Can you use a portable hard drive as a hard drive in a desktop & if so, how? & if you have tutorials or websites to direct me to, that would be great.

Answer
yes you can.
But, here generally the portable hard drives are smaller in size , i mean generally used in laptops.

so, if you want use portable hard disk as normal HDD, you may have to use a converter 2.5 inch to the bigger size connector converter,.

What is the difference between an external hard drive and a portable hard drive?

quothe_the

I need a hard drive to save all my downloads for iTunes on so that I don't use up the computer space. I found an 500gb external hard drive for about 80$, and 160gb portable hard drive for about 110$. What's the difference between an external and portable, because it sounds like the same concept to me.

Answer
they are the exact same but some people don't know the right word
but portable hard drives are pocket sizes kinda like a flash drive but a bit bigger and external hard drive is more of an at home one you plug into the wall. id go with the external 500gb for 80 rather than 160 for 110 500 is allot more and more useful my opinion.

Will a hard disk purchased in USA run in India even if the voltages are different?

Answer
interesting question, I'm not sure from the information provided what kind of hard disk you are asking about.
if you are asking about an internal disk you would put into your computer then YES, not a problem.
but if you are asking about a portable drive there is a voltage difference, you need to look on the power adapter to see if it is universal and will accept 230V 50Hz,
if not you need to get an adapter, electronics stores sell travel adapter to run small appliances, or you could wait until you get to India and buy a new adapter for it there.

If american market goes down, all markets are goes down. What is the reason?

Answer
America is the most inventive and capitalist country in the world. Most of the stuff in the world was invented by Americans. And, most Asian countries survive by making copies of U.S. inventions. (China and India both devalue their currency to make their products look less expensive than American products. Japan also devalued its currency in the 1980's so it could sell cars costing 2 to 3 times as much for the same price as an American car. Also, Japan sold electronics and cameras below their actual cost in America.)

America's inventions is why America has the largest economy in the world. Even the poor in America have roofs over their heads, dvd players, tv's, microwave ovens, etc.

America survives off of capitalism. Socialism slows innovation. America cannot survive with socialist policies. Also, socialist programs in America are cancerous programs. (Cancerous means those programs eventually create the need for more programs)

I am ordering a Seagate Backup Plus 500GB Portable USB 3.0 External Hard Drive, (compatible with PC and Mac) from Staples. If I plug it into the USB input on my Xbox 360, (newest edition, 4GB) will I be able to select it as a storage device to save downloaded games to?

Answer
I know for sure that you can use a USB drive. You might as well try it out. There's nothing holding you back. Plug it in and see if it pops up when it asks you to pick which storage to get your saved games from.

Is my External Hard Drive Compatible with my Mac Book Pro?

Bella

I ambushing a Mac Book Pro but I have a Samsung G2 Portable External Hard Drive. Would it be compatible with my new laptop.

Answer
Hi there!

The skinny on your drive is this: Yes, the drive will work as an external hard drive and you can store files on it like any other drive; however, the Included backup and password protection software that coms with your drive doesn't support Mac OS.

Therefore, if you want to backup your Macintosh to this particular drive you'll have to reformat the drive to Mac's Extended Journaled format so that Time Machine (Mac OSX native) will recognize the drive: your drive is originally configured for Windows and, for one reason or another, Time Machine canât reformat the drive automatically, so you have to format it yourself first.

Also, if Time Machine is not your thing, here is a list of alternatives to the Macintosh's backup program: http://www.icreatemagazine.com/general/top-5/top-5-alternatives-to-time-machine/

Hope this answers your question.

how to remove the partition on my portable external hard drive?

braveheart

i have an 80gb portable external hard drive which is parted into two{40gb each} and now i want to remove the partition.can anyone share their knowledge on how to do it???

Answer
You have a couple of options that'll do the trick:

1. If you have 80 gb of free space on your internal hard drive, then you could move all of the data from your external hard drive partitions onto your internal drive.

Then you could use the fdisk command to remove the partitions from your external drive and create a single 80gb partition, and then copy the data back from your internal drive to the external drive.

Be sure to make a backup first though - it's easy to make a fatal mistake with the fdisk command and accidentally format the wrong hard drive (speaking from painful personal experience).

2. Purchase a partition management program like Partition Commander or Disk Director. Both are reputable programs that'll let you move or delete partitions without losing your data (see links below for reviews on both of these programs).

This last approach is a lot easier route to go, and money well spent.

Can I transfer music from my computer to my external hard drive without losing play counts on itunes?

Joe

I want to organize my music and put it all in one place, in my external hard drive. I currently have it all split up in different folders on my computer so if I were to move it I'm expecting it to say "Cannot play file. The original file cannot be found." Is there anyway to transfer it onto the external drive without having to import it all over again and lose my play counts? Thanks and sorry for the complicated question.

Answer
Yes. This is pretty simple â just transfer my music from my work computer onto my Maxtor OneTouch, take it home, and transfer the music onto my home computer â but I rely on all of my song ratings, accumulated over thousands of hours of listening while I work, to populate my iPod Shuffle with songs from the âMy Top Rated Songsâ Smart Playlist. I couldnât find any information on how to transfer my music, while still retaining my song ratings, but I finally figured it out.
Before you do this, youâll have to first transfer the actual files to your new computer. You may choose to burn CDs, DVDs, or use a thumb drive; but using a FireWire cable is easiest for large libraries, unless you have a portable hard drive.
The first step to this process is to review your storage settings under your iTunes Advanced preferences, which can be found by selecting Preferences from the Edit menu (Windows) or iTunes menu (Mac), and then selecting the Advanced tab
The first option, âiTunes Music folder locationâ indicates where your iTunes media content is stored by default. Remember that this only includes the media content and not the library database itself. Whether all of your content is located in this folder is going to depend upon the next two settings found on this screen:

Keep iTunes Music folder organized determines whether tracks in your iTunes Music folder are automatically organized based on the track information found within each file. With this option enabled, iTunes will move and rename files within the iTunes Music folder as necessary into an ARTIST\ALBUM folder structure, and name each file based on its track name from within the tags itself. If this option is disabled, then files within the iTunes Music folder will be left with whatever name and sub-folder they were in when you first imported them, regardless of changes to the tag information within iTunes itself.

Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library determines whether files that you add to your library are automatically copied into the music folder, or left in their original location. When you import new content with this option disabled, iTunes simply âreferencesâ the file from wherever youâre importing it, rather than making a copy of it in your iTunes Music folder.

Tracks copied into the iTunes Music Folder become âManagedâ files (in that iTunes will manage the location and naming of these files), whereas files that are not copied into the iTunes Music folder are âReferencedâ filesâiTunes stores a full path to the file, but does not actually take any further action with those files in terms of organizing, renaming, moving, or deleting those tracks.

Note that content purchased from the iTunes Store or ripped from CD is always stored in the iTunes Music folderâiTunes is actually creating new files in this case so it has to have somewhere to put them by default. Therefore, this setting only affects existing files from your computer that are added to the iTunes library using the File, Add to Library option or by dragging-and-dropping them into iTunes from another folder.

So why is all of this important? How you have configured these options is going to determine how much flexibility you have when moving your iTunes media content elsewhere. In a default configuration where all of your media files live within the iTunes Music folder location ("Managed" files), and have been organized by iTunes, the process of moving your library may be considerably smoother than for a user who has a bunch of âreferencedâ tracks living in various locations and possibly even on different drives.

While iTunes can move your files to a new location in either scenario, the only way to move a library that consists of referenced files is to actually convert them to an entirely managed library in the process. Users who have built their own file-system organization for their media content and want to preserve that layout will likely find the process of moving their content to be much more challenging without creating a whole new iTunes library and reimporting it.

I already know that laptops are used if you're more mobile but can some one tell me which is best for me? I occasionally go on vacations with my family around 3-4 times a year for about two-three days each trip, so I don't think I would need to bring a laptop with me but I don't know if I should use a computer or a laptop for doing school work and gaming because both are okay with me and I just don't know what to pick. And what are the best brands/certain types of laptops and computers in 2013? If you can, please mention a certain type of product(s). Thank you very much!

Answer
Desktop are better for gaming and will last longer then any laptop out there. Laptops are portable and will last 3 to 5 years depending on how you treat it. Any puter you buy will begin to age out after 3 years because of the march of technology. I know a lot of people who buy new every three years just to stay up with the new advances in CPU and GPU.

I prefer ASUS and HP. ASUS has the best warranty of the market on most of their products. Most of their laptops come with a accidental drop warranty.

If you want ask another question and all of use can provide links to our favorites system to recommend.

Brand buying advise.

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

Should I upgrade to the xbox 360 slim? or should a buy a 3ds instead?

Samuel B

I already have the xbox 360 arcade system and I never brought a hard drive for it and the slim model does look good. I also like portable gaming and I'm in college and can play the 3ds in between my classes. I was also thinking about the ps3 but for $250 that is to much! And I could just buy a blu-ray player if I really want which at the moment I don't so any advice is good advice so thanks :)

Answer
The X Box 720 is coming out in 2013.

So You shouldn't get another X Box until 2013.

So You should get the 3DS

Because you can play music (even with the system close)

You can LOWER the VOLUME of 3D

You can also turn the 3D OFF Completely

And 3D is good for working out your eye muscles & brain to keep them in shape as shown in this link:

http://www.aoa.org/x17309.xml

The Nintendo 3DS has downloadable 3D Music videos from today's American music artist which I have already downloaded the 3 free 3D Music Videos to watch anywhere and the 3DS has 3D "Blue Man Group" video and College Humor (in 3D) with the FREE "Nintendo Video" App that you can download (but its 4 3D Videos at a time and they replace them once in a while) and you can download cheap downloadable 3D Apps & 3D games costing from 99 cents to $5.99 and the Nintendo 3DS also has FREE downloadable 3D Apps & 3D Games, which I have already downloaded 3 Free 3D Apps and I have downloaded 2 Free 3D Games and the 3DS has a 3D Camera and I have already used the 3DS 3D Camera to take 3D photos and I have uploaded some of my 3D footage online using the Nintendo 3DS's Web Browser to upload my 3D footage online and I have used my 3DS Web Browser to also download other peoples 3D footage from the Internet on my 3DS Web Browser and I have view all sorts of 3D content on 3D Websites online on my 3DS's Web Browser and I have use my 3DS 3D Camera to play 3D Augmented Reality games as well and it's all in 3D without the Glasses using the 3DS 3D Camera and It has beautiful 3D HD graphics that equal to that of a 3D HD version of Wii Graphics and I have Streamed 3D Videos Online on my 3DS in the eShop and I have also Watch 3D Trailers for upcoming 3D movies coming to Theaters in 3D and I have done all of this in 3D Without the Glasses

The 3DS with a Wi-Fi Update can RECORD 3D Videos in 60 fps (unlike other camcorders, that only Record in 2D Only and in up to 30 fps only)

So you can pay $169 for a Nintendo 3DS and buy the greatest Games ever & all in 3D Without the Glasses like Cave Story 3D & Kid Icarus & Super Mario 3D Land & Mario Kart 7 using the MOTION SENSORS to play the game like if you were turning a real steering wheel to turn the Kart left & right and also play such other 8 GB 3D Games like TheatRhytem Final Fantasy & Kingdom Hearts 3D & Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D & Crush 3D and Shinobi & Animal Crossing & Rodea the Sky Soldier & Michael Jackson: the Experience 3D & Ridge Racer 3D & Super Street Fighter 4 3D & Monster Hunter 4 & Golden Sun 4 & Star Fox 3D & Zelda 3D & Sonic Generations 3D & Tetris 3D & Resident Evil: Revelations & Tales of the Abyss 3D & Tekken 3D which also has the 3D Movie Tekken the Movie 3D in it to watch and also play other 8 GB 3D HD games as Spider Man 3D and 100% of the 3DS games are in HD 3D Without the Glasses

And the 3DS pixel density is MUCH sharper than an average HD TV

They're making Angry Birds 3D as a downloadable game

And the 3DS has DLC (Downloadable Content) like Xbox Live for a bunch of 3DS games to add content to the game later on for Free

1 of the Free 3D Apps I have downloaded was Netflix

And Netflix is getting 3D Movies in the next few months, so for $169 you can watch 3D movies on the free Netflix App on the 3DS in 3D Without the Glasses

And 100% of the people who have said that they get headaches from 3D, have said that after up to 1 week of using the 3DS they NO LONGER get headaches anymore and that they now play with the 3D all the way up 100% all the time, non-stop

But I have never had any problem with the 3D at all, but each person has a different experience with the 3D ON during the first week

You can now pay to download 3D Videos on the 3DS

The 3DS is getting Hulu Plus before the end of this year (2011) as a Free downloadable App and Hulu already has 3D Content

and you can check this Link below for more 3DS Games:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_3DS_games

P.S. You will want to check these sites out for the Web Browser's 3D ability:

http://www.3ds-screenshot.com/

http://gamecrunch.co/3dscreens/

http://3dporch.com/

http://3dspaint.com/

http://www.klutz.com/static/nintendo/n3ds_mm9.html

http://www.instructables.com/3ds/

And there are such great cheap downloadable games from the eShop as:

Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword

Dillon's Rolling Western

Pushmo

Pyramids

And here are the 2D Resolutions:

Wii = 640

3DS = 800

And here are the Motion Sensors:

Wii = 1 Axis

3DS = 3 Axis

And here are the Frame Rates (Frames Per Second):

X Box 360 Slim = 30 fps

3DS = 60 fps

And the 3DS Wireless is 2.4 GHz.

And here are the Audio's:

X Box 360 Slim = 5.1 Surround Sound

3DS = 7.1 Surround Sound

And the 3DS has way more better graphics than the Wii as shown in this Link Here:

On my portable hard drive i kept all my pictures + videos + movies, i had copied a movie onto it one day, and then about 1 month later and plugged the hard drive into my laptop and i clicked onto it, it let me onto the hard drive, but when i tried to click on the pictures folder it just freezes and then doesnt respond, i've tried it with every folder on the hard drive and it does the same thing over and over, ive even tried it on two other computers and it still wont work, i dont know what to do as it has alot of my old pictures + videos on which i dont have a copy of. please help?

Answer
You can try unplugging then replugging the hard drive a few times. That includes the data cable (if any) and the power cord. I suspect either the driver or a system file is corrupted.
You can also try to visit that portable hard drives manufacturer web site and look for support links. Maybe they have a solution or some file you can download to your computer that might help.
But don't be surprised if the drive is dead.

I use two large capacity memory sticks to backup all my data (not the applications since I have their CDs and DVDs). In case one breaks, I purchase another memory stick and transfer everything from the good stick to the new stick. This way I always have two backups.
I am also considering purchasing an external hard drive that will be used strictly for backing up files. So the only time I connect it is when I do my weekly backups. Otherwise, it remains disconnected and powered off. That will lenghten it's life since the internal disks won't be spinning the whole time.

I copied music files from my portable hard drive but when i disconnect the portable hard drive i can not play?

I have a portable hard drive, I copied songs from a friend on it.I brought it home and put it in my usb port. autoplay opend up. I tried to transfer music using media import but is says that Roxio cd creator trial has expired. I have an 80gb zune. I tried to change it to copy to there but there was no option. I created a shortcut to the file on my desktop. It worked while I had the portable HD connected and loaded all the songs to my zune. But when I unhooked the Portable HD My zune software would not let me play them. So I need to know how to transfer files so I dont need to keep plugging in my portable HD everytime I want to listen to select songs. Thanks anyone who understands my problem and can help. Ialso I am running a Dell Laptop with crappy Vista.( i mean windows vista)

Answer
You didn't copy the files. You created shortcuts to a file. Yes, they are very different. A shortcut can only be used when the original files are present. You need to select all the files you want to copy. Select edit at the top of the window. Go the copy to.. Select the location and you're done. Adios

My wife just got a Mac-book (or some apple computer of shorts). It is the first apple base computer in our family. Being I'm a Microsoft guy (I have not converted yet), I'm clueless about Macs. I want to buy my wife a portable hard drive for her birthday (and she has been asking for one). Will any portable hard drive work for an Apple or do I need to specifically buy an Apple product?

Answer
If you were to go to an Apple retail store, you'd see that none of the portable hard drives are Apple-branded. Apple doesn't make its own hard disks, not even the ones in their Time Machine backup product.

If you get something from Seagate, Toshiba or Western Digital you should be fine. Those are all big players in the storage market and I've used drives from all those manufacturers successfully with a Mac running OS X.

I was really just hoping for a list of models... I know what the specs are but I've found it difficult actually comparing them to the information written about each laptop/desktop.

Answer
Just remember these: The 1st thing you should look for on the computer surface is A LOGO STICKER FOR NVIDIA OR ATI MOBILITY RADEON just below the keyboard. This SHOWS that the laptop has A DEDICATED GRAPHICS CARD. Diablo III, the game I would love most to play is said to run on 3D graphics & is rumored to need at least 1GB (if you're a little into gaming like myself) graphics memory (a lower graphics memory = CHEAPER laptop price), so always check the system requirement specs of the game's packaging (ex. SIMS 3; see if your laptop meets all the requirements).
Next important aspect is the RAM (memory). If you're in designing & you need to ran applications like AutoCAD 2007 or softwares used for editing photos and videos, you have to make sure that the laptop has AT LEAST 2GB DDR2 memory modules in it (the more, the better; DDR3 the fastest and newest type of memory modules that came out last October).
But what makes a computer really run fast? It is it's processor! So if you really want your processor to have computing prowess & for you to be able to run different applications simultaneously, make sure it's AS EFFICIENT AS an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (Centrino 2 is a Core 2 Duo that features power saving capabilities; Quad Core is for gaming fanatics). A Core 2 Duo is like having 2 motors running the computer each independent of the other w/c means for a Quad Core, it's like 4 motors are running the machine (that means it will run faster & more efficient even if its frequency is lower to that of a Core 2 Duo). Intel: Core 2 Duo, Centrino 2, Quad Core & Core i-7 (Core i-5 for desktops only as of now) are all very much faster and better than an Intel: ATOM, CELERON & PENTIUM (and their more affordable AMD counterparts). Just make sure that you have AT LEAST 2GHz of speed on your processor. For my computer, I chose an Intel® Core⢠i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB; newest type just came out this Nov) w/c is just the right stuff for the applications I use & games I play.
The average laptop LCD screen size is 15.4". If you want something smaller than that w/ these 3 features I just shed some light on, expect the price to go higher (ex. for 13.3" & 14.1" LCD screens).
The HDD (Hard Disc Drive) should have at least 320GB {I would have loved it if my HP came w/ 2 HDD bays like a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6979: 1st one for a 128GB SSD (Solid State Drive) & a 500GB (72000rpm) 2nd HDD}.

If you've thought of a SMALL, PORTABLE and affordable laptop, the new Sony CW13FX/B Jet Black glossy notebook went on sale @ Fry's about 3 weeks ago (for only $699.99). I checked out the price they had in other stores & Fry's was cheaper by about $200 {go to Fry's Electronics (www.Fry's.com) then type in this # 6029078 (or 6029138 for white & 6029108 for pink) in the search box under Notebooks/Tablets before you click on GO}. Now, after the sale, the price went up by $100, so we are waiting for it to go on sale again after Thanksgiving. Let's say you are on 9th grade.. when buying a computer, you have to consider if you will still be able to use the one you bought for college? For this particular Sony model, I would assure you, you can still use it for college as long as you take good care of it & not break it (for the technology installed on this computer will not be outdated & still be good in 10 years to come, but this is just an example). There are a lot of good brand of computers out there Toshiba, Dell, HP and ACER (w/c owns Asus & Gateway; has affordable computers w/ the newest technology installed), you just need to look for the ones on sale (try display computers on Clearance Sale inside stores like Micro Center, Best Buy and Office Depot). Try http://www.newegg.com/ look for Pavilion dv6-1362nr (sale @ $649.99).
MICROSOFT OFFICE IS AN OFFICE PRODUCTIVITY SOFTWARE (so you would need to buy the retail version after the 60-day Free Trial Version that comes with all brand new computers expires, to be able to use the Word, Excel and Power Point applications). Retail version is about $159, but you can get a discounted price of $99 w/ a configured Dell laptop (www.dell.com).
MacBooks, that is on a totally different aspect for Apple has their own OS (Operating System) unlike the common Windows OS (XP, Vista and THE NEWEST WINDOWS 7) that most computers come with.
For the best prices, go to Fry's, CostCo, MicroCenter and BestBuy's web sites for updates & comparison. There are a lot of options & different combinations you can try in customizing your own laptop, just STICK TO THE BARE ESSENTIALS first (www.HP.com). The 15.6" HP laptop I customized & had configured w/ the Intel® Core⢠i-7 came to a total amount of $1,455.80 ($136 tax + other sur-charges already included). I chose to pay more to have the newest technology installed so that I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT GETTING OUTDATED WITHIN THE NEXT 11 YRS.

What kind of laptops are good at gaming ? 10points?

JustARegul

I'm looking for a laptop that is good at gaming , i'm thinking of Acer , Asus , Toshiba , Samsung , HP NOT ALIENWARE! I'm looking for a laptop that is around 650$(USD) that is good at gaming not too expensive but a good gaming graphics card but I don't wanna waste my laptop because I replaced the keyboard and bought another hard disk and totally it worth like 60$ So what laptop is the best type for gaming ?

Answer
You have mentioned many of the good companies for the laptops and many of them have nice models but I would recommend you to go for HP because of good features and size which are really important if you need it for gaming primarily. The model which I would recommend is HP Envy 4-1110us.

I would like you to see this for further details:

http://www.amazon.com/HP-4-1110us-14-Inch-Ultrabook-Black/dp/B009AU2IBK/ref=zg_bs_565108_2/184-0962046-0464844&tag=faowiw-20

It has Intel Core i3-3217U 1.8 GHz (3 MB Cache) and 4 GB DDR3 which is really good processor with good speed which will be really impressive for gaming experience. It has 500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive, 32 GB Solid-State Drive which sufficient space to have. It has 14-Inch Screen with Intel HD graphics 4000 which means you will have a really portable device. And lastly it comes under you price range of $650 as well. So my recommendation would be HP Envy 4-1110us.

Here is a comment from an actual user which will help you in making your decision:

I need help of upgrading my HP DV6-6128CA pc?

Ronron

I need help of upgrading my hp to a 1tb hard drive, 8gb of ram. Plus i need help of backing up my hd. Please put steps

Answer
The best way of upgrading a hard drive in a laptop is to buy a replacement hard drive AND a USB-SATA 2.5" external enclosure (about $20).

Install the new hard drive into the enclosure and attach it to the machine.

Use HDClone, Acronis Partition Manager or a utility that comes from the drive manufacturer to clone the internal hard drive to the external one. http://www.computer-answers.ca/2012/computer-questions/windows-questions/q-how-do-i-clone-my-windows-7-drive-to-a-new-hard-drive/

Then physically swap the two drives (this will require opening the machine. Refer to the owners manual, and if you are not confident, take it to a competent tech.

Put the old drive into the external enclosure -- voila, there is your backup.

http://www.computer-answers.ca/2012/computer-questions/windows-questions/q-how-do-i-upgrade-the-hard-drive-in-a-windows-laptop/

Installing 8 GB RAM is easy, you need two 4GB DDR3-1333 modules and you can swap them in yourself.

Almost out of space on my laptop, want to get an external usb hard drive. Looking for at least 500GB, but preferrably 1TB+

What are good, relatively cheap ones, that work with laptops?

Thanks.

Answer
You heed a portable external hard drive- one that does not require an external power source.

This one is cheap for the 1tb size ($85).

What is the best laptop for video editing?

FireHawk

I love video editing! I have had a Desktop PC for a long time and done some great work with it however, I am ready to move to something more advanced than what I have been doing (Windows Movie Maker). Since I want a new computer, I might as well go portable. I like Apple's macbooks, but I wanted to see if there were any other computers that offered everything that macs offer and maybe more features for less $$$. Any Suggestions?

Answer
Hi FireHawk,
video editing requires a powerful and speedy machine. Many of their laptops
are designed for video games, which means that their multi-media capabilities are top of the line. Though Alienware is one of the best, Hewlett-Packard is good too. Make sure to get quality graphics and audio cards. nVIDIA makes great graphics cards while Audigy sound cards are best for real-time editing.

Try Alienware M17X - Laptop with IntelCore 2 Quad Processor, 17" LCD, 4GB RAM, 500GB HARD DRIVE - Intel Core 2 Quad Processor,

Getting a portable hard drive to work at school?

my portable hard drive is not working image

Im trying to get a portable hard drive to work at school to play games. When i plug it into the usb slot and power it on, it wont let me use it. It detects it as volume and i am unable to use it without administrator rights. Anyway to use the hard drive here still?

Answer
no, the computer is locked down via the administrator account.
the only way to get to your games is from a bootable live linux cd.
then you could copy your games from your portable drive to the windows drive, then reboot into windows again and use the games.

Does it work if you install a game onto a portable hard drive?

SmileyMile

So basically I'm feeling quite reminiscent about sims 2, and I want to play it again, but it's not installed to my new laptop. Last time it slowed the laptop down loads so I was wondering, if I installed all the play files to my portable hard drive, would it work? I remove the hard drive and use it for my photos and stuff too but I wouldn't play sims on any other computer, I just don't want to clog up the laptop hard drive. Any help?

Answer
yes it would but its the ram that slows the pc down putting it on a portable hd will make it that little but faster though, but it would not work on other computers unless they have the sims2 in there registry .Rad

I want something sleek and portable just like the Macbook Air for school. People say that there are better alternatives. Can you give me some suggestions?

Answer
Macbooks are double the price for an equal set of specs in a smaller size.
I just answered a MacBookPro 13" ($1100) very similar to 14" Samsung NP300E4C-A03US at $500 at Tigerdirect.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AjcrHzSqXBawhoDYeD4u8uvty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20121021124729AA8pjjQ
The Samsung is thicker, agreed.
The MacAir is basically a ultrabook. Has no optical drive. If you want to spend that kind of money, the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon is a very fancy business level system built a heck of a lot better at about the same price.
The rule is smaller and thinner gets either much more expensive or gets dismally poor performance or some kind of balance between them. There are direct competitors to the Macair now like the Lenovo U410.
Apple leaves out a lot of information about their products and hides specs wherever possible.
Here is detail:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Air
Here is about CPU and graphics power:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
You still need a good carrying case, because drop a MacBook on the floor and get hit with a massive repair bill. A MacBook Air does the same things as a $300 netbook.

You have to decide which MacAir to do a comparison.
Lets say base model 13"
HD 4000 graphics
i5-3427U CPU passmark 3725
4GB RAM soldered
128GB SSD
Bluetooth and Wifi (no ethernet hardwire without a dongle)
50 watt hour decent battery (not serviceable)
3 pounds
about 13"x9"x0.68"
2 USB 3.0
Thunderbolt (mostly for dongles)
SD card slot
$1200
Every company has Ultrabooks now, all of them less than MacAir in price with equal or better features. Since $1200 doesn't scare you, to get something really cool is either the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 carbon or Lenovo Thinkpad X230 convertible tablet.
X230 - The screen flips around to be both a laptop and a tablet:

Base model with core i5 is $1100
i5-3320M passmark 3874 faster than MacAir by a little
Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) vs Mac with OSX
12.5" Multitouch HD (1366x768) LED Backlit Display, Mobile Broadband Ready, 2x2 Antenna or 3x3 antenna, Intel® HD Graphics 4000, 4 GB DDR3 - 1600MHz (1 DIMM) User upgradable, backlit keyboard option is $40, UltraNav⢠with TrackPoint® and buttonless multi-touchpad, Fingerprint reader is $20 option, 720p cam is $30 option, 500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm, 6 Cell ThinkPad Battery X67+ is $10 extra, Bluetooth $30 option, Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2200 (2x2 BGN), broadband available,
Spill resistant keyboard, roll cage design.
12.0â x 9.0â x 1.23â, 3.67 pounds
The X1 Carbon is the best ultrabook available, and shows starting at $1250

Similar in many ways to a MacAir, but a premium carbon fiber construction drop-tested and can open a full 180 degrees.
45Wh, Integrated, RapidCharge up to 80% battery life in 35 minutes
Display 14.0" HD+ Anti-Glare (1600 x 900) (300 NITS) Wide Viewing
Weight is 3 pounds, and dimensions 13.03" x 8.9" x 0.74" with the 14" screen

If you just want "like a MacAir only cheaper, Lenovo has Ideapad U300 and U400 of the same design as MacAir.

What type of gaming laptop should I buy?

Jostle

Hey everyone,
I am just looking for a bit of insight on what laptop I should look into purchasing. I primarily want the laptop to run games such as Starcraft 2 and Crysis on ultra/high settings without any lag or jumps. I just bought a new external hard drive, my book home edition 1T. When i go to start a new session on Pro Tools and save it to this external drive it wont let me. The only drive that remains an option is my hard drive. I see my external in the list but its in the gray and I can't choose it. What is going on? Have I wasted my money?

Answer
The Western Digital My Book drives use the Initio Firewire bridge chip, which doesn't meet the requirements for Pro Tools systems.. The requirement is an Oxford 911, 912 or 924 bridge chip..

That being said, the bridge chip is most likely NOT the cause of what you are describing. It is probably a file system/format issue.

Here are the format requirements for the current version Pro Tools 7.4:

Mac OS X = "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" aka "HFS+"
Windows XP/Vista = "NTFS"
_____________________________________________________

You can check what format the drive is in by doing the following:

Mac OS X:
- Right click on the drive icon from the desktop and choose "Get Info" (You can also hold "command" key and click it)
- Under the "General" section it should reveal the format..

Windows XP/Vista:
- Click the start button and choose "My Computer" (or "Computer on Vista)
- Right click on the drive icon and choose "Properties", it should reveal the format..
_____________________________________________________
Most drives come out of the box formatted as "FAT 32", which on a mac might read as "MS-DOS".. this won't work without "re-formatting"

You can use either "Disk Utility" built into your Mac, or "Disk Management" built into your Windows machine to "re-format" the drive.

********** REMEMBER ***********
You will be ERASING and reformatting the disk, BACKUP all data from the drive first as it will be gone permanently.

what are the pros and cons for soft modding a wii and hardmodding?

ag1000

can you still use an external hard drive if your wii is hard modded ?!
i am currently deciding what i should do and i know its simply to soft mod and that it would be free obviously but at the same time i dont mind spending a little money for getting it hard modded.

Answer
As ivantop said, softmodding is a lot easier and has almost no risk of bricking your console providing instructions are followed correctly. My favorite tool is ModMii because it's the simplest to use and does the fastest work, allowing you to install homebrew, run games from a backup drive, and playback DVD's. Sure hardmodding can do the same, but it costs money, has its' risks of the chips not being soldered correctly, and is kind of pointless considering that softmodding does everything hardmodding does.

I am looking for a 500GB or more external portable hard drive. I want it to be powered by a USB cable instead of an external power source. Also i dont want to spend a lot on one, but i will spend the extra money to get the better product.

Here is a pretty good one: 500GB/USB 2.0 Powered/$120

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8475063&type=product&id=1185271084002
This one is also good and reliable with 500GB, but uses an AC Adapter Power Source, it is cheaper though $95

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9318142&type=product&id=1218084031027
This one has a faster data transfer rate and is a little smaller than both above, however it is $130

I have a 1tb western digital portable hard drive that i have been using since december 2011 that was formatted originally to windows but 3 months a go i reformatted it with the help of APPLE to exFAT so it can work with my mac and windows.
BUT a few days a go it all the sudden stopped working!
when i plug my hard drive to my mac and tried opening it it wont let me at all my mac jumps to the desk top
BUT when i plug the hard drive to my windows laptop it lets me view my files and everything but i cant copy them off or add any files..

i know i can reformat it and it will work again but i cant loose the files on it because most of them are very important to me apart from my movies.

PLEASE HELP!

Answer
Because it sounds like both operating systems are unable to properly use the drive, I would guess you have a corrupted structure. The only surefire way to fix this is to reformat (and make sure you are ejecting the drive before removing it). One thing to try would be to see if a Linux computer could read and write to the drive - at least then you could copy the contents somewhere else so you could format the drive. You could install Ubuntu LInux for free through Windows using the Wubi installer (link below).

Are these convincing reasons for my parents to get me a MacBook Pro 2011?

potatochem

Well its my birthday comming up soon and i wanna get a macbook pro 2011 so i made a list of all the reasons they might get me one and i want u guys to check it to make sure its good...

Reasons to get me a MacBook Pro 2011

Argument #1, Viruses: Macâs are virus proof because they donât hand out the source code, and because the mean virus people donât feel like making a Mac virus. And windows viruses arenât compatible with Macâs
View http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000737.htm for more info.

Argument #2, Memory: My computer only has 74 gigabytes of hard drive space while a MacBook Pro has 320 GB of hard drive space, and my computer has 1GB of RAM while a MacBook Pro has 4x that.
View http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro?mco=MTM3NDczMzg for more info.

Argument #3, Portability: A MacBook Pro has much, much, much, more portability than my computer because itâs only 4.5lbs .95 inches thick, has a 7 hour battery life; a very good life for a laptop, and is only 13 inches wide. While my computer being a desktop, is, well, not portable at all.
View http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro?mco=MTM3NDczMzg for more info.

Argument #4, My Grades: I have gotten outstanding grades, only two Bâs this year and everything else Aâs. Two quarters in a row I have gotten strait Aâs and those were the last two. I got into GT, I got into algebra 1 honors in seventh grade, and I got into honorâs everything else. I have also gotten near 600 or I got 600 on every math SOL. In addition I got the presidential academic excellence. And the only thing I have gotten in reward for these feats of excellence was ice-cream at McDonalds⦠I think I might deserve a bit more.

Argument #5, Paying Method: Okay sure the MacBook Pro costs 1,199 dollars, but at Micro center you can get it for 999.99 dollars (http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=macbook+pro&hl=en&cid=17362057421786859684&os=local-sellers#lstart=8 third to the bottom) alternatively you can get it at the apple store using a student discount ($100). And I am willing to pay all the money I have which is about $200 to help pay the price for it. Plus, this is all I want for my birthday (with the exception of itunes gift cards) so everyone can pitch in.
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=macbook+pro&hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=17362057421786859684&sa=X&ei=qpAWTqThCJCdgQexnRU&ved=0CIgBEPMCMAA

Argument #6, Long lasting: Macâs can last a long long time, which means theyâll be useful through high school (especially if I go to TJ).
More info:
http://store.apple.com/us_smb_78313/question/answers/which_mac_is_right_for_me?tqid=Q47FTCHPKYUKPCCFFPX4A9HC4F2XTP47PKK7CJUD4KATAXCF29YUDH2F2AP29UYTY

Argument #7, Dire need of an upgrade: About half of the times I shutdown my computer it shows the blue screen. And it takes a really long time for it to connect to the internet.

Summary: Macâs are pretty much virus free and canât get windows viruses. Macâs have more than 4x more hard drive space and 4x more ram in a computer one tenth the size. So much more portable which means I can work on school papers in the dining room, or anywhere else. I have gotten excellent grades and awards in the past few years and havenât gotten much in return. All Iâm asking for is this Mac and Iâm willing to pitch in with $200. I can use this through high school. And last but defiantly not least I need an upgrade, because every time I shutdown my computer it gets blue screen. Itâs my birthdayâ¦

Summary of summary: Virus free, much more memory and, faster, really portable, Iâve gotten good grades, Iâm willing to pitch in money, need an upgrade, itâs my birthday, and this is all Iâm asking for.

For more info visit: http://www.apple.com/why-mac/ and http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC700LL/A?mco=MjEyOTY3NTg .

P.S. If you absolutely are revoked upon the thought of getting me a MacBook Pro, a regular MacBook would be fine tooâ¦
oh yeah and i just wanna know if its good!! i don't care if you don't like macs, i just want to know if it's convincing.

Answer
Its convincing :)
But macbooks are kinda expensive.
You could get one free on http://apple.freebiejeebies.co.uk/589556

I use a Seagate portable hard drive formatted for a MAC. Is there some way I can access these files on both a PC and a MAC without reformatting the external drive/erasing my files?

Answer
You can either use this, which isn't that great but it's free. http://hem.bredband.net/catacombae/hfsx.html

Or you can use this, which isn't free. http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

Or, if you have access to an OS X Snow Leopard install DVD, you can try and find the HFS drivers on there.

How to format a hard drive to work with Mac + PC?

I have a Lacie Starck 500GB Portable Hard Drive. Unfortunately it is only compatible with Mac, but I do a lot of crossing over between Windows and OSX.
Can somebody please help me to format the device so it can be used on windows too?
This would be of great help!
Thanks.

Answer
FAT32
