB-2 cable. It is the same cable used by My Printer and my USB Hub. You may have an extra cable already sitting around the house or in an old printer box. If not...

I looked on your profile but you don't list where you are geographically so Its hard to direct you to the right place to purchase a new cable except for Radio Shack if you are looking for a physical store. Take your old cable with you and confirm that both ends of the new cable are exactly like both ends of the old cable. You cannot rely on a Radio Shack employee to get it right and you could end up with a firewire cable instead of a USB2 cable.

You can order online from newegg.com or fryselectronics.com

Help I need to know where to take a portable hard drive for repair?

I have a western digital portable hard drive that i use all the time and love. Problem is the port where you plug in the usb cable broke off inside the casing. I contacted western digital and they informed me they do not repair anything out of Warranty (figures). All they could suggest was to find someone that could do data retrieval and buy a new drive. I just want to know if I can fix my old one?!?!?

Answer
If it's just that the USB connector came off, then most any PC repair place should be able to solder one back on. It's just four dang wires. It's not brain surgery, more like toenail clipping.

I can't even recycle files.

WD gives a hardware diagnostics tool with repair. It will work if you have a few errors in your drive. Else, you are on your own. Backup data, try formatting.

Kanguru Solutions is a good brand to shop external hard drives?

Flora

I'm looking for a good external hard drive with 1 or more TB in memory, but I don't know much about electronics, specially hardrive. So, is Kanguru Solutions good or I better be looking for some other brand?

Answer
Everyone will have their own opinions.... I have used USB drives from Seagate, Maxtor now owned by Seagate] and Western Digital in past few years and for 1TB or 2TB of staorage would recommend Western Digitals MyBook Essential range. They offer a good balance of performance versus price and include a good backup program [you don't need to use it if you don't want to] as well as 256bit AES hardware encryption for security. They do a USB 2/3 model that will work a full HI-Speed [USB 2] on a system with USB 2 only but will also work at full SuperSpeed [USB 3] if you have the ports. So you can get it full benefit on an older system that only has USB 2 support and if you upgrade to USB 3 anytime in future you will automatically get 5x speed [SuperSpeed]. In latest tests run by Computer Shopper magazine the MYBook range were some of the fastest drives they tested too!

Why are these 2 external hard NOT compatible with Windows 7?

bsperoz

I have a 400GB Maxtor Manager OneTouch 4, model #9nt2a4-500 (Yes, I realize they are Seagate now). The other is a 1TB TD Fantom GreenDrive (1), model # gd1000eu.

I bought the Maxtor years ago. After 1 year's use on XP, I re-formatted it for Mac. Then I bought a GreenDrive and that started on mac. It's manual says it works up to Vista. Both worked fine on my old Macbook Pro when I used 10.6, and they work fine on my new one running 10.8! Both! So why is it neither will work for my Windows 7 PC? OR WILL THEY? I need to get files from that hunk of junk (I literally HAD to change to Windows 7 for college. I got back to Mac just weeks ago). I'll keep using these 2 drives in any case on my new Mac running 10.8, if I can't get to them to work Windows 7.

I'm looking into a new Seagate (formerly Maxtor) Drive that works with Windows 7 (and 8). http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/portable-hard-drives/standard/backup-plus/ It claims to work INTERCHANGEABLY, as in formatted for both at same time right.

So please answer:

1. Is there any way to get either of the 2 drives I own right now to work on my Windows 7 PC?
2. If not, I'd appreciate and explanation.
3.Finally confirm the Seagate drive I put the link to will work INTERCHANGEABLY on my PC and new Mac.

And yes, I've tried the cloud. My PC is so bad the internet runs 10% speed from when it was new . No joke. I don't trust the cloud, I'm actually trying to get a refund from the company "JustCloud" because they had to many restriction and by the time I pay the upgrades, I'll have spent more than that drive. Plus I want to be able to hold my files in my hand, knowing they are safe. I can do that with the other 2 drives for my .avi, .mkv (Maxtor) and iMovie files (GreenDrive), but I need to hold my files from the backup folder on the Windows 7 PC in my hand too..all 110 gigs.
There's been some confusion so let me clear it up: Both drives are empty. Flat out empty. The only space taken up is their formatting which is "MAC OS Extended (Journaled)". MY GOAL IS TO MOVE FILES FROM PC TO MAC, NOT the other way.

Answer
At the Seagate page you provided, it does say...
"Works with PC or Mac.
Use it interchangeably on your PC or your Mac computer without reformatting."
To do that, you go to the link below, download the HFS4WIN.exe file at the link below. Connect the drive you want to use to the Windows system. Double-click the HFS4WIN.exe file and install. When it finishes, restart.
Each drive you want to use with Windows requires a new "installation" of the HFS4WIN.exe software with that drive attached.

Now about the other drives... There are free ways to do things:
-- To copy files from any Mac drive, use HFSExplorer, free, link below. It doesn't actually mount the drive. It works similar to recovery software--just lets you see the files, and copy them to the Windows internal drive.
-- After you copy files, you can format the drive(s) as NTFS for use with Windows. If the drive(s) has the Master Boot Record partition scheme, you can format it in a "Computer" window of Windows.

If by some chance either of those drives has the GUID Partition Table (to allow installing OS X on the drive), you cannot format it in a "Computer" window of Windows. You would have to remove the partition(s) and apply MBR partition scheme...
Right-click the Start menu and choose "Properties". Click the "Customize" button, and put a check for "Display Administrative Tools".

Next, Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Computer Management

-- On the left, under "Storage", select "Disk Management".
-- Click on the drive to select it.
-- Remove the partition, link below explains how.
-- Add a new partition, link below explains how.
-- Under the "Action" menu, select "All tasks" > Format. Choose NTFS.

About the Tuxtera software... You can save money with Paragon NTFS For Mac. Although Tuxtera claims some mysterious advanced driver design that makes it faster than other drivers, I have used both and find no difference.

As a matter of fact, you can install free software to use any NTFS drive as read-write in OS X....
-- Download and install OSXFuse, link below. You must install this first.
-- Download NTFS-3G, link below.
-- Mount the NTFS-3G image, but do not install--It has two packages inside, and will try to install the defunct MacFuse first, which would fail. Instead....
-- Right-click the "Install NTFS-3G.mpkg" file, and choose "Show Package Contents".
-- A new Finder window will open. Change the view option to list or columns.
-- Navigate to Contents > Packages.
-- Open "NTFS-3G.pkg" and install.

Backup devices compatible with Windows 98 (first edition, not SE)?

Del

I need to upgrade my operating system. But I haven't been able to find any storage solutions to back up my data first. I have Windows (first edition) and USB 1.1. My current ATA hard drive has about 8 (yes 8, not 80) GB.

I also need portable storage to carry data with me when I travel during the upcoming holidays. The computer where I'm going has Windows 98 SE - for which there are more storage solutions - but how do I get my data to and onto that machine?

I considered a disk enclosure for my current hard drive. But how does it work? e.g. does one size fit all? (I have an ATA) How does it connect to another computer? USB? Drivers needed?

I looked at flash drives & picked up a cheap one. It said it only had drivers for Windows 98 SE. I downloaded that driver anyway and it seemed to work - but the flash drive I got was way too small to do backup. Does having USB 1.1 let me 'get away' with using SE drivers for other equipment on my first edition machine?

Other idea?

Answer
I went snooping through my garage and found a box of old computer books. One of them was Windows 98 for Dummies (not 98SE) and it was written in 1998. Back then, there were 3 main ways to back up data: 1. To floppies 2. To tape 3. To special cartridge storage units like Iomega's $150 zip drive that could store 100MB (mega, not giga) on a single $20 cartridge. Just remember that in terms of floppies, it would take about 70 of 'em to store 100MB of data, 700 to store a gig, and 5,600 to back up your entire 8GB HD. Not very feasible.

Since Iomega was specifically mentioned as a supplier of Win98 backup equipment back in the day, maybe their customer support could steer you in the right direction.

http://www.iomega.com/global/index.jsp

A second possibility since your dealing with a small 8GB HD is that a local computer shop with all the needed equipment can do the back up for just a few bucks a CD. Might be less expensive that way than to invest in your own equipment that you may never use again.

Finally, just thought I'd throw in a link to a help site that gives some pretty decent instructions on backing up Win98. Good luck and safe travels this holiday season.
