How do I use my WD portable hard drive on Ubuntu Linux?

bhayward00

I have a Western Digital 1TB portable hard drive and when I plug it into my computer (Running Ubuntu Linux 10.10) nothing happens. Is there a way to make the computer recognize it?

Answer
I have never used this OS but if it has a add new hardware folder try there or if it has device manager you may want to check there the drive should be listed under usb devices as a mass storage device. you may need to get drivers for it.

I plug in my portable hard drive it makes the noise on the PC that it has been plugged in (duh-dum) but doesnt come up in My computer. I am running Windows 7 the Portable HD is a WD 3200

Answer
Make sure you have the drivers needed for it to run. Check the manufacture's website.

You should plug it into a second computer to see if it works on an other computer.
