My hard drive (C:) is only about 80 GB but I've used it to store mp3.Many programs are installed in this drive also.Therefore, I do not have enough room for using with video editing.
Will getting external hard drive solve this problem for me?

The connection between your internal hard drive and the rest of the computer is much faster than a USB connection. Refreshing the video while editing may take longer but it's still doable.

You should consider getting an additional internal hard drive.

The drive will appear as a drive letter in Computer (ie: Drive E:, F:, or some other letter) within approximately 30 seconds of connecting and turning on the drive.
Often the AutoPlay window will appear within 30 seconds.
You can click on "Open Folder to View Files Using Windows Explorer" to open the drive letter, or on the drive letter in (My) Computer. When that window opens, the drive is functioning normally.
Then you can simply drag-and-drop data, or copy-and-paste data, into the drive to use it manually.

Although Anthony's answer was correct in pointing out that the Camcorder's OS (Sony uses a Linux-based "smarts" inside their gear) won't talk directly to a normal external Hard Drive, there are affordable gadgets that will allow you to offload videos and pictures without having to lug around a laptop or desktop PC. (The JVC CU-VD40 ShareStation DVD burner [around $130] is one that JVC designed to mate with their Everio camcorder series -- Sony says you can burn DVD's directly from the SR-11 & SR-13, and JVC's CU-VD3 DVD/BluRay will accept the SR-11's USB 2.0 output, and might be just what you need [it's $180]. I'll look for other Sony-compatible DVD/BluRay burner model #'s and post an Update.)

Speaking of BluRay, if you are shooting in HiDef, you'll need to look for a BluRay (not DVD) burner to handle the AVCHD (H.264 codec) HD files, unless you shoot NTSC Standard Def and transfer your videos via USB or AV cable to a regular DVD burner.

One other easy option you have is to use multiple Sony Memory Sticks (or compatible 3rd-party brands of MemStick Duo -- like Lexar & SanDisk) instead of the built-in Hard Drive to save your videos while travelling. That way you can swap MemSticks or use any one of several models of flash-memory-transfer external hard drives that are designed to eliminate carrying a laptop around for archiving (similar to Panasonic's P2 memory card system for their pro-video camcorder line). You can change the recording option (Hard Drive versus MemStick) in the SR-11's menu.

How do I use an external hard drive with my Flip Video HD?

I can't seem to find a way to save files off my Flip Video HD to my external hard drive using the software on Mac OS X. I can drag the files manually using Finder to my external - but I cannot add/link the files using the software so I can edit the files.

Any ideas? The problem is I don't have enough space on my computer's HD to make it happen. Currently only have 2 gigs of space when I need 8 gig saved.

Unfortunately, there's no way for me to clean off my MacBook Pro so that I can keep 20% of my HDD empty.

The main question here is how can I get my videos to show up in the Flip Video software while keeping them on my external drive? Surely they can't expect you to keep literally hours (trans. gigabytes) of video on your main disk.... right?

I don't use a Mac system but you might try this:

Temporarily move any saved files to the external HD from the computer's internal drive until you have enough free space for the video files. These can be image files, video files, etc. You may even uninstall any programs you don't really use (you can re-install them later if need be). After you have enough space, then add/link the videos from the Flip to the computer then move them to the external drive.

Once that's done, move the other files back to the computer. I had to do this the other day for my friend but it worked. Ideally, you should install another HD in your computer just for video projects. I have 4 drives in my video editing computer.

External Hard Drive Optimization?

I have an external hard drive that I use to store all of my music and video files. My iTunes library is essentially the entire drive. Well, my computer, iTunes, VLC, Bittorrent, etc. all have problems accessing this drive. It seems to have gotten quite slow, because there is so much data stored on it. It is a 1TB Western Digital with USB 3.0. Is there a way to optimize this drive so the speeds are better? Or should I purchase a new one with a different connection option if I continue to run files that require quick playback?

I would start by running a defrag on your external drive to see if that helps. Either use the built in windows defrag option [right click the drive in MyComputer and select "Properties" then tools and choose defragment drive] or use a free tool like Defaggler [I find this works better]:

How full is the drive?

USB 3 is one of the fastest drive interfaces you can [up to 8 X faster than USB 2] so data access should be fast.

You should normally expect a drop in read/write performance if you have less than 10% of free space on a system drive but if this drive is only for storage [as you say it is] then you shouldn't have a problem unless you are trying to write new large video files to it with under 10% free space.

I can't drag and drop a video from my internal hard drive to my external hard drive, help?

I got a wedding video and it's a really big file at about 11 GB. and I want to backup this video by putting this from my PC to my mac, using a 250 GB external hard drive. So I could edit it with iMovie and what not. BUT......it wasn't that simple you see, I dragged the video from my PC's internal hard drive to my external one and it said something along the lines of it doesn't have enough space, when really it has 222 GB free?? I need to share this wedding with my friends and family and they are counting on my, so can someone please tell me what's wrong???? Thank you

Your external hard drive is probably formatted to the old FAT32 standard which can't handle files larger than 4 GB.
You can check this by displaying the drives's properties in Windows. Most external hard drives come formatted to FAT32 because it can be equally used (reading and writing) by all popular operating systems (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, etc.)

There are 3 possible solutions:

1) Transmit the video file to the Mac using your home LAN or WLAN. Mac OS X has file sharing options to allow Windows to access it.

2) Reformat the external drive in Windows to NTFS, the current Windows standard. It will take the 11-GB file without problems, and the Mac will be able to read from it. The Mac will not be able to write to the drive without additional NTFS driver software like 'NTFS for Mac' by Paragon or NTFS-3G.

3) Use WinZIP or WinRAR to compress and split the file into a multi-part archive (=split it into several files), copy the parts to the external drive. Copy them to the Mac and use a tool like Keka (free) to unZIP or unRAR them back into a single file.

An external hard drive for storage is just exactly that: a formatted hard drive disk that plugs into your computer and that you can store things on, like one does on a floppy or a cd or flash drive. "Having software" is irrelevant, except that many external hard drives have a disk that will install a program that enables automatic backup and synchronization of folders on your internal hard drive....

Go to www.newegg.com and look for external hard drives. Also consider just buying another hard drive, internal, and slaving it to your current hard drive, or buying another hard drive, and buying an external hard drive enclosure, putting the hard drive into the enclosure. It would be cheaper to just add another internal hard drive, usually, but there are often various "deals" where buying the hard drive and then the enclosure will bring the cost down.

I got an external hard drive when there was a deal on hard drives at Comp USA, 29.95 after rebate for a 200 GB hdd, and then I bought also an external hdd enclosure for like 39.95.....

For video editing, You should get a high capacity harddrive. Now in market already selling Terabyte HDD. You also should look for external HDD with external Casing supporting firewire. This help in terms of speed. Of course your computer must support firewire too. I prefer seagate HDD.

and it's not recomended to compress your files but you can alwayes use a DVD writer to take a backup of your files each dvd contain from 4.7 to 7 giga

so backup your files to dvds and hard drive

if you still need space buy more dvd and this the best way

each dvd cost about 1 usd
a new hard drive with 1024 giga = i tira cost about 130 usd
