External portable hard drive?

Mommy MiMi

I am working between two differ computers . One at home & one at work, I need the same files on both computers. I need to share Microsoft Office & my pictures between the two. I need to work on the same images & documents at home & work. Would an eternal portable hard drive work for me? It would be so convent to just keep the pics & documents on something else like the portable hard drive, but I am clueless. Thanks for any help.

Answer
hey mimi that would work if you want you can just load them off the harddrive that way.

as an alternative amazon.com has 5gigs of free cloudspace - meaning you can upload whatever files/documents you want online and have access to them anywhere.

i would personally prefer a portable hard drive/usb thumb drive for privacy reasons/not wanting my stuff on the net. :)

Furthermore if your work doesnt have microsoft office there is a free program set called "OpenOffice" that you can download and its the same as m$ office just FREE.

what is the best portable hard drive based on flash memory storage?

How do I use an external hard drive with my Flip Video HD?

T B

I can't seem to find a way to save files off my Flip Video HD to my external hard drive using the software on Mac OS X. I can drag the files manually using Finder to my external - but I cannot add/link the files using the software so I can edit the files.

Any ideas? The problem is I don't have enough space on my computer's HD to make it happen. Currently only have 2 gigs of space when I need 8 gig saved.

Thanks much!
Unfortunately, there's no way for me to clean off my MacBook Pro so that I can keep 20% of my HDD empty.

The main question here is how can I get my videos to show up in the Flip Video software while keeping them on my external drive? Surely they can't expect you to keep literally hours (trans. gigabytes) of video on your main disk.... right?

Answer
I don't use a Mac system but you might try this:

Temporarily move any saved files to the external HD from the computer's internal drive until you have enough free space for the video files. These can be image files, video files, etc. You may even uninstall any programs you don't really use (you can re-install them later if need be). After you have enough space, then add/link the videos from the Flip to the computer then move them to the external drive.

Once that's done, move the other files back to the computer. I had to do this the other day for my friend but it worked. Ideally, you should install another HD in your computer just for video projects. I have 4 drives in my video editing computer.

External Hard Drive Optimization?

Matt O

I have an external hard drive that I use to store all of my music and video files. My iTunes library is essentially the entire drive. Well, my computer, iTunes, VLC, Bittorrent, etc. all have problems accessing this drive. It seems to have gotten quite slow, because there is so much data stored on it. It is a 1TB Western Digital with USB 3.0. Is there a way to optimize this drive so the speeds are better? Or should I purchase a new one with a different connection option if I continue to run files that require quick playback?

Answer
I would start by running a defrag on your external drive to see if that helps. Either use the built in windows defrag option [right click the drive in MyComputer and select "Properties" then tools and choose defragment drive] or use a free tool like Defaggler [I find this works better]:
http://www.piriform.com/defraggler

How full is the drive?

USB 3 is one of the fastest drive interfaces you can [up to 8 X faster than USB 2] so data access should be fast.

You should normally expect a drop in read/write performance if you have less than 10% of free space on a system drive but if this drive is only for storage [as you say it is] then you shouldn't have a problem unless you are trying to write new large video files to it with under 10% free space.

The quality matters a lot to me. Which one is better, do you think?
Forgot this one:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/H4803VC/A/GTech_500GB_GDRIVE_Slim_Portable_USB_Drive?fnode=MTY1NDA0Nw&s=alpha

(So three)
Hm.... Chintan why is the Westen Digital crap? (Just curious)

Answer
That's two Hitachi 2.5" hard drives vs. one WD. 2.5" hard drive.
G-Technology 500GB G-DRIVE mobile Portable Hard Drive -- $$129.95
- Firewire and USB 2.0
- 500GB Hitachi laptop hard drive inside
- 5400RPM

Western Digital 500GB My Passport for Mac Portable Hard Drive -- $119.95
- USB 2.0
- 500GB WD laptop hard drive inside
- probably 5400RPM as well

G-Tech 500GB G-DRIVE Slim Portable USB Drive -- $79.95
- USB 2.0
- 500GB Hitachi laptop hard drive inside
- 5400RPM

For speed, choose the first due to the Firewire connectivity. For reliability, choose the WD. For a cheaper price, choose the 3rd. Don't be enticed by the 'formatted for Mac' and 'Time Machine-ready' crap. They all are. So what does that tell you? It's the WD unless you are particular about the Firewire feature.

However, if it were my money, I would future-proof my investment on a USB 3.0 external hard drive like this:
LaCie Rugged 500 GB USB 3.0 Mini Disk Portable Hard Drive 301555 -- $99.00
http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-Rugged-Portable-Drive-301555/dp/B0058VIWXI/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1339594514&sr=8-8&keywords=2.5%26%2334%3B+external+hard+drive

If attached to a USB 3.0 port, you can use the LaCie Mac USB 3.0 Driver to improve data transfer speed on your Mac (up to 30% performance increase compared to FireWire 800).

If you don't foresee yourself having a computer that has USB 3.0 in the near future and want to stick with Firewire then you can just get this:
LaCie Rugged All-Terrain 500 GB FireWire 800/ FireWire 400/USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 301371 -- $114.95
http://www.amazon.com/LaCie-All-Terrain-FireWire-Portable-301371/dp/B0018B5CA8/ref=pd_cp_e_0

Or go back to the more expensive G-Tech 500GB that has Firewire:

Answer
Reliability would mean a raid 0 external.
(mirror image)

Basically raid 0 means if one drive dies, the other will still be there.

The maxtor externals (1tb) can be configured for raid 0 (750gb) and use the fast firewire 400 interface or usb 2.0.

Computer is not detecting external hard-drive?

Matt B

Hello,

I've had an external hard-drive (SimpleTech 300 GB) for about six months now, and up until now, have not had any problems with it. However, whenever I plug in the hard-drive, I hear the noise on the computer saying that it has detected it, but whenever I go to My Computer, the computer cannot recognize the D: Drive. I disabled the drive a couple days ago, but I went back and clicked, in the Start Menu, RUN: regedit>HKey local machine>system>Current control set>Services>usbstor, then clicked on Start on the right hand side, and changed the value data to 3, but it still doesn't seem to work.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

external hard drive error?

Raymond

im using an acer aspire 5552 laptop. my external hard drive was working fine till a few hours ago. its a western digital, my passport. it doesn't recognize it in "my computer", and constantly keeps popping up with a window telling me to format the drive. i try and that wont even work. the value of the external hard drive is "disk drive", don't think its so posed to be like that. its like the computer recognizes the drive but wont let me access it. could it possibly be something wrong with my computer? any ideas on how i could fix it?

Answer
try to isolate the problem.
try the drive on a different computer if it works it points to a problem on your laptop. if it doesn't then its either the drive or the cable.
Try switching to a different USB port . if it works then its the port.
Try a different cable if you have one that you know works. if it works then it was the cable.
Also check that the PSU for the external drive (if it has one) is plugged in/turned on.

External backup storage - should I go with DVD burner or hard drive?

Tim D

We already use Carbonite, but my wife would like to also use another option to have backups of our photos "in our house", just in case. I'm debating between a DVD burner versus a 250 GB hard drive. Both would be USB 2.0, and cost about the same. I feel like the DVD's would be more reliable, but the hard drive would be more convenient. I plan to store the backups in our FireSafe, so even with a hard drive, it wouldn't be connected all the time.
Which way should I go? Are there other good options I'm not considering? We currently have 20 GB of photos, but I'm sure that will double within 2-3 years.

Answer
I too, would go with a hard drive. Faster backups and restores.

Optical media can degrade over time, accelerated by environmental exposure (sunlight, temperature etc). They might be good 10 years from now or maybe not. A hard drive will usually last unless it's physically dropped. The moving parts won't wear out unless you're using it extensively rather than for archiving. But the biggest reason is the worst-case scenario... data can often be retrieved from a failed hard drive (although sometimes at great hassle or expense, but there's a whole industry out there which deals with these problems on the corporate level). When a DVD or CD is bad, it's a coaster.

If you go the DVD route, check your old backups every few years and ideally, transfer them to a current form of storage. How would you like to be the guy today who backed everything up onto ZIP drives 15 years ago?

Why does my sony laptop keep freezing?

DiyGuy

I have a sony vaio laptop vgn-ns325j and it keeps freezing. I have re- installed win 7 and it didn't help. I also have tried ubuntu linux and it still freezes. At first I thought it was the hard drive but the computer freezes on live cds too. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Letâs take a closer look at the reasons I think are most common for causing a laptop to keep freezing.

* Overheating: If you have a laptop that is a few years old and has been through the grind, there is a good chance that it may be experience overheating problems. You need to understand that because they need to be portable, their hardware components will tend to fail quicker than a desktop computer. If your laptop is freezing after 20 to 30 minutes after turning it on, it could very well be related to overheating. Take a moment to locate the vent where the fan blow air out of your laptop and put your hand in front of it to see if there is any kind of air at all coming out. You may also find that there is a good amount of dust build up on this vent. Donât be afraid to take some canned air and blow all of the dust out. AWESOME TROUBLESHOOTING TIP: One sure-fire way to pin point overheating as the reason your laptop keeps freezing, is to boot your computer and enter the system setup. This can be done usually by hitting F2 or delete. (This varies depending on the brand of laptop you have) Once you have entered the System Setup, just let your laptop sit there and run. If it eventually freezes up, then I will bet you have overheating issues.
* Drivers: Over the years, I have found that laptops are more picky about having drivers that are specifically made for the exact make and model you have. All of the major brands such as HP, Dell, Acer and Sony all have drivers made or designed specifically for their laptops. Not having these specific drivers installed could be a reason why your laptop keeps freezing. The driver I would be most concerned about is your video card driver. So if you have a Dell laptop, then visit their website and download the latest video driver they have for your specific model. It may sometimes be a few years old, but I recommend that you continue to use it because if there was a change that needed to be made to the driver, then they would have updated it. There is a really nice piece of software out there that I would recommend called Driver Scanner. It will work behind the scenes to make sure your computers hardware drivers are up to date. If this is something you donât want to have to worry about, then download it and try it out.
* Windows Registry:There is no difference at all when it comes down to a desktop computerâs registry or a laptopâs registry. No matter which one you have, it doesnât take long for the registry to start to get âclutteredâ. So how does this happen you might ask? Well, every time you install a new application or download a cool new game, there are entries made into your laptops registry. Letâs say you download a cool game and install it. After 3 weeks of playing it, you get bored with it and decide to uninstall it. Well, even after you uninstall it more than likely there will still be several registry entries left in your computer. Over time, these tend to build up and can cause things like laptop freezes, weird errors or just slow your laptop down in general. This is where a good registry cleaner comes into play. There arenât many out there that I truly recommend, but one that I do recommend is called Regcure. It is most certainly one of the most effective registry cleaners on the market, and they have the reputation to back it up as well. Download Regcure â Free Scan Here.
* Operating System: If you have done your troubleshooting and have found that your laptop is not overheating and the drives are up to date with the manufactures recommended drivers, then you need to consider that you may have corrupted operating system files. This could be the reason your laptop keeps freezing. One thing that I can never stress too much is when you purchase a laptop, keep everything that comes with it. By that I mean, keep all of the disks. Too many times, when a person is having problems with their laptop and they need to perform a system repair or reinstall the OS, they never have the CDâs that came with the laptop. Donât let that person be you! If you laptop is blue-screening on you, or if it is locking up hard but not rebooting, then you most likely have an OS issue. I would recommend doing a Windows Repair on your system. Take note, you do not want to do a whole system restore because if you do this, you will lose all of your data. (That last sentence will be the topic of another whole post).

So to recap, if your laptop keeps freezing, then I would first look at overheating as being the source especially if your laptop is more than 2 years old. Next, take a look at the drivers. Make sure you have the manufacturers recommended drivers installed. If these two things check out, then you may be having some problems with the Operating System files. I would recommend doing a Windows Repair. This takes about 30 minutes to do and you will not lose any of your data or programs.

Can i get a virus just by plugging my portable hard drive in or do i have to move the infected file over?

1

i have just bought a new portable hard drive and want to transfer all of my files and music over. i have checked the files and music i want to transfer and it says no threat found.

Can i get a virus just by plugging it into my laptop or do i have to move the infected file over? i know i have some viruses still on the laptop but i got rid of most.

thanks

Answer
It's technically possible for an actively-running virus to be programmed to copy itself over to a drive without you noticing. However, most viruses right now are not programmed to spread through removable media - they're programmed to spread through email and such.

If the virus doesn't actively try to copy itself then the only way your drive could get infected is if you manually copied an infected file over.

Portable hard drive issues?

Kyouya's G

Re post because the other one is getting no help

I'm not a computer genius so if anyone has anything to help please tell me how to get there and what to do in step by step or else I might get lost.

My portable hard drive won't work. It usually auto runs when I plug it in then I view it as a folder, or sometimes, I go to My computer and it's there as another local disk.

Neither of these things are happening and I don't know why. It shows up the on my taskbar just as being able to be safely removed and I checked it's properties in the device manager and it says it's running fine.

I even tried to uninstall the driver but that didn't work.

Any ideas? I'm positive there's no viruses on it and windows says it's working fine I just can't figure out why I can't access it.
Can I use Partition Magic to help?
***********I FIXED MY OWN PROBLEM***********

I'm going to put what I did for future help for others. READ STEPS BEFORE TAKING THEM, DOWNLOADS ARE NECESSARY FOR MY FIX.

1. Go to Start < Run < type "compmgmt.msc" NO ""
2. In the Computer Management window select Disk Management under Storage in the left panel.
3. Find your device. I didn't notice it at first because mine was labeled "Disk 1" Tip: Unplug your portable then plug it in because the window will update immediately, that's how to find the right one.
4. See if the disk is assigned a drive letter. If you're having my problem it won't have one. If you do you can try skipping some of the next steps, but I'm not sure it'll work for any other problem.
5. Right click the disk. Tip: Don't click the box where it says Disk #, click the wider box to the right with the info in it.

*continuing in another edit*
6. Create a partition and follow the steps. Now you're device will be recognized and show up in the My Computer folder again under whatever drive letter you assigned.

7. Now if you try to click the drive in My Computer it's going to ask you to format. Formating erases everything and I was not able to find a way to get the files without erasing BUT, I found a way to get them after erasing. So if you read through everything then format the drive.

8. Here's why I said to read through, to get through this step you need to download a program. Either legally or illegally, whatever you want to do. If you download and need a key, email me, just put it in the subject or I might delete. The program you need is. Recover My Files. I stand by this and it supposedly works for recovering files from other places even ones never saved. It recovered everything even stuff I had long since deleted on my portable hard drive.

*continuing*
9. After you download the program it won't ask you for a key until you need to save your files. Scan for what you're looking for, but don't do a quick scan. You'll have to select all the file types you want to find. This is good if you are only looking for one specific or a few specific things. I needed to restore mostly my movies/anime. This will take AWHILE depending on what you want and how many files were once where you're looking. Make sure you have stable power because I got all the way to the end of a 3 hour search and my comp turned off.
10. After the search you'll have to go through the list to find what you want, I suggest searching by name, file size or type.

After that just save the files (I put them on the desktop so they wouldn't mix up with my other files) and you're done! Worked like a charm. Hopefully it works for everyone else.

Answer
Well, one of two things have happened.

A. The Hard Drive is failing and the partition table information was on the portion of the disc that is damaged.

2. The controller has failed and is not allowing the drive to communicate with the computer.

What you need to do is go to your start menu and click "run" and type "diskmgmt.msc" into the dialog box. If you have vista, just type that into the field on the start menu.

This will bring up a window that lists the drives installed on your computer. Find the one that is associated with the drive you are having issues with and check to see if it recognizes a partition or not. If not, then the partition is bad and you would need to recreate it and reformat it.

The problem with that is that doing so will erase all the data on the drive. So if there is important stuff on it, you should go to a repair shop and see if they can recover the data.

If you don't mind losing the data that was on the drive, then simply right click on the drive in question and select "format" then just set it to "NTFS" and hit Ok.

i have a portable hard drive i need to reformat it. i cant see it in my computer. how do i reformat it?

Answer
Try this:
Right click on My Computer --> Manage
On the left, expand "Storage"
Click "Disk management"
Find the drive in the list on the right toward the bottom (it should say "removable disk").
Right click on the drive --> Format.
Choose the file system (probably best to use FAT32 for a portable device unless you will ONLY use it with your computer, in which case, choose NTFS).

I hope this helps.

Using iPod as portable hard drive?

CJ

So i bought a new iPod recently. I like the songs on my friends iTunes and I have no music on my iTunes. I hear that you can make your iPod as a portable hard drive to transfer music onto your iPod and to another computer, is this true? Has anyone ever done this? Did it work?
What if one computer is mac and one is pc. All the songs were bought off iTunes or from CD's.. so would it still work?

Answer
Manually manage your music and you can use any computer and any itunes you want with your ipod.

Either click the box on the main summary page of your ipod in itunes that says manually manage music or plug it into your friends computer and when it asks (warns) you about syncing, dont sync.

This will put the ipod in manual mode and then you just drag and drop songs from ANY itunes library to your ipods name. Right click and delete what you dont want from the main music list under the ipods name

Dont resync though or anything you dont have in your itunes library you are syncing to will be deleted from the ipod.

Just keep it manually managed if you plan to use it on multiple computers.

I have always kept my ipod manual and use it on several computers.

Can a USB external hard-drive be Restored. I think it's corupt and I lost all pictures!!!?

Kellyann

I can't get two different computers to open the drive. Can I take it to Computer Geeks at Best Buy? Can files possibility be restored the way they do with a computer? The thought that most of my pictures of my children will be gone has me sick to my stomach!
I'm not very good with computers and do know a small repair shop as some one suggested. Should I trust Best Buy/ Staples computer guys? Or can someone suggest the type of small repair shop to take the usb external hard-drive?

Answer
Whats the drive doing or not doing are you getting any life out of it, do not worry chances are you will get your pics back. Often with externals it is the interface that fails, it is relatively easy to remove the drive you can then plug it directly into pc or a usb adapter. If the drive is corrupted but still showing if you quick format it and then use a data recovery program i use Easeus myself but its not free plenty of free ones out there

I would no way take to a big store they have a tendency to lose things, try it yourself first or use a small repair shop

That 128GB and 64GB refers to the size of the hard drive, nothing more than that. They are equally good therefore, but one simply has more storage space. As for the choice between a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air is more portable, it is lighter and has a smaller screen. The MacBook Pro is the powerhouse of the two, intended for people who demand more from a notebook. The MacBook Air is for those who want a highly portable notebook. If you need more processing power, a better graphics card, a built in disc drive, then go for the MacBook Pro. If you want a portable notebook which is fast too, but which is more intended to be portable, then go for the MacBook Air. You can always purchase a separate Apple SuperDrive, which is a portable disc drive by Apple.

500mb external hard drive question?

Sue Kirk

my son wants a external hard drive for his birthday. I dont want to spend a fortune for one, I was looking at a 500 mb one. I know nothing about these. He wants to download some videos on it. I want to know since it only holds about 38 hours worth of videos, can he erase the ones he dont want an free up more space to record more.any help would be appreciated. thanks

Answer
Perhaps you meant GB?

Yes, well, a 500GB hard drive can store more or less videos depending on the filesize and quality of the video itself, so measuring a hard disk by saying how many hours worth of video it can hold is not really practical.

Yes, he can delete data on the drive that he doesn't want to keep in order to free up space.

There are 2 types of external drives -- pocket drives and desktop drives.

Pocket drives are more expensive per gigabyte, but they are very small and portable. Example:
http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Passport-Essential-Portable/dp/B0041OSQ9S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327352717&sr=8-1

Desktop drives are bulkier and requires it to be plugged into a power source to work, but they are cheaper per gigabyte than pocket drives.
Example:
http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Elements-External-WDBAAU0010HBK-NESN/dp/B002QEBMB4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1327352717&sr=8-2

Obviously, if he wants a lot of storage space, but you want to keep the price down, you should get the desktop drive.

Portable Hard Drive Question?

Kaila

I am looking into a portable hard drive as a backup for my computer. Are all of my files transferred to the portable hard drive or are they on both or how does it work? Any info would be great. Thanks.

Answer
It depends what you want to do. Assuming your portable hard drive is big enough, you can move all your files onto it and delete them from your computer to free up space, or keep them on both and use the drive as a backup.

All you do is plug in the drive and it will act in the same way as your hard drive. So you'd plug in the usb cord and then copy/paste the files that you want to move. Assuming that you have windows the hard drive will show up in the My Computer window just like your computers regular drive.

Hope this helps.

Thank you
Sorry..... NTFS
The Hard drive will be connected to the computer for long periods of time. It will be used to store music and program files, so it will be accessed alot.

my new usb portable hard drive asking me to format after virus attack. is there any way to get the data back?

Wahiduzzam

i just bought a transcend store jet 320 GB portable hard drive. i store lots of movies and important files in it and i don't have any backup of it. after connecting one of my friends computer ( which was full of virus & have no anti virus too) it begins to ask me to reformat. without formatting the hard drive, it is not opening. what should i do to get all the data back. please help me

Answer
Don't panic just yet. You said you connected it to a friends computer. It may have been left in what is known as an open state and no computer will actually recognize it. To find out if this is what happened, have your computer running, plug it in and shut it down while still plugged in. The disconnect it and boot back up, wait a minute and then plug it back in. If the computer now see the external device, then it got left in an open state.

For the second part, down load and burn a Linux LiveCD, boot the computer up with this disk and then plug in the external hard drive. In most situations Linux can recognize the hard drive and if it does you can recover your files. If there really is something wrong with the external hard drive, then probably nothing will help.

Are portable hard drives as fast as internal hard drives?

hard_mike9

im buying a laptop and it would be great if i could just install all my games on a portable hard drive so when i come home i can just plug it up to my baby and play away. if there not i guess ill wait till payday to shell out for a bigger internal hard drive.

Answer
It depends on model you have, some external hdds are faster than hdds in the laptop.

External HDD's - 5400 - 7200rpm
Laptop HDD's - 4200 - 5400 - 7200rpm
Tower Pc HDD'd - 7200 - 10 000 - 15 000rpm

But I don't think you'll be able to install any program, game etc in to your external HDD.
External drives are meant to store data.

Which company makes the best portable hard drives?

$$ !

Someone told me that portable hard drives have a short-life. Is it true/ If yes, what's the durability?

Answer
I'd go with Western Digital. But there are some highly rated drives at http://www.newegg.com Some of these are assembled with a different name on them, and who knows what drive is inside. If I had the choice, I'd go with Hitachi, the former IBM Datastar. I'd never buy a Maxtor drive. (again)

Try this one at NewEgg
Western Digital My Book Essential WDG1U1600N 160GB 7200 RPM USB 2.0 External Hard Drive - $79.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136021

or this one
Western Digital Passport Portable WDXMS2500TN 250GB 5400 RPM USB 2.0 External Hard Drive - $144.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136139

But here is the thing, one bump and you are dead. Consider carrying that drive in a special foam filled bag. Always put that drive on the floor of your car, so it does not get destroyed when it slips off the seat of your car and HITS the floor.

Maybe you should be getting several 4GB Flash (Thumb) drives. BUY one at first, and make sure that it works in every computer that you want it to work with. Then buy more of the same brand.

How about this from NewEgg:
CORSAIR 16GB Flash Survivor Ultra Rugged USB 2.0 Drive Model CMFUSBSRVR-16GB â $154.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233059

People LOVE this one.
CORSAIR Flash Voyager 2GB Flash Drive (USB2.0 Portable) 256bit AES Encryption Model CMFUSB2.0-2GB - $19.99

Using the same external hard drive with PC and MAC.?

Jay

I just joined the apple club by getting a macbook. Before this I had been a PC user. I have an external hard drive for my PC that has a valuable set of files and folder saved in it.

Basically I would like to use the same external hard drive as a backup drive for my new Mac without losing the files and folders that I have saved in the external from my PC. Is this possible?

When I hooked up my external to the macbook it was detected but a message popped up telling me that the external needs to be formatted and if I proceed to do that I will lose all data currently on the external. I don't want to do that. Is there any way other than transferring all the files to another hard drive and then assigning this one to the mac? I don't have another hard drive with big enough space and really don't want to buy one because the one I have is appr. 400 gigs. Please help I'm new to mac.

Thanks,

Jay
thanks guys. I do intend to make use of Time Machines which needs the empty drive. But anyway I think like one of you have said I'll have to put all the stuff back on the pc and empty out the drive. But then once its formatted to Mac will the PC be able to read/write to it?

Answer
I use a standard NTFS external drive on both my mac and pc so it can be done easily. However, in your situation, your are limited because you don't wish to purchase another drive so.... Connect the drive back to the pc and offload the files there if you can. Use a buddies pc as well until you get all the files off. Put the drive back on your pc and then format it using Fat32 or NTFS. Copy the data back on to the drive and your mac will be able to read and write to it.

Help using an external hard drive with Mac AND PC?

Daniel

I've just brought an external hard drive (2.5" 120GB)
I need to use it on a PC (for home) and a Mac (for College)
I've plugged it into the mac and all my files are Read Only (and the drive)
Can anyone help? I am VERY new to macs and have only been using it for about a week or so
Also, I have no admin privileges on the mac
Also, it would be used regularly with a PS3

Answer
If the files are read-only, chances are the external drive is formatted with NTFS (which Macs can only read, not write). The PS3 can't recognize NTFS-formatted drives at all.

There is 3rd party-software which allows PCs to use Mac HSF+ formatted drives (MacDrive), and Macs to use NTFS-formatted drives (MacFUSE). But neither of those programs would help your PS3.

Reformatting the external drive as FAT32 (after copying your files off) would make it fully usable by your Mac, PC and PS3. However, FAT32 has some limitations: it's not as secure, there's a size limit of 4gb for any single file, it's more prone to corruption, access is slower when dealing with large files. But it's the most compatible format... and really your only choice if dealing with a PS3.

http://forums.cnet.com/7723-7591_102-336384.html
http://macfuse.en.softonic.com/mac

You'd either have format the external drive using your Mac, or use a 3rd-party utility like this one to format it using your PC. Windows itself won't format a FAT32 volume larger than 32gb.

DVD-RW backup corrupted?

omegax255

I recently backed up all my data on 6 or so empty DVD-RW discs, and later had to have my computer formatted.

When I started retrieving what I would need from my backups, I found that everything seemed corrupt / unreadable / missing!!

Word documents open up blank, with all the pages there, but no text, pictures or anything. Same for Notepad, Spreadsheets and Presentations.

Pictures - "Photo Gallery can't open this picture or video. The file format is not supported, or you don't have the latest updates to photo gallery." The format is simply jpg.

I play video files with VLC Media Player, and it can't seem to read them.

Most of my Zipped files (with WinRAR) show the "No archives found message".

I also had some saved webpages, which open into a blank page.

music files seem to be the only thing left intact.

I'd done the backup with Nero --> Data DVD, but unfortunately didn't bother to check if everything was fine afterwards. Same results come up when I open the files from the discs themselves. And the thing is, the file size is still there, they occupy the same space as before.

I just don't understand what's going on. I've done this before, and always managed to retrieve the data perfectly fine. Is there and solution or way to get back the data intact? And what, after all, is the problem?!?!?

Thanks.

Answer
From what I've read, DVD-RWs are not completely reliable for important backups.

If the DVDs had been used before, I've known them to just 'wear out'. No warning, just read / write errors.

As for recovery, you might have to take them to a repair shop & see if they can recover the files.

It won't help now, but in the future, consider getting a small external hard drive or two. Then use a program like Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image to create a backup on one drive, and a copy on the other.
You could also create a backup partition on your hard drive. Save one copy there, another on a portable drive.

Question about laptop's motherboard?

rachael

I was told that the only way to fix my laptop is to replace the motherboard or something like that. I don't know anything about computers and I was wondering if my information (videos and pictures especially) would still be on it or if it would be erased.

Answer
The hard disk (where your data is) is normally under a cover on the bottom, or side. This is totally independent of the motherboard. The people replacing your motherboard should be able to keep all your data for you. Even if they needed to reinstall windows they should be able to back it all up first.

If the shop doesn't want to help with that, maybe you can get a computer savvy friend to help.

You can take the hard drive out of the laptop by removing a few screws. This can then be put into a 2.5" USB drive caddy, so you can connect it up to another machine (like an external portable drive) so you can get your data off before the repair is done.

Getting a drive caddy is even better if you decide to not have the repair done, but instead get a new laptop. With a drive caddy, all your old data is kept, and you have a place to do backups on in the future.

You will need a 2.5" USB drive caddy, but will need to see if your drive is IDE, or SATA which will determine which you buy.

I highly recommend getting a friend to have a look at it.... if you have no geeky friends... now is the time to make some!

Toshiba portable hard drives?

Super Eury

I purchased a Toshiba portable hard drive ( 500 Gb ). It stated that it was apple compatible, but every time I try to open it on my mac, it launches Windows in my VMware. When I install the software on Windows, it practically crashed my computer. It took me an hour to delete that horrible software.

Is there any way to re-format the drive so that I can use it as portable hard drive on Apple and not be force to use the trashy software?
Tallest Skill : Thanks, that worked perfectly.

Answer
Sure. Open Disk Utility and do a clean wipe of the whole drive. Not just the partition, the whole thing. Reformat it HFS+.

Don't you hate that crapware? It's so horrible.

What is a portable hard drive?

Q. Okay, I may sound ignorant, but what exactly is a portable hard drive? Can they act like a normal hard drive? Do you run an OS on them? Can you install programs on them? How much are they? What's the difference between that and a flash drive?

Answer
A portable hd usually refers to a USB connected harddrive that is use to store data. However, newer systems can boot from USB drives (or CDs depending on your OS) and you can use it to intstall your OS. (Not typical however.)

Your OS usually will treat them like a regular harddrive and you can install programs on them, however you wouldn't normally do this since installing programs will usually add entries to the drive where the operating system is to tell the program how to run.

A flash drive refers to "flash memory" these are chip based drives that have no moving parts. Good to carry files around with you. (refered to as key drives sometimes as you can carry one on your keyring) A portable hard drive is more of an external hard drive and has the same technology as one in your PC. (moving parts - a little more likely to damage.)

A flash drive is usally 256 megabytes to 2 gigabytes. USB hard drives can be 10 gigabytes or larger, up to a terabyte. (1000 gigabytes.)

In both cases, you usually want to have all your OS files and programs local to the machine and keep or backup your data on the portable type drives.

can i run applications directly from a portable hard drive?

mm09

for example can i play movies directly from the hard drive or do i have to copy the movie files onto the computer first and play it from there.

Answer
You can do almost anything on a portable hard drive. You have to install the program to your portable hard drive, or use portable applications (found at http://portableapps.com/) to ensure that, should the installer save paths in registry keys or configuration files, they point to the right place, and not to a non-existant location on your hard drive where the files used to be.

However, you must make sure that when you want to use a program/file, your hard drive must be connected to your computer for the duration of the use, and that, unless your portable hard drive is plugged in 24/7, it will not be an on-demand, ready to go experience.

Also, USB read/write speeds will be a bottleneck, so I wouldn't recommend running any games off of a hard drive. Playing movies is usually okay because most modern video players buffer the video quite a bit, and therefore allow for a smooth show.

Can a Portable Hard Drive act as a Hard Drive?

J

Okay, here's the situation. I have two laptops, but both of them have broken hard drives. So I was wondering if I went out and bought a portable hard drive from Wal-Mart if there was some way that portable hard drive would kick in and act as the main hard drive if there isn't one already in there or if these so called portable hard drives were nothing more then larger flash drives?

Answer
Yes, it will. You will have to go into system BIOS first, and select the boot order to boot from USB. From there, you will need to Install the OS on that hard drive, and all of the drivers from that particular laptop. You can find the drivers online such as if it's an HP you can visit the HP website, and click on the drivers section. Hope this helps!

2012 MacBook air or Pro for a High School student?

Q. I'm going to be a freshmen in September and I'm not sure which laptop would be best for me. I would get an 11 inch air with 64GB flash and 8GB of RAM for $1040 or standard pro for $60 more. Would it be worth it to spend that much more for a pro? I would only really use the laptop at home for typing up essays and PowerPoint, emails, YouTube, and maybe some minecraft and FaceTime. To get the standard pro would be 1100 because of my student discount. I have about 10Gbs of videos and music so will 64GB be enough?

Answer
I suggest Macbook Pro

Round 1: CPU

The 13" MacBook Pro comes out strong in the processor department. The base model is equipped with a 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, with Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz, and sporting 3MB of L3 cache. The 13" MacBook Air, on the other hand, must rely on the ULV variants. The base model offers a 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, with Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz, also with a 3MB L3 cache.

There's no way around itâthe MacBook Pro easily wins in this category, with a processor than can do more in any given second compared to its competitor.

Advantage: MacBook Pro

Round 2: GPU

Both machines feature Intel Core i5 processors with integrated Intel HD4000 GPUs. The core clock speed in the MacBook Pro is slightly higher, so in extreme cases it will likely outperform the Air slightly. But for all intents and purposes, it's the same GPU powering both machines, so this round is a draw.

Advantage: Draw

Round 3: RAM

Both base models come with 4GB of RAM, which we consider a minimum for anything more than light use. For this round, we're calling it a draw, but don't be surprised when RAM capacity comes into play in a later round.

Advantage: Draw

Round 4: Storage

The MacBook Air comes with a speedy SSD with what Apple claims is "4 times the performance" of a 5400RPM mechanical hard drive. The base model comes with a relatively paltry 128GB of storage space, however, which can quickly get eaten up with any serious photo, audio, or video work. You'll have to either pony up significant cash to Apple for extra internal storage, or rely on external storage.

A third-party upgrade may be forthcoming once the altered form-factor is reverse engineered, but don't bet on it being cheap, and the wait may be longer than you can handle.

The MacBook Pro, on the other hand, comes with ample 500GB of storage, though it is the relatively pokey spinning platter type. You can pay more for an optional SSD from Apple, but there are numerous options for either SSDs or larger HDDs from third parties.

Advantage: MacBook Pro

Round 5: Display

This round is tougher. The Air is equipped with a much higher resolution 1440Ã900 pixel display, giving users more screen real estate. The LED backlighting is bright, and the screen is sharp.

The Pro comes with a noticeably lower resolution screen, with just 1280Ã800 pixels. But in its favor, the screen does have a significantly wider color gamut and dynamic range. For general applications, this won't matter much, but for color-critical work (like photography, graphics, and video) it will be highly advantageous.

Given that some users will weigh the importance of color accuracy over screen real estate differently, we're going to call this round a draw. But the difference is something to keep in mind when making your own choice.

Advantage: Draw

Round 6: Ports

The latest Air model comes equipped with the still nascent high-speed Thunderbolt port. It includes two USB 3.0 ports, an audio port, and the redesigned MagSafe 2 power connector. The 13" MacBook Air also has an SD card slot.

Round 7: SuperDrive

This round was a fast one. The Pro still includes a built-in SuperDrive capable of burning dual-layer DVD-Rs at 8x speed, as well as CD-Rs. If you handle lots of optical media, the Pro is definitely the right choice.

You can buy the external USB SuperDrive for the MacBook Air, but it will cost you an extra $79, and, again, it's something extra to carry around. For occasional use, we think this is an acceptable alternative. The advantage here still goes to the Pro.

Advantage: MacBook Pro

Round 8: Weight

Both machines are from different weight classes, as we noted earlier. When it comes to toting around a portable device, less weight is always an advantage.

The 13" MacBook Air weighs just a hair under 3 pounds (2.96, Apple says), while the 13" MacBook Pro weights 4.5 pounds. Where every ounce counts, the Air takes this round easily.

Advantage: MacBook Air

Round 9: Battery life

The MacBook Air has a 50Whr lithium-polymer (li-po) battery, while the MacBook Pro has 63.5Whr li-po battery. That might seem to give the Pro the advantage, but the Air relies on an ultra-low-voltage processor, which uses less power. In the end, Apple rates both machines for seven hours of "wireless Web" use, which includes the screen at half brightness, WiFi on, and browsing the Internet. For average use, you should get a full day's work out of both machines on a full charge.

Advantage: Draw

Do UK customs search external hard drive?

Jorja G

I will be leaving in October from the US for a one year Master's degree program in the UK (flying into Leeds/Bradford). I will be bringing my macbook and an external hard drive with me carry on. I have been reading that some people get their laptops and external hard drives searched by UK customs. Is that true?

Answer
Anything you carry across borders can be checked/searched by customs if they have a reason to suspect you are carrying illegal content.

Child Porn and other prohibited material can easily be smuggled across boarders so they can conduct a search if they want. It is highly unlikely they would though .

External hard drive pics?

Tom

I'm overwhelmed with all the external hard drives there are out there. I did a lot of research too. I found a few external hard drives that looked pretty good, and I want to know which one is the best in your opinion.
1. Western Digital WDXMS1200TN Passport 120 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive

2. Seagate ST302504FDA1E1-RK FreeAgent Desktop 250 GB USB External Hard Drive

3. LaCie Rugged All-Terrain Hard Disk
Hi-Speed USB 2.0
80GB

Don't worry about the storage capacities, I just want to know which one is the best in reliability, quality, customer support, features, etc...

Thank you for your time and effort to answer this question.
(I will give the best answer 10 points)

Answer
Western digital and seagate are both excellent. Have had a 320gb western digital drive for the last three years and it still runs perfectly.

There is another kind of hard drive that works as a normal external hard drive should but can also connect to your tv via scart . That means, you can download your programs/movies on the pc and then watch them on your tv in comfort. I plan on getting one in the near future.
Heres a link showing an example. Worth considering i think.

I've got a 100$ gift card, and want to be able to get more space on my computer and a new game. I was originally looking for a portable hard drive, but this one doesn't say if it is portable. And it really doesn't matter, as long as I just plug it in, install some stuff, and I get more space.

Tell me if it's a good buy, and how it will work.

Time Machine with Seagate GoFlex Ultra Portable external hard drive?

katiebee

Will the Seagate GoFlex Ultra Portable external hard drive work with the Time Machine function of a macbook and if so does it have to be the version for a mac or is the regular version just as good? Thanks for your help!

Answer
Short answer: Yes, it will work.

There are two parts to any "external drive":
-- The case.
-- The HDD inside the case.

All HDDs are exactly the same for external use. All that is important is that they have the type of connector that matches the case. New HDDs use SATA connector. In your situation, you already have the HDD inside the case, so this is academic info.

The case also doesn't care what type of computer you have, except that often a "Mac" drive has a case with Firewire connection as well as USB. You will be hard-pressed to find a PC with Firewire connection, because it is more expensive than USB, and PC folks tend to shun expensive hardware. All Macs except the MB Air have Firewire for much faster copying to the external drive.

Some companies know that many people think everything about a Mac is special, so they sell a "special" Mac version of a drive. Nothing is different except that it is pre-formatted for Mac OS use. If you buy a "non-Mac" drive, it is pre-formatted for Windows XP or later (NTFS format). That is easily changed to Mac format using Disk Utility > Erase tab.

Time Machine needs a drive volume ("volume" means a partition that is formatted) with "Mac OS Extended" format. That's the only requirement.... other than enough room on it for the backup files.

How do I fix my portable hard drive?

HELP ME.

I have a WD portable hard drive that I've used with my hp laptop and I recently just connected to a brand new macbook...it started working and detecting on the macbook but as soon as I ejected it and connected it back to my HP, it just didnt detect it anymore. I've looked at its properties and it says its unpartitioned?

It has that plug and play capability so I really dont get it.
It didnt end up working on my mac either.

There's data on it that I really need to save. I cant format it..thats my last option. I've looked at the properties and it says "not initialized" under the status, and partition style - non applicable.

It was working all so perfectly...

Answer
Well, firstly you should try and connect the hard drive back to your Mac to see if it works.

If that doesn't help, then it is likely something wiped your hard drive clean, hence you're getting the un-partitioned error from Windows. You will have to partition the drive all over again.

Follow the instructions in this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348

Be sure to check that your hard drive does NOT work on Mac before you do this.

Hope this helped :)

External Hard Drive Formatting?

Sean

I want to format my 500GB External Hard Drive

I'm using a mac to format & partition it.

I want 2 Partitions:

A: 30GB dedicated to the transfer of files between PC and Mac
B: 470GB storage for my mac

What way should I do this and what file systems should I use?

Answer
First of all, you won't be able to use entire 500GB space on this drive. You will most likely be able to use only 465GB, so plan accordingly.

Now, create the partition for transferring files between PC & MAC
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Plug it in the PC
Right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage"
Click on "Disk management"
If you see any partition already created, right click on it and select "Delete" to delete all partitions.
You will see on the left the actual size you can use out of 500GB.
Right click on the "Unallocated Space" and click on "Create partition". Keep it as "Primary"
Type in the size for this drive. 1GB = 1024MB
Make sure you format this as "NTFS" (FAT32 does not support single files size above 4GB)

After that, take your hard drive to MAC and format the remaining space left on the drive.
Click on Go > Utilities

At last, download and install the software from link bellow. This will allow you to read/ write the partition you created in PC earlier in MAC.

Seagate Free Agent GoFlex 1.5 TB ultra portable hard drive?

bill y

This drive was advertised as being Mac and PC compatible, but the instructions on how to use it are very limited. I want to use it to encrypt and store files from either a Mac or a PC that I can later decrypt and open on either a Mac or a PC. I do not want to use if for automatic file back-up.

Please tell me in detail how I can do this.
Thanks

Answer
truecrypt could work
http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads
idk if its the best but it have support for both windows 7 and os x
i never encrypted a whole drive befor but this is how i used it
i start truecrypt and make a new crypted file (this work as a containter, think of a chest with a lock on it) which you set a password on.
then you use truecrypt to mount the file and type in the password, wrong password and it wont let you on it.
im unsure if you can crypt a whole drive with a simple setting or if you simply have to make a file big enough for the whole drive (well you can make several if you dont want it all crypted)
windows 7 have its own encryption but idk how it works with osx.

Should I buy a warranty on a portable external hard drive?

Claire M

I was going to buy http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/706644-REG/Seagate_STAA320100_320GB_FreeAgent_GoFlex_Ultra_Portable.html
I was wondering if I should spend the extra $11 to get a two year warranty. This would be for a MacBook Pro 13in, where I've used the 40GB.
Thank you!

Answer
Five things to remember:
1) price of product
2) price of warranty
3) time of warranty
4) coverage of warranty
5) Reputation of specific product (NOT brand)

Summary: if the price for a long warranty is cheap compared to the price of the product it might be worth it. It IS worth it if the warranty actually covers stuff that will happen (drops, power surges, protection of data, non-corruption.)

If the above isn't true, look at the experiences with that specific model of hard drive (forget the brand; look at THAT product), and them make your decision. If that product has problems, it's better to get another.than to get the warranty.

But plan that you'll be replacing that hard drive no matter what in 3 -5 years. It might be cheaper just to save the money for the warranty over 3-5 years, and use it to buy a replacement.
