Is Formatting An External Portable Hard Drive To exFAT The Best Way To Transfer Files Between Mac & Windows?

I have a mac laptop and a windows 7 desktop and I was wondering if formatting a drive to exFAT was the best way to transfer my files across?

Format it NTFS. exFAT does't work on some drives and makes them either really slow or not able to transfer any data. I have tried this out on a bunch of drives

i have a wd external hd backed up to my mac with time machine. but know i think the square (hd) is huge and looks like a block. i wanna get a portable one. but i dont know witch one to buy because of all the options there is. I wanna get a 500gb that i can back it up to the mac but whenever i dont use my mac i wanna disconected and use it on the pc. is there a difference between. the WD portable hd for mac?

yes u can use hard drive HD in mac as well as on pc i got same problem 2 years back when i bought my Time Capsule anyhow now i use maxter 750 gb (before it was 250gb) external HD with my pc and mac
no problem
dont worry but be sure for potable and external HD u need not to jurk too much as i loss my 250gb HD.

Can my sony tv change the format of my portable hard drive, so now i can only play the video files in my tv through usb, and when i connect to pc it wants to format before i can do anything, I have stuff that has personal value so i dont want to format. Has anybody encountered this problem?

Well, if the TV actually DID format the drive (which is totally possible for it to do), all that personal data would be gone anyway.
However, whatever format your TV would format it to should be readable by a computer. Try someone else's computer, or try it on a Mac ( macs have excellent format compatibility).

I use a Seagate portable hard drive formatted for a MAC. Is there some way I can access these files on both a PC and a MAC without reformatting the external drive/erasing my files?

Or, if you have access to an OS X Snow Leopard install DVD, you can try and find the HFS drivers on there.

I have a Lacie Starck 500GB Portable Hard Drive. Unfortunately it is only compatible with Mac, but I do a lot of crossing over between Windows and OSX.
Can somebody please help me to format the device so it can be used on windows too?
