portable hard drive 7200 image

Im looking for a portable external drive to store some documents, pictures, and files. Ive seen a lot of good Western Digital passport drives that feature USB 3.0 but many of them are only 5400rpm. Primarily I do lot of video editing and file transferring. What is the best 7200rpm USB 3.0 portable hard drive that I can find?

Answer
You can buy a customized external enclosure and a barebone 7200 rpm hard drive. That will solve your problem.

What's a reliable good portable/external hard drive that I can get?

ana

I want to get a hard drive for more memory to put all my media (movies, mp3's, TV shows) as either backup file storage or storage.

I want to know which hard drive you would recommend that's reliable and won't cause me any big problems.
Looking for one online was a bit overwhelming, would like some help. Thanks.

Answer
I always trust these guys verdict, when they say it's the best, it good enough for me. So if you are looking for external hard drive then try this one
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/western_digital_my_passport_elite
But if I were you in your situation, I'll go with internal one if I have space left in my computer. This one blow is has 1.5 Tera Bit storage
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=st31500341as-barracuda-7200-11-sata-32mb-c-1.5tb-hd&vgnextoid=511a8cf6a794b110VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD&vgnextchannel=47f281f8c0f43110VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD&reqPage=Model
That should be enough for now. Here is the amazon link for it

I need to upgrade myPS3 pretty soon, and I'd like some suggestions on what sort of hard drive to use. What features should I be looking for. Please be specific in your answer. I'd like to have a reliable on that is going to hold a lot of storage space.

Answer
@Josh... Never answer this kind of question again until you go research instead of just randomly say because you think you know it, because you have no idea.

For internal HDD's you wanna go with either Toshiba or Seagate as the name brand. Toshiba because these are basically the default HDD's found in every PS3 ever made (as Toshiba helped create the PS3 with Sony, so their HDD's will definitely run the best in the PS3). Seagate on the other hand gives you 2 extra years of warranty compared to any other name brand. Other brands give you 3 years, Seagate will give you 5. I have a Seagate in my one PS3, and it runs pretty well the same as the Toshiba did, but for SOME games I noticed slightly slower loading times since it isn't the default brand the PS3 used. Make sure the HDD is a 2.5" Serial ATA 5400RPM 8MB Cache drive. So something like these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toshiba-MQ01ABD050-500GB-2-5-Laptop-Notebook-SATA-Hard-Drive-5400RPM-500-GB-/360586877480?pt=US_Internal_Hard_Disk_Drives&hash=item53f4a71a28

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Seagate-Momentus-Thin-500-GB-Internal-5400-RPM-2-5-ST500LT012-SATA-Hard-Drive-/221209186549?pt=US_Internal_Hard_Disk_Drives&hash=item33811850f5

The 5400RPM is EXTREMELY important. Any higher can make the PS3 overheat. It was designed for 5400RPM. Those links are just examples of what you need to get, but get them brand new out of a box from Best Buy or a similar store.

As for external HDD's, any name brand will do as long as it's speed is 2.0 or higher (3.0 is usually compatible with 2.0, so don't worry there). I got a Seagate for this as well. You'd only need a 500GB in size, just make sure you get it formatted to FAT32 (Best Buy can do this for you) otherwise the PS3 won't be able to detect it. It only recognizes FAT32 format for external mass storage devices like externals and flash drives and such. You usually only get 1 year's worth of warranty with externals new. You already know the internal HDD's warranty(s) new. Something like this for external is fine:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Toshiba-Canvio-500GB-USB-3-0-5400RPM-Black-Portable-Hard-Drive-HDD-/400442924785?pt=US_External_Hard_Disk_Drives&hash=item5d3c421ef1

Hope that helps.

which external hard drive would be better for me?

McDonalds

Hey!

So I'm going to be starting college soon and I will be an art & design major (aiming towards photography and digital stuff). I'm planning on buying a new computer and an external hard drive for school, and while I believe I have the computer picked out (macbook) I'm having trouble deciding on which external hard drive that I want.

I've found these two that seem pretty good:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/WD+-+My+Passport+1TB+External+USB+3.0/2.0+Portable+Hard+Drive+-+Black/4911796.p?id=1218575757942&skuId=4911796

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+Canvio+2TB+External+USB+3.0+Hard+Drive+-+Black/6913943.p?id=1218813790317&skuId=6913943

and I'm not sure which one is better?

on the surface, I'd say the Toshiba one since it's another 1TB for an extra $20, but other than that they look pretty much the same to me...advice? :)

Thanks a ton, I'll pick a best answer!

The cheap one

How can you format an external hard drive when every computer says "windows cannot format the drive?"?

rob j

I have a western digital 1tb external hard drive. After lending it to a friend I had to format it before I could access it on my computer. I tried but it said the above error message. I've tried on three computers since then all with the same message; i'm sure everything is gone by now but i just want to be able to access it. What can I do?

Answer
use a non-windows system to format the drive. your friend probably had a Mac -- that o/s works differently.

go to cnet.com and look for a downloadable free operating system that runs off of a cd/dvd or floppy drive [whatever you have] -- check to make sure it has the ability to format drives in NTSB format [which is what your Windows box wants to find]. you'll also need USB2 support.

make a bootable disk with this o/s on it and then boot your machine from it. then you should be able to access the external drive and reformat it.

carefully -- the non-Windows o/s can probably reformat your regular Windows hard drive as well.

cheers,

What could I use to back up ALL of my files? (and question about .avi videos)?

Christine

I want to put all my files on something. I have a TON of videos in .avi format, and a ton of mp3s. I tried to put it on my flash drive (cuz I know nothing about computers) and it said I needed like 2 GB more space to just put on some of the videos. I need something huge I'm guessing, to fit it all.
I'm worried because my computer overheats a lot so I want to back everything up. A lot of my stuff is obsolete and irreplaceable.

So what would I need that would fit everything, that would also work on any computer? Like plug into a usb port or something...
I thought of maybe a portable harddrive or something but I dont even know what that is so I'd need an explanation, and can all computers read those?

Also, since most of the videos are in .avi format, those videos only have ever played on my computer. In order for me to send them or upload them somewhere, I'd always import them into movie maker and publish it as a .wmv file (which could then be uploaded to youtube or sent to a friend and played in windows media player).
Does this mean that the .avi videos only will work on this computer, or does it mean that if I put them on a harddrive or something else, they would still be valid and work-able, but would just need to be converted later if I wanted to upload them to the internet?

I don't want to import and convert them all to wmv to save them, I could just do that on an as-needed basis later on. As long as I can put them into movie maker (cuz I like to make videos) from another computer, I'm fine with that. But I dont know if the fact that they are .avi means that I can only do that on this one (like maybe it's just a shortcut or something)..

Does anyone know anything about this that could help me out?

Answer
I think you should buy a 250GB hard drive from somewhere like comet, currys, pcworld there only about £35.00

Both Windows and Macs can write and read to portable hard drives

How to rip a standard 50 GB bluray movies onto my laptop hard drive for later use?

Leopold

Hello I have a collection of some bluray disk movies. Now i just want to store onto my computer (win OS) hard disk or the portable hard drive as common to see video formats. I would like the quality to be as close as possible and if it has to be a paid program to do that that is ok. A step by step guide would be much appreciated!

Answer
Why would you want to waste your hard drive space by cluttering it up with movies? And besides most movie disks have anti piracy security programs built into them so you cant copy them

Is there a way to transfer Video from Camera straight to an external Hard Drive without a computer?

best external hard drive nas on ... networking drives storage blank media hard drives hdd ssd nas ebay

Joe K

We were trying to find an external hard drive that would support such a thing. Basically we want to be able to be in the field recording video connect the camera to the hard drive download all the video off it to the drive. Then be able to shoot more video without having a bunch of SD cards. Maybe a device that has it's own hard drive and card reader and an auto transfer. Or are we going to be stuck just having to buy a laptop to accomplish this? Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer
That seems to be a "dream, intelligent" external hard drive at the moment since practically all external HDDs are just dumb drives and highly dependent on a PC/laptop. So for the meantime, just settle for an Ultra mobile PC with large and fast HDD.

What you want could be a reality once consumer demand for such need increases. As of now, partly intelligent external hard drives can interface directly with special routers as network attached storage (NAS) and some could playback HDD video content directly to TV.

What is the best way to make an external hard drive wireless?

Answer

I am looking for pros & cons of the following options:
1. Router with USB port
2. Wireless USB hub
3. Apple Time capsule
4. Other.

I am looking to make my external hard drive wireless. I want to be able to access it from my desktop and laptop.

Answer
Connect it to your desktop, make sure your laptop is in the same work group as your desktop.

Do you not already have a wireless network for your laptop? If you do you can just Right-Click your external drive in "MY Computer" and select "Sharing and Security" Make sure "Share this Folder" is selected. Now you can access the drive over the network without purchasing extra equipment.

Wireless usb hubs cannot support connecting multiple computers to the same device at the same time... They are made for connecting multiple devices to one computer and WILL NOT WORK for connecting multiple computers to one device... USB has no collision detection which is why it is not able to network computers together as well. Only Fire wire and IP based technology has such a capability.

If you do not have a wireless network then I recommend a wireless NAS with USB ports like this one from trendnet: http://www.google.com/product_url?q=http://www.provantage.com/trendnet-ts-i300w~7TDWU00R.htm&fr=ALNQw8ZOsElh9bXPMldqHaCmEfyqpR1bfM6_CTLNgbsqKN2Y95nHhI0ZAdrl5cVMXFS25smnD90lHNCSYYLfjKiAP6_J_N-0ByahMNcTtDva5hATchIM_UctvB5qzYIRRdgA2IZFlHnWh0q59YtykmBEJKjsNI23DAAAAAAAAAAA&gl=us&hl=en&sa=title

Answer
You may need to update the Bios on that motherboard before you can use it with that CPU. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1wVWP

I copied your build as best as I could.

You will most likely need to get a different motherboard for you build. Also, you know that you will never be able to go Crossfire with that motherboard. But I'm not sure, if unless you end up getting a very high end graphics card (like a Titan) and want the very best and wanting to use 3 or so monitors and wanting more than 1 titan card. I don't think it's worth getting more than one card at a time.

I would play around with pcpartpicker.com/â and see what build you can get.

Also remember, unless you have a monitor already, you will also need to put in about $120 or so towards a new monitor. And there are also the little things like a mouse and keyboard and also possibly speakers. Though you could get a cheap keyboard and mouse (like $30 or less total)

How to enable my iPod as a portable hard drive without using iTunes?

jayztttigh

I basically want to do exactly what I said; enable my iPod to be a portable hard drive. I know that this can be done through iTunes.

Now my problem is this. I don't have iTunes, nor do I want that program. Every time I install it, it installs unnecessary stuff including quicktime, and other stuff I could go on forever about, and it is a pain to un-install.

So the question is, is there any easy way to enable my iPod to be a portable hard drive without having to install iTunes to do it ?

Answer
Go to My Computer and open the drive that has "Type" as "Removable disk."
You should be able to drag and drop files into it. Just don't drop anything into the folder called "Ipod_control"

How to use Macbook Pro as monitor for HD Film Camera?

best portable hd camcorder on Budget Camcorders | Best HD Camcorder Review - Part 2
best portable hd camcorder image

MikeJames

How do you connect a Macbook Pro up to use at a monitor for an HD camera? Im looking for the simplest way. I have a Cannon HD camcorder and I want to use the Macbook as the monitor. Thank you..

Answer
The MacBook Pro is a computer - not a monitor - but i guess iMovie or Final Cut - you need to connect the miniDV tape based camcorder's DV port to the MacBook Pro with a firewire cable. Consumer grade hard disc drive and flash memory camcorders don't have a DV port, so you can't get there from here (not an Apple Macintosh issue - same issue with traditional Windows/Vista machines).

So if your Canon high definition camcorder is an HV series, you are good to go. If it is HF, HF S or HG series, not gonna happen.

You are much better off just getting a 15"-19" HDTV to be your monitor... any of the above camcorders can use this with either the AV-out, component video out or HDMI depending on the camcorder and HDTV. If portability is the issue, then a portable DVD player works well. Since you aren't playing a DVD, the battery lasts for a LONG time. I've been using a Sony 8.5" portable DVD player for years - it only connects using the analog AV cables, but it works fine when my camcorder is at the end of a camera crane and I can't see its LCD panel...

Seagate 1TB Expansion Hard Drive & Xbox 360?

samsung portable hard drive g2 image

Lanabee

Hey guys,
I bought a Seagate 1TB Expansion Portable Drive the other day because it has more space than my current Samsung G2 Portable 640GB. The Samsung works perfectly with my Xbox 360, streaming music/movies from it just by plugging it into the USB port in the front on the Xbox. It is FAT32.
Now, the Seagate 1TB is showing up in my control panel>disk management as a FAT32 system as well so I'm a bit confused as to why it isn't working?
I've read heaps of forums, and none of the suggestions people have posted have worked.
I don't need to reformat the Seagate because it is already a FAT32 system and is also the primary system and there don't seem to be any others present.

Looking at both the hard drives I've listed above on my computer, they both look the same, same type of system and all, just that extra storage space is all.

So why won't my Xbox recognize my new Seagate hard drive?

Answer
Seagate firmware which caused the drive to lock up and fail to be detected by the BIOS in Xbox 360. You should not use Seagate for Xbox 360. The good hard drives for Xbox 360 are Western Digital or Samsung .

Answer
I have found that the big names work best, ie. Seagate, Western Digital etc. However, if you are looking for a good deal and a site that generally has reviews by mostly informed consumers, try buy.com. Here is a link to some results that you may find to optimal:

For example this hard drive is 250GB, for 79 dollars and has 38 reviews to read, most of them are great:

I have a Western Digital 1TB portable hard drive and when I plug it into my computer (Running Ubuntu Linux 10.10) nothing happens. Is there a way to make the computer recognize it?

Answer
I have never used this OS but if it has a add new hardware folder try there or if it has device manager you may want to check there the drive should be listed under usb devices as a mass storage device. you may need to get drivers for it.

Can I use a portable hard drive on a laptop without a hard drive built in?

Mark Davie

My hard drive on my HP laptop has stopped working and I was wondering if I can use my 1TB portable hard drive or 4GB usb stick to run a OS? I have pulled out my old HDD because I'm waiting for a new one. Any ideas?

Answer
If you are good technically then you can take out the HDD from a portable device and put it into your laptop.

The portable hard drive you have there should have a 2.5 inch internal hard disk and that should exactly replace the one inside your laptop.

I hope you know how to install the Operating System and program if you can do the above steps in flying colors.

Best of luck!

How do I reformat an external hard drive from a Mac to Windows 7, without a Mac?

best external hard drive format for mac on SureFire FireWire 800 External Hard Drive from Verbatim | Tech World
best external hard drive format for mac image

Ty

I used to have a Mac desktop and laptop, so both of my external hard drives were formatted accordingly. I now have a Toshiba Satellite that runs on Windows 7. I am not able to view either of my external hard drives on my Toshiba - what do I do to change this? Thank you, in advance.

Answer
Does your windows 7 computer identify the devices? It may still identify the devices just not let you view the content of them because they are in a different format. If so take note of the drive letters and go into CMD and type "format drive:x" or something similar. Once it has formatted you should be able to import it as a foreign disk in Disk Management or simply now use it with your windows pc.

Let me know if this helps as im not sure how else it can be done without a mac.

What format should my external hard drive be formatted to work on a Mac and also hold files bigger than 4GB?

Alekz

I can't modify my external hard drive on my Mac because it's formatted on NTFS.

Then, What format should it be formatted if my files are bigger than 4GB? Fat32 doesn't let me save files any bigger than that! Any solution?

Answer
Well, you have encountered the limitations of using a PC formatted drive on a Mac. Is there any reason you're not wanting to format it as a Mac drive?

The normal reason for not doing this is because you want to share the drive with a PC. You haven't mentioned this situation and your question, but it's the only possibility I can think of.

So the bottom line, at least as far as I can see, is that if you want to share the drive with a PC then you aren't going to be able to do files over 4 GB. If you don't want to share it with a PC, then just reformat it as a Mac OS extended volume.

I wanna add more memory to my Xbox 360. Can I install games from discs onto a portable hard drive connected to my Xbox through the USB port.

NOTE: I'm not going to put Xbox Live stuff on the portable hard drive. I only want to use it to install games from discs.

Answer
Not possible. The 360 can only stream media like music and movies from an external drive through a USB connection. It cannot store game saves or content on it.

Where can I buy a toshiba alu2 with online shipping to an international destination?

portable hard drives nz on 160GB and 320GB ThinkPad USB Portable Secure Hard Drives - Overview
portable hard drives nz image

Been looking around for a 1TB 2.5" Toshiba Alu2 hard drive and as I live in New Zealand I have to buy online. My problem is I can seam to find a store that ships internationally... There are alot of UK shops selling them but they only ship within the UK and Ireland. Anyone out there managed to find somewhere that ships internationally?!
Thanks for the links guys but have been looking around for what hdd suits me and I have decided I really want an alu2 and only an alu2. Unfortunately it only seams to be available in central Europe. Amazon doesn't seam to stock them and amazon.co.uk doesn't ship to NZ... :(
I'm aware the Toshiba Canvio is available to me but I'm more interested in the alu2 for the aluminum casing I don't need the USB 3.0 version and it costs more anyway.

Is there anyone out there who knows of an online shop with international shipping for these? Even Ebay only has a couple of the 500GB versions.

can you format a hard drive without erasing the data on it or get the data off it while it has a raw format?

jeremy j

Answer
Formatting Basics
Formatting a hard drive means to erase it, although sometimes the data can be recovered. So companies/governments use programs such as http://dban.sourceforge.net/ that overwrites each part of the hard drive multiple times.

Re-install Operating System (OS)
I would recommend buying/using another hard drive that has enough space to store your files. Then format your computer, reinstall the OS and then put all the information back from the portable drive.

Hard Drive Failure
Just get a new hard drive and then set the hard drive that failed to slave and then add a new hard drive as master (install OS on it) and then move the information from one drive to the other.

Post Formatting Hard Drive Recovery
*NOT GUARANTEED*
If you have formatted your information and need to recover data, however, you can use software such as:
TuneUp Software Utilities 2007 http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/
or hire services such as:

To the person above, the CIA can most of the time recover information from one format. See this article:

Extremely technical research papers:

It has to do with magnetic properties of the hard drive.
